The best comment sort is being deployed as we speak, and should be available in the next 20-30 minutes!
fxspec06Apr 12, 2011
It's probably the best comment sort option I've seen so far.

Great job, Digg Team! Just curious if there will ever be a "made popular" or "promoted" for submissions that hit Top News. Also, will we ever get a dupe detector?
While I loved reading about the dog in Japan that was rescued after 3 weeks, I could have avoided seeing it the 100 or more times it was subbed on Digg. Just curious!
lethainApr 12, 2011StaffSubmitter
Having a little trouble understanding your first suggestion (sorry!), is that a notification that you're asking for (we have one for promoted stories, is it not working for you?), or is it a new story list (if so, how would it be different than existing ones)?
For duplicates, we're absolutely thinking about how to address that, but are still trying to find the right approach to reducing stories on similar topics without squashing higher quality stories which come a bit later (and a bundle of other considerations :). We'd be glad to here any suggestions here, and will definitely continue trying to figure it out on our side as well.
emfkApr 12, 2011
In V3, any submission that made it to the front page of Digg would say "made popular" and then the time stamp for when it made popular.
lethainApr 12, 2011StaffSubmitter
Ah, I had a total mind fail on that one. I understand now. :-)

I liked with the old dupe detector that it showed you possible dupes, then you clicked the button to promise it's not actually a dupe to submit. Beyond that I think a hand-sort of dupes would be necessary to weed out the crap... which is kind of what we do with diggs and buries, isn't it?
Speaking of buries, I also liked it when there was a choice to select as to why you were burying a story. If something were to be buried as a dupe enough times you would know to remove it, or at least have a look at it. Give us, as a community, the opportunity to give you more information to improve your algo. :)
bobosmitorApr 12, 2011
I would like to see who is burying a story, please.
weirddemonApr 13, 2011
That won't happen. And it's probably best that way. I fairly certain Matt Williams explained that in his Digg Dialogg a while ago.

Re: We'd be glad to hear any suggestions here
I like the fact that you want to hear suggestions, but if Digg really wanted suggestions, they should setup a "Suggestions" question where people could post suggestions as comments, and let other users digg or bury those suggestions.
You can see my suggestions at:

Dayamn! I gotta use this somewhere in my code. Digg sure do employ some creative people these days.
absolutelytrueApr 12, 2011
I look forward to the improvements. :)
bestatitApr 13, 2011
i think someone said it best last time.. Digg is turning into a news feed for popular sites people already visit on a regular.. sites that have niche's and creative/fun content are getting let out.. not to hate, but i don't want to see CNN news on frontpage.. if i want to see stuff for CNN i would visit CNN... ect.. i know digg is trying to build back traffic, but from what i notice on this experiment is that MANY stuff that hit frontpage don't get lots of hits/views according to the counter because PEOPLE really don't want to see that...
anomaly100Apr 13, 2011
Honestly, I have been disillusioned with Digg lately. Good luck with your changes.
dirtyfriesApr 12, 2011
I'm getting a bug on some pages where the Best comments are sorted by age, and the Oldest comments are sorted by Best...like the two are flip flopped.
dirtyfriesApr 12, 2011
Always happy to see improvements being made, but if it doesn't work, please put it back.
Things have been getting better around here.
The recent promotion of this: http://mashable.com/2011/04/12/social-networks-infographic/ as per the new algorithm shows it needs some work.
danhuardApr 12, 2011
Thanks for the feedback! But let us know more detail :) Why is that story not great? Is it the content type, digging fraud, etc? How would you algorithmically prevent that story from getting promoted?
dirtyfriesApr 12, 2011
Well, in this case (and maybe the user is a plant for the experiment) but the person has one follower, the story is over 14 hours old on Mashable (and on Digg), and only managed 34 Diggs.
That to me says the story wasn't very hot, or popular, so I can't really see why the algorithm would pick it.
To me, Digg should strive to promote new content faster that's more pertinent to this moment. It's so we don't end up with dupes from stories from 4 days ago.
I can appreciate the desire for variance in the stories, but the idea of Digg is to float interesting stuff up and keep lame stuff down. The algorithm can only do so much, gotta leave power with the users.
As far as prevention, I don't claim to know how your algorithms look, but I would focus on key words possibly cross referenced with recent events, or just using the stats at your disposal that show this story wasn't moving up at a very fast pace. I also assume there's some sort of minimum Digg count to hit front page, which I'm betting this wasn't even close to.
superman101Apr 12, 2011
That unfort, has probably more to do with turning the switch on in the middle of a day :-(. But your right I agree, it shouldn't have picked that one.
bossm4nApr 12, 2011
Are we talking about stories being algorithmically promoted or staff picks/hot stories? I see submissions regularly that are over 24 hours old with single digit diggs that are selected by the staff and promoted, sometimes with only 30 diggs. If it's truly breaking news or a hot story I could understand it being selected, but more often than not, it's an old photo or video that's made it's way around the internet a few dozen times.
absolutelytrueApr 12, 2011
And a lot of times they are also dupes.
narachinvestApr 13, 2011
That would make a lot of sense as everyone cannot be submitting the diggs all the time; and frankly comments do have value, as the person(s) would have read the linked content before expressing their comments and views on the subject or topic.
smurfzApr 12, 2011
Algorithm experiments? Meaning let's have people hit the front page with only 30 diggs and 1 comment?
phr34kyApr 12, 2011
What part of
z = Statistics2.pnormaldist(1-power/2)
phat = 1.0*pos/n
(phat + z*z/(2*n) - z * Math.sqrt((phat*(1-phat)+z*z/(4*n))/n))/(1+z*z/n)
Didn't you understand?

Can we remove 'Hot Stories' on the right sidebar & replace it with 'Top News in All Topics'. These tend to have a lot more activity than the hot topics which are the most popular stories in the entire community in 24hrs and it does them little justice to be pushed so far down. Expose your most interesting/controversial content of the the day. Users love arguing over these stuff.. don't push it down there like an unwanted child..
You can give the 'Hot Stories' exposure in the form of a trending module : http://i.imgur.com/HBGJZ.jpg .

My suggestion is to have a notice sent to our e-mails telling us we made Top News, or that our subs were made "popular". If that could be possible, it would be wonderful. Thank you.

Great to see that Digg front page remained spam free from the last few months. Tweaking Digg algorithm is also a positive move.
I have one question though why this story is not appearing in upcoming section or upcoming gaming section? The story was submitted about 7 hours ago.

ok this is bit off topic comment but I wanted to convey this feedback to digg. Time and again I have sent a message to the support team but I am not satisfied.
So I hope someone from the digg staff will help me out.
1. Its no secret the number of diggs have gone down drastically ever since V4. Now the reason behind the same is that digg have removed the 'digg bar'. In my opinion the digg bar was a fantastic piece of add on which let the users decide whether they want to "comment", "bury" and "digg" stories on the fly. Now I dont know what issues websites had with the digg bar which led to its removal in V4. But I will like to make a very important point here. What is the mindset of the users on digg.com? Do you expect people to digg first without checking the story and then click OR do you expect people to click on a link and then come back and then digg a story? I would say none of the possibilities are on. That is where the digg bar comes in. I can bet the number of diggs, comments and quality stories will go up drastically and the number of spam stories will go down since the digg bar will be giving a chance to the user to decide on the fly. With the current scenario by not including the digg bar you are basically expecting something which will not happen. The user will click, go to another site and dont even care to digg/bury/comment a story or worse: give a high bounce rate.
2. There is no way to distinguish between a story that hit the front page and the one that did not. Please bring back some sort of an indication: "Made Popular 10 Secs ago". Trust me visually it makes a huge difference to anyone who uses the site!
3. Upcoming is flawed by design. When I am in a category say tech and when I have to check upcoming stories in tech I have to first click upcoming then again click tech. Cant we have a direct upcoming link in the respective categories? I am a BE by education and I dont think it should not be more then a dynamic function call to achieve this.
This again shows the fact that V3 was awesome by design and functionality. But nothing is lost so far, I love digg, been a member for almost 2 years and wont ever leave this place.
Hopefully someone would listen to this feedback and implement them.
Digg On!
Thanks.
richidApr 13, 2011Staff
1. The bulk of this argument rests on the premise that the DiggBar increased Digg counts. That is a false assumption and as such I won't go into the other details of why the DiggBar isn't a good idea (IMHO). You are correct, however, in saying that Digg counts have gone down since the release of V4. I will point out that these numbers had been trending downward prior to the V4 release but did drop more precipitously thereafter.
2. The timestamps on Top News are relative to promotion time but, indeed, there is no way to distinguish this on other pages, such as the permalink. We'll revisit this again but it can get tricky if we're running multiple algorithms promoting different stories.
3. Not sure I fully agree with this since it makes the context of a primary navigation link dependent upon the current page. Then again, UI/UX is not my forte (understatement) so it's worth bringing up with the frontend team.
Thanks for the suggestions!
xraymasterApr 14, 2011
I have suggested the 3rd point in the past - http://digg.com/news/business/how_digg_is_built/20110329173830:4768b2146a1b43369a28f21ab2919186#20110329220627:5d18b04a5430493d8e2022735f30e991
I don't know, if you've visited reddit, but they have a similar way of checking out new stories in a particular sub-reddit. That's the only reason why HOT stories get upvoted fast and reach the Front Page.
Also, the digg bar would definitely increase the digg count. I second that.
