news.yahoo.com— Weak demand for pricey flat-screen TVs and notebook computers helped push Best Buy Co.'s fourth-quarter net income down 16 percent.

Best Buy won't start closing stores but they just have to realize that people aren't going to pay an extra $200 more a year later for almost the same laptop but may just have 50 GB of extra space on it. Best Buy is overpriced on a majority of things they have in the first place.
Let's think go to Best Buy and buy a regular 6 foot HDMI cable = $25
Go to Amazon and buy a 6 foot HDMI cable = $5 after shipping
I work at bestbuy, people who say s**t like this don't understand why bestbuys around. It really serves two purposes, high end stuff you can't get in many other places, and people who don't really know what they need or aren't very technically inclined. The reason our costs are maybe a little higher than wal mart is because there's a huge emphasis on customer service and our store is actually well maintained. After having worked there I walk through other stores and see just how much they lack in quality or service. The other thing is best buy always tries new things and trying to innovate and expand. They're not ripping you off. Hdmi prices are MSRP and it's where we make our money there's very little mark up on things like computers. They deserve the support, just my opinion.
Best Buy is almost the same as Circuit City from when I worked there. Either know your stuff and put on a smile to make your $8-$9 an hour of gtfo. Clearly you must be a manager or someone making more than the average Joe on the sales floor.
no I'm not, I'm inventory, making 9.50 an hour. I've covered sales floor too. It's a really good environment, you get treated well and generally sales guys know their stuff.
Guess that whole 30$ for a monster hdmi cable isn't working out to well for them. Educated consumers are becoming more common. That and considering the current economy, luxury items are the first expenses cut.
The stores they are opening more of is the Best Buy Mobile stores. They sell nothing but cell phones from all of the major carriers. This section of their business is booming. Big time.
I guess it would be cool to be able to go into one cell phone store and see what all the carriers offer, if I wasn't already contracted to AT&T for 2 years. Damn you IPhone.

Another reason Best Buy is not as good as Walmart is the gate keeper at the entrance of Best Buy watching you like a hawk vs the little old lady at the entrance of Walmart. Best Buy makes you feel uncomfortable as their security is not discreet but, in fact in a very conspicuous and menacing location.
That's kind of the point, deterrence. There's no reason to feel uncomfortable, no one watches you like a hawk, the only thing they do is watch areas on the camera where there are no employees or if they've been tipped off that someone is acting suspiciously. Not to mention Wal mart has the same thing, it's just not the greeter like it is at best buy, it's a dedicated loss prevention guy.

It wasn't so much weak demand for flat screen TVs...it is that the price of flat screen TVs dropped by almost 50% in lesss than 2 years.

You don't think 10% unemployment has something to do with it?
Pdub_killaMar 25, 2011

Huzzah to discount retailers for showing Best Buy that their prices are too high for the same product.

I have mixed feelings.
I hate to see anyone loose their jobs, but i really hate best buy.
womentobeautyMar 25, 2011
That'll be the long story to watch whether Best Buy will survive with the new strategy: opening the small shops for mobile phones

It's hard to feel bad for a company that screws you over.
