Is this really news? Everything is going up. This was expected since the industry has been having an especially hard time ever since the recession.

Than again people have been traveling less by since the airlines keep raising there fees and seem happy to have there customers and staff groped by the feds. Hopefully the dam airlines will just quietly go out of business.

It has more with people losing jobs and the bad economy than anything else. People are waking up to the fact that they can no longer afford to spend money they don't have. That their jobs are much less secure than they used to be.

Oh, and I recently traveled over seas and came back. At no point was I searched or "groped."

This is right up there with the saying "Beatings will continue until moral improves".

If I can't dirve there, not going there even Amtrac is high now. looked at going from MN to FL would take 48 hours and almost 800 a person.

Airflight is more and more a pain. Unfortunately, there is often no other choice (a captive audience). So, I'll pay my 60 bux to check a bag (both ways), take off my shoes and walk through the 'naked' scanner, stuff myself in to my cramped seat (or pay for exit row), skip the charge for drinks, movie, and lunch and just pray the plan arrives on time.
notmanMar 25, 2011
Of course. What is better than profit? More profit. As long as people keep flying, and paying these higher rates, the airlines will keep jacking the rates.

Southwest still does not charge a checked bag fee. Vote with your feet whenever possible - its the only message the airlines ever hear. Unfortunately, that is not an option for overseas. But if folks at least choose the alternative whenever it is available, it will have some effect.
lilrabbit129Mar 25, 2011
The only reason I don't fly with Southwest would be if I was going somewhere they don't have a flight to. Otherwise ...
*puts on sunglasses*
Southwest FTW.

A$$holes. This is part of the reason why flying is no longer fun. Everything should be in the ticket price.
When is the last time anyone took a trip that involved a flight that did not involve baggage?
Why should I NOT have to pay if I carry a 25 pound bag on the plane as a "carry on" but have to pay $50 if I check that same 25 pound bag?
brucealmightyMar 25, 2011
Why should I have to pay a higher ticket price to underwrite your checked bag when I (and lots of others) manage to travel with only a single carry-on bag?
bigbri069Mar 25, 2011
You missed the point. 1 bag each. Each bag weighs 25 pounds. Whats the difference between a carry-on and checked bag?
brucealmightyMar 26, 2011
OK...I did mistake your point.
In fact I agree completely and have long felt it would make a lot more sense to offer free checking of one carry-on sized bag while charging extra to bring a carry-on on board which would not fit under the seat.
Here is the logic -
-Reduces waiting times at TSA screening points with less carryons to be screened.
-Enhances traveler satisfaction by checking bags instead of dragging them along everywhere, especially when rushing to make tight connections.
-Greatly simplifies and shortens boarding and deplaning processes, especially now with so many full or nearly full flights.
-Improves safety with less overall clutter and less potential for flying debris in the cabin in case of an emergency.
-Improves passenger comfort with less baggage in the cabin and a bit more legroom and elbow room.
-Improves security by reducing the total volume of baggage inside the cabin, lessening the potential for contraband/weapons.
-Charges extra only to those who insist on bringing aboard carry-on items that will not fit under the seat. The charge is a "convenience fee" for bypassing the luggage carousel at the destination and for creating additional delays at the security checkpoints and boarding/deplaning processes.
Any additional labor costs in baggage handling should be more than offset by reductions in security screening labor plus greatly improved boarding and deplaning efficiencies, ie. improved on-time departures, connections and general passenger satisfaction levels.
So of course there's no chance of it ever actually happening........

Totally agree.
