pcmag.com— Twitter's EarlyBird account is definitely a step in the right direction in terms of ad and revenue strategy, but will it work?

Well it is about time Twitter tries to make money off their service.
It is a great service so I hope this works and that it helps them develop twitter to an even better platform.
I don't know if I think this idea will work as well as they hope, but just the fact that they are throwing ideas against the wall to see what sticks will mean that their income increases and hopefully the overall quality of twitter as well.
It's not a great service. It's just as annoyingly invasive as facebook... getting it's grubby little claws into anything and EVERYTHING. Follow Wheat Thins on twitter. Yea, I'm going to waste my f**king time following a GOD DAMN CRACKER on the internet. The sooner twitter dies, the more we can all get back to the way the internet was.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
Hehe, well that was a negative view.
You don't have to follow anyone if you don't like.
(I happen to like facebook as well but that's a different story)
But the fact is that twitter is easy to use, it keeps you in touch and lets you find new friends.
"Unlike a traditional ad network, this one starts with a viral network at its very core. An @earlybird tweet seen by one million followers could be retweeted by just one percent and be seen by an additional 10,000 Twitter users. That's assuming a 1X pass along. Surely, some really good deals will be retweeted 20, 30, or many more times. In other words, @earlybird is, potentially, a very powerful idea."
Not really. Ashton Kutcher Tweeted one of my videos when he had around 3 million followers. It only got 5-7k views from that, and that's from a celebrity that has a "niche" on what he Tweets. I doubt people will get anywhere close to that amount with @earlybird.
i thought it was just basically status updates.
i guess they could use that for contextual advertising but i didnt think they had a goldmine of data like facebook has e.g. age, sex, location, education level, spending habits?, etc
im guessing the bulk of their money is coming from selling verified business accounts or whatever they are called.
Google Reader > Twitter.
Just configure an RSS reader to get the feeds you like and there's no need for twitter. Heck, you can even subscribe to tweets via RSS.
excellent idea. future success will depend upon effectively segmenting their audience and delivering sufficient demographic information to sponsors. upshot for sponsors is potentially low resource investment for potentially high returns.
How does Twitter not make money? They are an extremely successful site, I doubt they aren't rolling in the dough. This @earlybird concept sounds interesting though - will be interesting to see where it takes the site.

@earlybird seems like a creative and unobtrusive way of generating advertising revenue, but I was expecting some kind of adwords style self serve contextual ad platform to emerge eventually...time will tell

I see no problems with the service.

Fun fact: They're profitable in Japan.
lookingdanielJul 9, 2010
Well that's cool.
Do you know what they are doing there?
Is it their sponsored tweets that make them money?
rpgmakrJul 9, 2010
I read the blog of one of their engineers in Japan: http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kirainet.com%2Ftwitter-en-japon%2F&sl=es&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8 the blog is originally written in spanish, it has an english version but I couldn't find the english version of this article. Apparently, twitter japan has featured ads from its inception. Still, that info is a little bit old and I don't know if it's still true today.

Stop them now! Next thing they'll start charging $1.40 to tweet a fully characterized tweet.

I hope they do. I wouldn't be upset if Twitter buried itself into obscurity.

Twitter HAS been making money... a lot of it.
You do realize they have licenses to sell their data, right?
hazmatsuitJul 8, 2010
So does Facebook, Myspace and Google. Yawn.
generalobviousJul 8, 2010
Gotta LOL at these articles that state "it's time to make REAL money" - as if that hasn't been going on for years :P
Hell, even MySpace is still profitable today.

Its Just the matter of time... Every one expecting this to happen....
philbertJul 8, 2010
The difficult thing here will be making ads cool enough that people will want to retweet them.
chang3Jul 8, 2010
Bitch, don't you wanna start makin' some real f**kin' money?
falserJul 8, 2010
It's baked in that they're eventually gonna charge to exceed the 140 character limit. Otherwise why wouldn't they have enabled it by now?
