Verizon doesn't have reception issues. You're thinking of AT&T.
gabeutseksJul 4, 2010
Except that it's a hardware issue and most likely still drop the call. Also while not as prevalent, Verizon has signal issues.

But can you use voice and data at the same time with the iPhone on Verizon? How well will it work Internationally?
shozikuJul 3, 2010
I don't think any iapple products let you run more than one thing at a time.
purseonalityJul 3, 2010
Somebody hasn't been doing their research.
charlotte_webJul 3, 2010
Even before iOS 4, you could always talk on the phone and surf the web at the same time (or run any other app).
productfredJul 3, 2010
It's a technical limitation of CDMA. Voice and Data use the same pipeline. When you're with T-Mobile or AT&T, you can be on the phone while browsing the web or downloading something since voice and data are on different frequencies. With Sprint and Verizon, the Voice has priority and data will disconnect for the duration of the call. Not only that, CDMA doesn't se SIM cards, and I doubt Apple's going to make 2 versions of the iPhone, even if it is "World Edition" with a SIM slot.
lukerulsJul 3, 2010
I don't know about that - Apple would have to make a CDMA specific version of the iPhone anyway, right?
charlotte_webJul 3, 2010
I think Apple's problem is that they don't want to have to manufacture two different lines of the same phones. that's why they've been in talks with Qualcomm over Q's dual GSM/CDMA chip.

Here in Canada, we have 4 carriers with the iPhone, two of which use CDMA.
riotJul 3, 2010
telus and bell do not use CDMA on the iphone canada does not have any true GSM providers any more.
They have all moved to the new platform HSPA
That is why they now have the iphone their new network was completed nov 2009/dec 2009 time frame.

@Charlotte_Web >> "I think Apple's problem is that they don't want to have to manufacture two different lines of the same phones."
But every other manufacturer seems to do just fine with that. Many companies make multiple models, in both CDMA and GSM flavors. I remember when RIM made *identical* Blackberry Curves that worked on all US carriers. Motorola makes the CDMA Droid and the GSM Milestone simultaneously. And Samsung will soon have different Galaxy S based models for all US carriers. If it's good for them... why wouldn't it be good for Apple?
Right now, Apple makes the 3GS in one size... and the iPhone 4 in 2 sizes and 2 colors. That's only 5 unique iPhones.
But, Apple makes 18 unique iPod Nanos... and 6 unique iPads.
Considering Apple could *double* their iPhone footprint in America by adding Verizon as one of their carriers... I think adding a couple extra iPhones would certainly be good for them.
Apple decided to offer the iPhone on a total of 5 carriers in the UK... yet Verizon has more customers than the entire population of the UK.
I suspect the only reason Apple hasn't offered an iPhone on Verizon is because of the exclusivity deal with AT&T.
But it's par for the course for cell phone manufacturers to offer their products on all carriers. Ask Motorola, RIM, HTC, Samsung, Nokia, LG how they do with that.
productfredJul 3, 2010
@all the canadians: Bell and Telus use a combination of CDMA and GSM, but are primarily CDMA, as opposed to Rogers, who is GSM (and partnered with AT&T).
darkstar3333Jul 4, 2010
If the iPhone operates on Bell/Telus networks in CDMA then they would work under Verizon so I don't think thats the case.
productfredJul 4, 2010
@ Darkstar3333: I just told you, Bell and Telus use BOTH CDMA and GSM. There is no CDMA iPhone. Period.
elranzerJul 3, 2010
Doesn't matter. No one talks and surfs the net at the same time. It's a red herring argument.
charlotte_webJul 3, 2010
I've done it. It's not something I use every phone call, but when you need it, it really comes in handy. It's great when someone emails me a document while I'm talking to them, I don't have to interrupt my phone call.
bosskeyJul 3, 2010
In case you're being serious, I do it all the time. For things like "I've never been to that restaurant before, honey, so keep talking while I look up the address on map..."
mojo8472Jul 3, 2010
The EU mandates that only GSM be used in all areas that the EU has jurisdiction.
brettotte1Jul 3, 2010
On my droid I talk & surf simultaneously. You're doing it wrong.
qumahlinJul 3, 2010
No, you don't. It's simply not possible. Why do you think you never see it mentioned in any of their commercials yet its in every iphone commercial.
I own an iphone and a droid and just tested to make 100% sure, and yes indeed you are wrong. Unless you have an Evo with Sprint and are in a 4g area you are lying out your ass.

FTA: "Apple bars the use of such tools as Adobe Systems Inc.’s Flash, used to make video run more smoothly on mobile devices."
Wait... what? Flash makes video run MORE SMOOTHLY on mobile devices? Sorta undermines the credibility of the article for me. There have been some nifty tech demos, sure - but I have yet to see a situation where Flash makes streaming video smoother on a "mobile" device in widespread practical use.
osteor10Jul 3, 2010
my android based phone runs flash very smoothly and inside the browser. stop talking out of your ass.
dodgev83Jul 3, 2010
<--- Remembers when digg comments didn't require a technical explanation of Flash.
The article says Flash is used to make video run "more smoothly". Not only is this *not* what Flash is used for (without it you won't see the embedded video at all, it doesn't take existing videos and make them smoother), it's ironic because adding the flash wrapper to a video actually makes it *less smooth* than running it natively on the device.
I agree with Sourc3. The basic premise is good, but I'm sick of journalists not doing their research on technical articles. The local Fox reporter (I know I know) who covered the iPhone launch called it the "iPhone 4G" no less than 6 times...
sourc3Jul 4, 2010
Please, indicate on which point I was talking out of my ass? Flash does NOT exist to make video run more smoothly. My point was less that "FLASH SUXXX0RS" and more that the reporting of the article was shoddy. Play the same video in a Flash wrapper vs. natively on the device, and let's see which runs more smoothly.
(Also, thanks DodgeV83 for articulating what I could not properly do myself)

Flash videos are CPU hungry, that is why they added hardware acceleration/H.264 hardware decoding in 10.1.

The rumor more accurately goes like this: Verizon is rolling out their LTE network in January. AT&T and other carriers are also moving to LTE; which means it's more feasible for Apple to move to Verizon because they won't have 2 platforms to support (CDMA/GSM), they will be rolling out another iPhone4(G!) around that time which will be LTE-only. 1 platform to support, but multiple carriers.
It's a long shot, but it's possible.
lukerulsJul 3, 2010
That would make the most sense to me as well. Although it would suck to be an early adopter while LTE is only available in a small percentage of the coutry if the device couldn't fall back to CDMA.
bootesJul 3, 2010
But I doubt their LTE network at launch will have the same coverage as their current network. Just look at Sprint's '4G' network, it's been out for awhile and has nowhere near the coverage of their 3G network.
I think they'd have to support Verizon's current 3G CDMA network along with LTE if they're going to release in January.
qumahlinJul 3, 2010
"AT&T and other carriers are also moving to LTE;"
What you fail to recognize is that LTE is not a true standard and they are rolling out their own flavors of it. So while both may call it "LTE" the devices will not be cross network compatible.

The different "flavors" have nothing to do with the radio in the device. The differences in implementations can all be changed via software.

Try using the droid incredible for one day, then you begin to realize how much verizon doesn't need the iphone
frankyg11Jul 3, 2010
I have an Incredible and love it but the Android space is a mess. A newer, barely better Moto Droid X is coming out at the same price. It wont face the same manufacturing issues as the Incredible because it doesn't have an oled screen, so no shortage waits. So at the same price and better availability the Droid X will cannibalize the Incredible's sales which'll weigh on a person's choice to buy.
The thing that really pisses me off though is I have to wait for HTC to push out the Froyo update for my Incredible. I wanted a Nexus One so I'd only have to wait for Google to release updates but Verizon decided they didn't need it because of HTC's Incredible. I would rather have an iPhone at this point.
mscripJul 3, 2010
@mikedzl >> "Try using the droid incredible for one day, then you begin to realize how much verizon doesn't need the iphone"
So Apple should just ignore 92 million Verizon customers? It's fine for Apple to have the iPhone on 5 carriers in the UK... but 2 carriers in the US is too many.... right?
That's like a company saying "we sell our products in Walgreens... we don't need to sell in Rite-Aid too"Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
qumahlinJul 3, 2010
"It's fine for Apple to have the iPhone on 5 carriers in the UK... but 2 carriers in the US is too many.... right?"
Yes cause all those carriers use the same exact frequency hence no need to do any changes to the device...Why don't you ask the real question of why is it that once again America is the only country to not adopt an international standard.
Take a CDMA only device to any other country and its nothing but a paperweight.
mscripJul 3, 2010
Look... we can't go back in time and tell Verizon and Sprint not to use CDMA. It's here... there are 140 million customers using CDMA in America... and all other cell phone manufacturers are embracing it. It's a market that's too big to ignore.
Do you think Motorola had second thoughts about making the CDMA Droid? No way... it's their best-selling phone at the moment.
See if this makes sense:
Apple Executive #1: We should make a CDMA iPhone for Verizon
Apple Executive #2: Hell no... that's crazy talk
Motorola Executive #1: We should make the Droid 2 for Verizon
Motorola Executive #2: Hell yeah! Remember how many original Droids we sold the first time?
And the same is true for HTC, Samsung, LG, etc. Why does every other manufacturer make phones for Verizon... but you think Apple won't?
I understand that a CDMA phone is "limited" in that it's US-only. However, it's still a huge market, and everyone else seems to be OK with it. Verizon and Sprint haven't gone out of business because all of their customers have switched to AT&T and T-Mobile to get world phones.
I'm pretty sure Motorola doesn't care that the Droid, Droid 2 and Droid X won't work in other countries. Neither will my aging Verizon Blackberry Curve. I bought that phone knowing I couldn't use it in another country. And I'm fine with that.
Do you think every iPhone user is a world traveler? Sure it's nice to be able to take your phone oversees. Yet, Verizon and Sprint have 140 million customers that obviously don't see the need for that.
Apple would have to make a 2nd model of iPhone for Verizon. Boohoo... all manufacturers do it. I remember when RIM made *identical* Blackberries for all 4 US carriers. They all do it.
lordmikeJul 3, 2010
Why is the MSM presuming this rumor is fact? One article from a couple of "unnamed sources" and everyone presumes it to be fact, even though no one has confirmed anything.
There are going to be a lot of disappointed people in January.
botsmokeJul 3, 2010
You're right, I trust you, Mr. Anonymous Source on the internet, much more than the anonymous sources quoted in the article on the internet. Can I quote you for my upcoming article?
qumahlinJul 3, 2010
Well considering both Apple and AT&T said their exclusivity agreement extends to the year 2012, that right there proves the article is wrong unless you're dumb enough to think they are going to voluntarily end the agreement early.

At first I was worried that I must have missed a previous Digg article on the whole Apple + Verizon deal.
...But, as others have pointed out - there seem to be some holes in this article...So I'm beginning to think that there is actually no such deal in progress.
qumahlinJul 3, 2010
There is no such deal in progress and if there is it won't be until 2012 when the Apple/ATT contract ends...this really isnt hard to understand people.
theuserdylanJul 3, 2010
At first I didn't believe this but then I realized that it makes perfect sense. Remember how AT&T let everyone who had bought the iPhone 3GS at launch upgrade early. When would those people have been eligible otherwise? In January...
AT&T just locked down a couple of million diehard iPhone users for two more years. Remember how they also raised the ETF? So if you want to try to get out of your contract with them in January it's going to cost you $250 or so pro-rated...
Can anyone think of another reason for letting 3GS owners upgrade early?
h4cklerJul 3, 2010
"Verizon may cure AIDs if it gets the iPhone."
"Verizon may create a moon that's not a moon but a space station if it gets the iPhone."
"Verizon may end world hunger if it gets the iPhone."

"Verizon may discover the god particle if it gets the iPhone."
All of these titles hold the same amount of substance as this article.

roguegeniusJul 4, 2010
I don't know if it's true or not, but I can say one thing: if the iPhone worked on Verizon, I would have one today. The one and only reason I don't have an iPhone right now is because I've chosen my company and don't want to be dictated to by a device. Apple needs to learn that their products are to serve me, I don't serve the products.
