Forget Black Friday, they have Black July
dervish108Aug 25, 2010
It changes every year according to the lunar calender, I think it will be held 11 days earlier on our own Gregorian Calender next year.

Replace Ramadan with Christmas.
godaimightyAug 25, 2010
During Ramadan you fast during the daytime and you then are able to eat when the sun sets. And the Muslim you know probably do party and spend some money because at the end of Ramadan there is always a small festival where everyone pretty much binges to regain strength as well as celebrate their faith.
stutimandalAug 25, 2010
Muslims cannot survive at the North pole during Ramadan. It will always be day there.
fbass2000Aug 25, 2010
well unless, the Ramadan fall on winter time
n064Aug 25, 2010
you know, im muslim and i always though wtf they do up there during ramadan. I seriously would probably die. In that case, they are not required to fast if its going to decrease their health in significant ways.
wmouazzenAug 25, 2010
The consensus I understand is that you fast on Saudi time.
SergeTomikoAug 25, 2010
Islam is not monolithic. The point of Ramadan is to focus on the blessings of God and the wisdom of his teachings. Most would argue that fasting all day and eating a decadent meal every night is missing the point. Letting yourself die is also missing the point.
evange106Aug 25, 2010
@wmouazzen
It has nothing to do with time zones, it has to do with daylight hours.
(for those who dont know, the closer you get to the north or south pole, the more extreme day and night get. So for example, in winter the sun never rises, and in summer the sun never sets.)
snypaAug 25, 2010
Yes, it's all about daylight hours, but in extreme circumstances I think what wmouazzen meant was that in areas close to the poles, Saudi dawn/dusk times are used because the hours are so extreme.
Also, what serge said.
ubitendoAug 25, 2010
I don't know why non-muslims consider Ramadan to be a "holiday month." It's a month where you're f**king fasting from sunrise to sunset, what's so fun about about?
However, the day after Ramadan is over, that's the f**king holiday.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
rahazAug 25, 2010
Holiday= Holy Day
Sounds like every day in Ramadan to me.
ubitendoAug 25, 2010
Don't be a smartass. You know I was referring the colloquial meaning.
omarlassanAug 25, 2010
Its a whole Holy Month, and yes you are right, the 3 days that follows it (EID) are a holiday
mescadAug 25, 2010
For those who eat a normal amount of food and go about their normal evening routines, it's not much "fun" I guess. However, the growing tradition to gorge yourself at night, to save up for the daytime means that many observers end up eating a lot more during Ramadan than the rest of the year. Are you really fasting if you're just too full to eat?
ubitendoAug 25, 2010
Umm, have you tried stuffing yourself after not eating from sunrise to sunset? Your stomach will hurt pretty bad and you can get sick doing it.
The only people who stuff themselves during Ramadan are athletes because they need all those calories. The average person doesn't bother to do it.
mescadAug 25, 2010
The sun rose at 7:02am where I live, and will set at 8:17pm tonight. If I had a huge breakfast at 6:30 and ate a huge supper at 8:30, all we're talking about is skipping lunch. It's not too difficult. Lots of people skip breakfast and survive on 16+ hours of fasting between their evening meal and lunch.
jurbleAug 25, 2010
The not-drinking is what gets ya.
omarlassanAug 25, 2010
Ramadan is not only about abstaining from food, God doesnt need our hunger, what He values is that what we do during this period of hunger like charitable work, meditation. Muslims abstain from all distracting work(Food, Sex, Back-biting) during the period of sunrise to sunset
snypaAug 25, 2010
Your assuming muslims actually do that, we don't. It's common to eat an average sized meal at sunset, then a regular meal before dawn. You assume its the norm for muslims to gorge themselves and stuff their faces so they can somehow work aorund the system, this certainly isn't the case. Not saying some don't do that, but one of the main points to it is that we don't cram food while we can.
What "growing tradition" are you talking about?
Even if we wanted to eat more than usual, the stomach shrinks after a few days of fasting anyway and can't stretch to full capacity like how it is usually able to do so, thus making it physically difficult.
mescadAug 26, 2010
"What "growing tradition" are you talking about?"
Uh, the one that the article was about. It's not the way Ramadan was meant to be observed, but that's what is happening. Ramadan is becoming more commercialized and I'm glad you haven't seen it yourself, but it's out there.
doctordbxAug 25, 2010
Using foul language and cursing is breaking your fast as well.
oxidaneAug 25, 2010
People are so gullible to be doing this for something they've never seen.
bloodwineAug 25, 2010
If any of you have lived in a major city, you know there are neighborhoods and areas that you tend to avoid, especially at night.
I work in Memphis, Tennessee and it is not a matter of being racist, it is a matter of being safe. There are just areas that you want to avoid if at all possible.
I am unfamiliar with the DC area, but I see nothing wrong with the guidelines in the article. It is aimed at people unfamiliar with the territory.
I remember the first time I drove to St. Louis as a teenager to go to a Cardinals game. Everybody would tell me, "If you make a wrong turn and end up going over the Mississippi then you need to turn around immediately on the other side of the bridge and get the hell out of there."
bloodwineAug 25, 2010
Ignore this comment. I accidentally posted it to the wrong story earlier today and then deleted it immediately after realizing what I done. Apparently Digg v4 brought it back to life when it was rolled out.

The best thing about Ramadan is the food Muslims eat during Iftar.
In most Ramadan stalls in countries like Malaysia and Singapore, they have stalls sthat sells Arab, Middle Eastern, European, indian and even jewish food for iftar.
I've been compiling reciped of food eaten during Ramadan iftar. But i warn you, it'll make you very hungry:

I think fasting now and then is a cultural tradition we could use in the US.

Fasting doesn't seem to mean much here in the UK. I've got loads of mates who are Muslim, half of them don't even bother and the other half stuff themselves silly. Doesn't that defeat the point of the true meaning to fast? They agree.
doctordbxAug 25, 2010
Ramadan in Dubai = gorge yourself when the sun is down, moan about it when the sun is up.
grahamuk82Aug 25, 2010
FTA: "bottles of Vimto, a popular drink to break the fast."
As a British person, this is hilarious
evange106Aug 25, 2010
As a non-British person, please explain.
grahamuk82Aug 25, 2010
It's a soft drink but sort of extremely British. The idea that this soft drink that was created in Liverpool or something that many people have ingrained as part of their childhood being popular outside of the UK just seems unusual.
Imagine something from your childhood that noone outside of the area you live would be expected to have experience (I don't know, twinkies or something) being extremely popular in a startlingly different culture.

I have this picture saved which I titled "ramadan_guy", taken from a Boston Globe "Big Picture" article on Ramadan. I've been meaning to 'shop it for over a year, but never got around to it. It's pretty badass on it's own, but could be improved with clowns or explosions or monkeys or something.

Religion used to make money? You're kidding me.
agrymarineAug 30, 2010
Salam,
Well i agree with you at some point and disagree with you at some points.
Agreeing: that most of the things which are now entertained by Islamic followers are not worth doing it like buying and spending money on unwanted things.
Disagreeing: that many things are of daily use so, here we can't say that they are making a misuse of their money and spending it on unwanted things, what is useful should be marked as useful.
Thanks for asking the question.

Parvez Khan
