I think this is a good idea...they are really reaching out to the dedicated users like myself and to me that shows commitment to make their community a better place. I'm all for it
davidtcFeb 4, 2011
If they wanted to reach out to their dedicated users, they would have put this on digg and not hide it on facebook.

NB4 "bring back V3"
hackiewackieFeb 4, 2011Submitter
They won't bring back V3 but here's an interesting comment made by the staff
" Stick around, we've got some big news in the coming few weeks."
paranor01Feb 4, 2011
I hope it's to tell us they have better axle's that they won't fear in breaking.
FPSmotoFeb 4, 2011
lol
adcuzFeb 5, 2011
Indeed, they must get through quite a few axles.
thtswutshesaidFeb 4, 2011
Pretty clever...not gonna lie.
calgaryjayFeb 4, 2011
Lol Digg opened itself up to a world of hurt. Idiots ruined there own site. Now I am stuck on a beta view and doesn't seem anyway to get out of beta view. Screw you Digg. Best idea they had in a long time was + and - comments and look how quick they pulled that.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Settings -> Viewing Digg -> Enabled Design
cstaylorFeb 4, 2011
This is why we can't have nice things.
cdurukFeb 4, 2011
Hi there! As others pointed out, we do have the option to switch back to the old view but I'd be curious to hear what problems you have with the beta view as we want to switch to that for good at some point.
Also, individual buries and diggs and comments have always been available when you click the comment score however we heard that people didn't know they existed. So we switched them over but then the feedback this time was that people wanted the old way back. So we made another change; now if you click the comment score, the individual buries/diggs on comments appear for all comments.
We are always listening. Feel free to contact us anytime by reaching us on Twitter, or using the contact form at http://about.digg.com/contact. It's hard for us to read all the feedback left on story items --there are just too many-- but if a story is about Digg or if the story is submitted by Digg staff, there's a good chance someone will see it.
Anyway, thanks for your feedback.
davidtcFeb 5, 2011
Majors features are nice, but don't forget about the small details in stuff.
dirtyfriesFeb 4, 2011
Wow, you're dumb even in non-political threads. At least you're consistent.
It only pops up like every 10 minutes in Beta view to tell you how to switch back. Plus it's right in the damn settings.
You can't even use 'there' vs 'their' correctly. If Digg sucks so bad, just don't come back.
whereismyjetpackFeb 4, 2011
The new CEO is really trying, and I give him props for that.
rufiohoFeb 4, 2011
Agreed. I like his effort and attitude.
bigtime2Feb 4, 2011
Looks like what he is doing is working. Lots of users seem to like the new design so far, that was released earlier this week.
whereismyjetpackFeb 5, 2011
he's also willing to point out where they screwed up instead of covering it up. I really respect that angle.

Facebook is now used for almost everything :)

v v v V
One of these things is not like the others,
One of these things just doesn't belong.
zero123Feb 4, 2011
The thing I wanted to point out on that survey, but didn't really have a good space to say this. I think you all should really look back at v2. I remember back in 2005/6 having a mental laundry list of articles I couldn't wait to have conversations about. Every time I went to the home page...it was all quality. No adds. Just interesting articles. v3 came out...and articles just started to get less interesting, got cool functionality though.
2 cents about a couple of other things.
1. Wider format = good. Easier to read. Digg v4 on a TV was really tough to read from my couch, even at the largest font settings. Web on TV is cool, its gonna get more popular. Its better now that the nav button on the top left got reorganized.
2. HATE the adds. Its just more noise. Google does it better. I don't notice them, and never look at them. You guys are blasting this stuff at us, and its just bringing down the user experience.
farhanleoFeb 4, 2011
Have to completely agree with you on #2.
danhuardFeb 4, 2011
FYI, Adblock Plus removes the DiggAds
farhanleoFeb 4, 2011
Thanks :)
krahzeeFeb 4, 2011
I'm sure your advertisers would love to read this :p
Suggestion? Just change the look of the ads integrated into the stories on any one page. I HATE accidentally reading ads. Perhaps put that same yellowish background behind the WHOLE ad, not just the sponsored by? It would make it much more distinguishable while not altering the function at all...
adcuzFeb 5, 2011
How do you expect them to pay for the resources that run this site and make a profit without the ads?
zero123Feb 5, 2011
I totally expect them to utilize advertising, I just think the graphics heavy, animating visual noise is intrusive. I don't get that from google's ads.
zero123Feb 7, 2011
Just wanted to say, I fired up Digg on my media center machine connected to my TV. New, wider format looks 10x better!
Before the change, the White Space on either side of the center column was taking up at least 50% of the screen. Its more like 75% now. Reading it is so much easier. Big improvement from my side
icanruleFeb 4, 2011
I want to come back to digg. I really liked version 3 and stuck with version 4 for a while until I stumbled upon reddit.com. Since then my readership has dropped significantly.
I try to come back every few weeks but now it's starting to become more like every month to see what changes they have made to the front page news.
A bit of a timeline:
Version 3: I would at least read every second article, daily.
Version 4: I would scan the frontpage and I would be lucky to find an article that interested me.
Version 4 Configured: This made it a little more tolerable but in the end if I want news from arttechnica then I would just go there and did go there instead (I wasn't a fan of taking content from other news sources and printing it on your page).
Version 4 now: This one instance is pretty good. I have clicked and left comments on 4 articles and I am only have way through the page. I may just consider this an anomaly but it's enough for me to increase how often I visit this page.
vtbarreraFeb 4, 2011
I'm all for Digg improving the quality of the average Top News post; but I think they have to be really careful when they assign the task to a select few to choose some of the content that goes to the front page.
Closed AccountFeb 4, 2011
Most of the times i find news on Top News section from big publishers. The theme of the Digg is to find content which we can't find elsewhere easily. This is how Reddit is nourishing. We can easily see what news big publishers are posting by going on their sites. Digg needs to improve Top News section by making it more interesting.
dfrankzorFeb 4, 2011
I like how they are now trying to actively get feedback from the community. The new CEO is clearly listening to user feedback. The new design is fantastic and really makes it feel a thousand times better, now we just need the algorithm to get fixed.
davidtcFeb 4, 2011
I hope everyone votes for this option
7. What is most important to you in algorithmically determining whether a submission is worthy of being displayed in Top News (choose all that apply)?
- Read before it was Dugg
Stop blind digging and most the crap and random blogspam will be gone.
zero123Feb 4, 2011
I totally agree. I think that has to have been one of the things about earlier version that lead to good user experience. Its been so long, but there was something about v2 that lead to me article clicking first...then coming back to digg. Its got to be one of the best quality filter...."I have to go back and digg that article because it really was that good."
davidtcFeb 5, 2011
Wasn't around for v2 and I am surprised I have never heard anyone mention it was in v2 before. It is always something I have and have seen others suggest.
krahzeeFeb 4, 2011
I sent a link to my post on the Digg Dialogg questions story, since I think it best describes how I feel. Here it is again:
"Not to sound confrontational, but has there been any discussion on how digg's current version relates to the mission statement it was started out to meet?
Specifically, do you feel the the site has lost it's way as it relates to the original goal of user submitted and edited content when mainstream sites now benefit so heavily from having HUGE numbers of followers in the "My News" tab?
In a sense, if a Time.com, for example, has 40000+ followers and the huge exposure that comes with that every time they post an article, don't they have a HUGE advantage over a smaller, newer start up with followers in the 100s? How does that startup close that gap if "My News" plays such a big role?
Isn't this artificially editing the balance of what has a shot at front page?
If so, doesn't that in sense take some of the editorial power out of the hands of the users and sort of contradict the missions statement of the site?
Understand, I am not trying to accuse any Digg employee of anything here. It just personally seems to me that this did not seem to be considered in the last version when the site was busy recommending Mainstream Media Sites to follow in the "My News"."

9. Based on what you do or don’t know about how Digg algorithmically determines story promotion for the homepage, how would you improve it?
I voted other and no place to explain so I will put it here.
I already submitted my survey so I don't recall the exact wording, but there was also a question with an option to pick for breaking news vs timeless news. Also based on what I don't know about the algorithm, this might already be apart of it.
Could an algorithm be put in to figure out breaking news over other news? Make something that compares headlines and descriptions to other submissions. Those that are very similar and showing up very often around the same time be spotted and put in a special section for breaking news. Add in something that spots how much a certain source is submitted around the same time. If the same source is submitted 20 times in 20 minutes it just might be breaking news. Now if the same source, same headlines and descriptions from other sources are showing up often at the same time, chances are better that it could be breaking news.
In this special section users (not a code) can determine if it is actually 1. breaking news and 2. front page worthy. Based on how many diggs in a time period the submission gets in this special section could determine if it is breaking news. Actual breaking news would of course have more diggs in a shorter time period than usual. We can already see that in the staff pick section, even if it is shown the front page, that doesn't mean the digg counter will go up very quick.
Would like to hear feedback if this could work or what could be changed to work better. Just a random thought I put together in a short period of time, so no real critical thinking went into it.

davidtc, i have always been impressed by the depth of your comments in any story about digg! Your zeal in the comments you make, in-spite of not being a frequent submitter has always shown how truthful you are in the comments you make. I like the fact that you are one of the harshest and honest criticizers of digg with no ulterior motives, but at the same time one of the best well wishers of digg!
This is not something I am writing after reading this particular comment, but your consistent comments in anything to do with digg!
I hope digg recognizes users like you, who mostly do not submit, but just comment and participate in the community in a very detailed manner. I hope someday, digg will have a commenters leaderboard and would love to see you up there!
danhuardFeb 4, 2011
We're listening! Great suggestion, I'll pass this along. Comments are a very high engagement signal, far more than a click or a Digg. We need to do more for users who take the time to write quality and thought provoking comments.
FPSmotoFeb 4, 2011
When is Thebroken coming back? I miss watching Ramzi tear s**t up with his awesome computer hacking skills.
Anyway, thanks for help making Digg a better place to get my news. I'll crack open this 40 and roll up this blunt as a toast to Digg staying successful for a really looong time.
davidtcFeb 5, 2011
Thanks. I really enjoy reading good articles about most things. I would love to see Digg get better cause it would draw more people here and that would turn into more stories and more interesting content. As much as the powerusers can piss me off, they do find a lot of content I wouldn't read if I were to look around myself, which is the purpose of Digg.

Digg is great. Digg is one of those sites that is at its best when it looks simple and clutter-free, though I know that achieving this is ironically complex!
