FTV:
"Campaign rhetoric and war rhetoric have always been interchangeable for years."
Yes, but not to the heights it has reached these last few years. The rhetoric has become too threatening and borders on incitement. No matter what party or beliefs a politician may have, there is no justification for harm or violence to be ever directed at them, or even inferred.
I hope Congresswoman Giffords pulls through. From what I've read about her today, we need more politicians like her, a moderate centrist.

There absolutely can be justification to try and kill some public/political figure but no such vile person exists today in our country's politics or public airwaves. We do not have a modern day version of Hitler around no matter how often the ignorant try to claim any given public figure is like Hitler.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

It's really sad to see what pot-heads are capable of when they get their hands on firearms. Hopefully the pot-headed fringe will own up to the fact that one of their own committed this atrocity. Hopefully, they'll learn to take a harder look at themselves because of what's happened here. Pot skews your perception of reality, and takes you away from the real world.

As a "pot-headed loonie" myself, I'd like to see your evidence that I am less capable of being a responsible member of society (and note that I'm not asking you to describe the clinically demostrable fact that cannabis exacerbates symptoms of schizophrenia sufferers, which is not the same thing as it making you crazy).
One of the reasons I enjoy smoking pot is that it puts me in a reflective mood, encouraging me to take a hard look at myself (as you suggest I should) and the world around me. This mood helps me - but is not necessary for - when I think about who I am, what I do, and how that affects the people around me and the world in which I live. It can often strongly increase my feelings of empathy.
I feel that it is as absurd to blame pot for this tragedy as it is to blame Palin, and I take great offense that you imply that I am capable of the same just because I enjoy smoking a particular plant.
I'm sure that you feel you're doing something good by denouncing pot-smokers - encouraging people to stay away from something that you believe is causing siginificant damage to the population - but it is my belief that your vilification of pot-smokers is unfounded, and hinders both the debate on the causes of violence, and the debate on drug use.

Sarah Palin's political action committee had this ad on their website. See image here: http://digg.com/news/politics/http_i_huffpost_com_gen_235408_sarah_palin_target_map_jpg
The SarahPAC ad recommends that supporters "target" Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) and 19 other members of Congress.
Within hours after the shooting,SarahPAC moved quickly to remove the gunsite map. Shame on you, Ms. Palin! Blood is on your hands! You should be prosecuted for inciting violence against a member of Congress.

A young woman in Arizona, Catie Parker, claimed on her Twitter feed that she went to high school and college with the gunman, and was in a band with him. She described his politics in the past as "left wing, quite liberal, & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy."

But not with a clear crosshair on a map. Plus according to you and the right, nobody cares or even reads the daily kos. Remember they don't matter. But Palin is God like and everyone listens to her. She works for Fox, the only 'Trusted' News source w/ 100 Trillion viewers and the highest ratings in the history of television.
Now all of a sudden you want to make Daily Kos creditable and legit with actual readers to defend Palin.
How does using 'Daily Kos did it' defense excuse Palin and her lock and load crosshair map rhetoric?
You keep bringing that up in defense of Palin.
There have been many on the left who have been critical of Markos Moulitsas use of 'The American Taliban'. Yet nobody on the right has even said a peep about Palin's anti-government gun carrying, crosshair on maps rhetoric.

@laborer
Anti-Government rhetoric that can incite violence is not a trivial matter.
When you have politicians talking about 2nd amendment remedies and talk radio saying the same type of rhetoric.
Ask yourself what would the reaction from the left be if this violent was coming from Muslims and Muslims leaders in the country were talking about the blood of tyrant or putting crosshairs on maps of GOP member up for re-elction.
Basically that kind of rhetoric can have consequences. So stop acting like it is no big deal.
What more proof do you need?
laborerJan 9, 2011
I dont disagree with you. They are riot inciters. Dont give in to them. Dont feed fuel to their fire. When you alienate half of the country, we only make it more likely that this kind of event will happen again.
jdenzerJan 9, 2011
@laborer
I am not alienating half the country. I am only alienating those in the political spotlight that have influential power. If I am a digger spouting anti-government rhetoric, nobody really cares. But if I am someone like Palin of BEck, there are people who listen and might take that rhetoric seriously. Which is why it is important for them to be careful of such rhetoric. They need to take responsibility and help the nation. Single them out will hopefully make them realize the danger of such rhetoric. If Palin really loves this county she would issue some statement either admitting or apologizing for her rhetoric. Let those who listen to her realize that there is no place for violence. And sadly Palin will remain silent and just wait for this to go away. Why do you think she scrubbed her sight of the crosshair map.

You are quite incorrect. I have called Kos a hive of left-wing hate. I know that many liberals read the site. Under no circumstances have I ever said it didn't matter.
And I've never said Palin is a god. In fact, I've said, she'd never get my vote for candidate.
jdenzerJan 9, 2011
And how does any of this excuse Palin and much of talk radio anti-government rhetoric that can incite violence? How does daily kos use of the term 'bull eye' excuse thing like Palin crosshair map, Angle's '2nd amendment remedies', or Bachmann's 'want Minnesota residents armed and dangerous'?
Look I know you think that that people on the right and left are smart enough to know the difference. But what about those who are mentally ill, like this young person?
It is time for people like Palin to take responsibility for their rhetoric.
And you can keep grasping at straws trying to make the same connection w/ your daily kos example.
But I bet you anything that Palin, Angle, Bachmann and talk radio's rhetoric is far more dangerous than some daily kos entry of the term 'bull eye'
Like I said Palin needs to be responsible and speak out, but sadly she will remain silent and just frantically scrub any evidence of her rhetoric on the net.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

we all knew this day was coming with the hate talk coming from the republican party both on the radio and on tv.
readmymindJan 9, 2011
The nut-job that tried to justify this act based on Giffords' voting record only proves the point of those who point to right-wing intolerance and hate talk as inciting this kind of behavior. Only a very dangerous and insensitive person would make that kind of statement. For the rest of us, it's obvious which side of the political divide is more violent, and the tea bag crowd is the perfect embodiment. When you have this much anti-government hate being spewed over and over by the right, you're bound to get spillover. Constant war is another thing that desensitizes people to violence. The shooter, who is 22, has now lived with the killing of thousands of people, civilians and military alike, since he was a young kid. What do you expect?

I appreciate your point and apologize if it sounded like I was politicking. My tea party comment comes from direct experience with several of them in my area. One of them actually told me after Obama was elected that I should buy a gun for self protection because conservatives weren't going to stand for his liberal policies. Talk like that scares the hell out of me and I'm not sure it will be helpful to the body politic to simply embrace such people as good Americans and walk away. Good third party candidates make sense in theory, but some I've seen have been even more divisive and extreme. (ie. Lyndon LaRouche style). I do agree that people need to work together and look beyond politics.
laborerJan 9, 2011
Dont elect crazies. Elect sound third party candidates. Surely there is more to Americans than just democrat or republican, and so it should be in our countries legislation.
The reason the right is so angry is because they are poor too. The rural area of the united states is brutally poor. No one talks about it though. Everyone acts like only the cities are poor. Farmers are the most underpayed job in the US, despite these people being historically speaking the most productive people in the history of Earth (considering how many people their work feeds)
We need to stop blaming our poverty on each other, and see that the whole world wants to see us eat each other alive. Dont allow that to happen.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

His mental problems are what make his motives pointless, he could've been anywhere and could have picked anyone. To believe that this is motivated politically would require someone of sound mind, yet to be proven, and if you read anything he writes and the obvious instability witnessed by classmates etc, the key component is not so much politics as it is pathos. Random would be the wrong assessment in any situation, everything is caused by something, but your response lacks the depth I think you imply and i think what you are implying is essentially wrong.

This is what happens when you brainwash people with propaganda and then instruct them, "Don't retreat, instead RELOAD."
Palin, Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Fox "news" and the removal of the Fairness Doctrine from the public airwaves all share blame for these murders.
o76923Jan 9, 2011
If you believe the fairness doctrine would improve this situation, you don't understand what it actually said. It only required that broadcast news networks cover important stories in a manner that's not too biased. That means Fox News would be immune and they are allowed to present opinions however they want.
nygenxerJan 9, 2011
The Fairness Doctrine and the Equal Time Rule both promote the "fair and balanced" coverage which we do not currently have on the nation's television and radio broadcasts.

Waitaminute - did you write that Fox "news" is not too biased? Yes you did. Holy s**t, dude, you can't be serious!

Of course fox news is biased. They just aren't a broadcast network, they are part of a cable our satellite package. The Fairness Doctrine only applies to terrestrial broadcasts.
nygenxerJan 14, 2011
We're obviously not discussing cable news networks but the four major commercial broadcast channels on television: CBS, ABC, NBC and FOX, from which FOX broadcasts "news" content on every local Fox station across the country that is clearly right wing propaganda.

Sarah Palin Knows She's Responsible For This And She Could Care Less.
thudwhomperJan 10, 2011
Just from reading the comments in this thread, I can see that we are in for some dark, dark days ahead as a nation.
We have become a deeply divided nation, and a house divided against itself cannot stand. Gone is tolerance. Gone is compromise. Gone is doing what's right for the common good. The only thing left now is Us and Them.
The violence has started. We've been here before. We are regressing to our colonialist/cowboy past, a history full of bloodshed and destruction. Down this path lies no happiness for anyone, only pain and suffering for a long time.
Before we descend into full-scale rioting and anarchy, let me ask a simple question: Do we really need to go there?
