Yet those businesses they are protecting feel the need to charge its consumers 5K for a product....

But it's on the internet, it must be true.

I think the biggest drain on the economy, besides income taxes (which take about 20%-30% of the paycheck of everyone I know, between Federal, State, SS, etc.) is our monthly bills. Gas, electric, water, cable, internet, cell phone.
People I know who have these services are paying:
Up to $150-$200 for Gas/Electric
Up to $120 for water
Up to $140 for cable
Up to $70 for internet (with all those fees and taxes)
Up to $350 for cell phone
Imagine how much more money people could spend if those bills were reduced.
marx2kJun 25, 2010
I can reduce it drastically for you in one month. Cancel cable, get the lowest tier broadband from the cheapest competitor in your market and get a pre-paid cell phone.
ruthlesspirateJun 25, 2010
Damn, they need to minimize, man. I'm paying about $120 for electric, $12 for water, and $25 for internet. I get some digital TV channels through a splitter because it's cable internet.
iforgotaboutitJun 26, 2010
1) Why do you have cable? The internet is better.
2) Damn, that's a lot for water.
3) Your cell service is pretty damn expensive too!

anonthepyroJun 25, 2010
Products like Maya and Photoshop can cost hundreds of dollars if I remember correctly. And with photoshop, a new version seems to come out every year. So that means even more money to spend. I'll rather just pirate it cause I don't have money to spend like that.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
insomniacagentJun 26, 2010
@Berkana
Adobe likely prices their software so expensively because of all of the pirates. I think the real money maker is all of the corporations and businesses who buy their products. They don't seem as perturbed by pirates as say, the RIAA.
docholiday22Jun 25, 2010
There is so much other s**t that needs to be sorted out and these guy are focusing on Pirates?
insomniacagentJun 26, 2010
See, as a teenager enrolled in a Calculus and Physics program, I don't have time to work a job for a salary. On an average night I have about 6 hours of homework. I simply can't afford to buy new games, music or movies. At 60 dollars a game (for new releases), it's just ridiculous. I can hardly afford the $15 dollars per month to pay for WoW.
That's what drives me to piracy.
And, for music, if I care about the artist, I'll buy their vinyl. As for smaller bands, I try to pay for their music. For the most part.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

torrangeJun 25, 2010
So, because the people want free movies and music, they are not represented? I knew I would find a bunch of people in here complaining because there will be a crackdown on stealing movies and music. Please justify to me your right to go into a site and download an album or movie for free - call it file sharing if you like, but it is still stealing.
Also, this article is a joke. Please tell me how this statement
Biden states, "Piracy hurts, it hurts our economy."
equals
According to the Obama administration, the RIAA, and MPAA, the world economy is pretty much doomed if we don't start prosecuting pirates at home and abroad. Without such a crackdown, businesses will go bankrupt the coalition argues.

Obama & Co. seem to be getting only the Cliff Notes version on the piracy issues. Like, all piracy is evil and deserving of drastic punishment. Well, yeah...counterfeit pirated prescription drugs can kill people and should be shown no mercy. Pirated songs and videos on the other hand have never killed anyone and extorting people who 'share' them for $2500 or so per incidence is just plain obscene.
aaroncharlesJun 25, 2010
Pirated drugs actually save millions of lives annually, especially in places in Africa where true humanitarians have taken to eschewing international law in order to provide a life saving service for people who would not otherwise be able to afford it. This, of course, does not profit the pharmaceutical companies, which is why there are constant PR campaigns against the practice

So, I agree that Government is immoral and doesn't work, but it definitely seems necessary.
mysql101Jun 25, 2010
Vote for a 3rd party candidate. It doesn't matter if you think it's a thrown away vote. The more the 3rd party support is shown, the more the republicans/democrats will have to take note.
This should especially be the case if you think you're voting for the lesser of two evils - then your vote can't be thrown away because you lose either way.
rhendalJun 25, 2010
Also, consider how many people don't want to throw away their vote on a 3rd party candidate. If they all stopped being pussies and voted for the person they actually wanted in office, they might see some results. Instead they're creating a downward spiral off of each other, or they're just lying about wanting to vote 3rd party in the first place.
mysql101Jun 25, 2010
Many people vote for who they THINK will win, instead of who they WANT to win. It's like some screwy mindf**k thought process. You do not get a prize for voting for the same guy 51% of the population also voted for.
rhendalJun 25, 2010
@mysql101: Yeah, I remember when I first turned 18 I could vote, and would hear stuff from my graduating high school class that was like, "Well, I want Candidate A to win, but Candidate B is probably going to win, so I'm going to vote for Candidate B."
I also hate the whole "A vote for a third party candidate is a vote for Candidate (that you probably don't like or want to win)." No, it's a vote for the third party candidate.
@secrity: That's an issue, too.
hydesJun 25, 2010
@njdoo7
a third party does not receive anywhere near the same kind of money from lobbyist and would therefore be less inclined to appease them, at least for the first term.
njdoo7Jun 25, 2010
@hydes
Good luck with that. I'll be waiting to abolish the state when you finally realize / learn.
kotiyaJun 25, 2010
@secrity - f**k it, I voted for Nader. I didn't agree with all of his agendas, but the man has spent his entire life in workaholic servitude to the American people, and has proven thus far to be incorruptible. That's way more than any of the politicians I have seen running for election. I was also pretty hopeful for Mike Gravel and Ron Paul... anyone who calls out the complete illegality of the income tax and the fact corporations do not pay nearly their fair share of taxes gets major props from me. A fourth branch of government more directly controlled by the people may actually work, and it may be f**king awesome if people actually researched their s**t and weren't brainwashed by propaganda.
The hilarious thing about Democrats (Michael Moore, wtf) begging Nader not to run against Bush because it would make Republicans get more votes, was that he received more conservative votes than liberal ones.
Until I feel Republicans or Democrats actually stand by their claims and earn their votes, I will always vote third party. One vote is essentially nothing, a letter to a public official is worth at least one hundred of them, but I'd rather feel better about working toward a better future than feeling like I was cheated out of a vote.
hydesJun 25, 2010
you mean the truth in that corporations run this country and there is nothing the people can do about short of a revolution? delaying the inevitable is better than accepting it and doing nothing, depending on the candidate it may not be just a delay he could actually inform the people of what is really going on in the government. will that happen? highly doubt it but that doesn't mean its not possible
njdoo7Jun 25, 2010
@hydes
You are rightfully upset about how the government operates. However, this is what you get when you have a government.

anarchy would not work simply because of human nature's desire to be in charge. that is why communism does not work. anarchy would lead to despotism which would end up far worse than what we are at now
njdoo7Jun 25, 2010
"anarchy would not work simply because of human nature's desire to be in charge."
Where did you learn this? Government..I mean public school? You claim you need a government to protect you from evil people. Who protects you from evil people in the government? Nobody does. Having a government is like giving a road map to these evil people, a road map of where to go and not face consequences for their actions.
You have no reason to be uneducated on anarchy, I provided a link where you can learn everything you need to know about it. Obviously, that did not happen.
njdoo7Jun 25, 2010
What do you need a government for then? What purpose does it serve?
You are completely wrong about Somalia. All proof for my argument as it pertains to Somalia can be found at these two links, parts 1 and 2 respectively:

"better the evil you know, then the evil you don't know"
You know of all the evils in government? Government's foundation is on evil, aka violence. The system I am suggesting is founded on the philosophy that violence is immoral. Why guarantee and centralize the existence and use of violence, which comes at the expense of freedom? This gets back to, what purpose do you think government serves?
kotiyaJun 25, 2010
A simpler way of thinking of it... as long as we've had government, we, as a race, have been searching out the best way to properly govern a large group of people, while encouraging values such as freedom, equality, success, and progress, while still asserting a certain superiority of ideas and power (which doesn't have to be militant). It's a civic evolution. Modern governments may be really close to the ideal, they just need some tweaking from the citizens.
hydesJun 25, 2010
@kotiya
finally a logical argument. while i agree with you on most of that, what politicians are doing is not treason
from the constitution: "Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort. No Person shall be convicted of Treason unless on the Testimony of two Witnesses to the same overt Act, or on Confession in open Court."
that being said, it is bribery and should not be acceptable. we need to remove these politicians at once and vote in those with no affiliation with the 2 primary parties
poesybeaterJun 26, 2010

kotiyaJun 25, 2010
If people weren't so crippled by fear then third parties would get a lot more support. It's going to happen, and hopefully soon. I think Bush was the breaking point. The candidate who won the next presidential term was the one who promised change. That's no accident, that's where people's minds are heading, especially with the younger generations who, thanks to advancements in communications, are more aware of what's going on and the stakes involved. They are finally sick of the bulls**t and I think within the next decade we are going to be seeing major third party influences.
Not to say it will really change anything, but it's a step in the right direction.

wilf_brimJun 25, 2010

drdragunJun 25, 2010
To argue it's totally one way or the other is ridiculous. Every pirated copy is not a lost sale, but probably 5% are. I have a friend at work who just yoinked Rome:Total War. Seriously, dude, it's 10 bucks on Steam and you have an engineer's salary. You are going to play that thing for 50 hours. trainofthought6Jun 25, 2010
evileddy - I'm the same way...it may have something to do with the more advanced DRM that comes with video games these days. If you want to get the full functionality out of a game, it's much easier to fork over the 10-20 bucks to Valve and play online legitimately. On the other hand, getting the full functionality out of a music or movie file is as simple as downloading it.
shinzenJun 25, 2010
Oh, gaming does have piracy problems, mostly with companies where their DRM "solutions" are really so terrible that you sometimes need to download a cracked version to PLAY THE GAME YOU PAID FOR without bugs, crashes, or random denials of service.

"It is sad but predictable to see John Prior (Letters, August 10) trotting out the old fallacy about music that we buy a product encumbered with a licence.
Let us walk through my most recent purchase. I strolled into the store, located the CD I was after, paid for it in cash and left. At no stage was I asked to sign a licensing agreement - not even a post-sale agreement like those for software. It was a simple transaction of cash for a physical product.
'No,' cries the music industry, 'you are bound by the licensing agreement that you did not sign and that we cannot produce for inspection.'
Fine - let's suppose I now have a licence for personal use applying to all the CDs I own. I should be able to take advantage of that. A CD I bought 10 years ago now has a scratch down the middle so that five of the 10 songs refuse to play. Luckily for me, this problem is solely with the physical medium. After all, my licence for personal use should allow me to reacquire 'my' content, especially since it is digital data and can be reproduced an unlimited number of times at virtually no cost.
'No,' cries the music industry, 'you bought a product, not a licence. You are not entitled to a free replacement, you need to buy it all over again. And when you do, you will be covered by another identical licence. Until something happens to this new physical medium.'"

Obama claimed to be against all of those things (at least for awhile). McCain did not. I knew he wouldn't follow through, given his action in the Senate, but without a third party on my state's ballot the guy who at least pays lip-service to reasonable policies was the best I could hope for.

Yeah, because SO MANY other politicians would make a stand for piracy and defend it.
People are f**king retarded. And I'm always glad to remind them just how retarded they are.
OK, so the 'obama' administration is against piracy.
WHAT? You mean as opposed to all of those other presidential administrations that would SUPPORT it?
Name ONE f**kING politician who would stand up and publicly even suggest that they support piracy.
Would never happen.
Ever.
But you guys are all whining and crying like there is some mystery candidate out there who would coddle you and tell you that what you're doing is OK and it's not stealing.
I hate to sound like a broken record but you people are seriously f**king morons. The most irrational people to ever peck at a keyboard.
Seriously...justify that flawed thinking for me.
Do you think that any politician from any party at any level higher than local government would ever go on record and say that they support piracy and file sharing?
THEN WHY THE f**k ARE YOU SHOCKED THAT THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION IS AGAINST IT?

"It's smash and grab, no different than a guy walking down Fifth Avenue and smashing the window at Tiffany's and reaching in and grabbing what's in the window." -VP Biden
1. Tiffany's doesn't attempt to sell infinite goods. If Tiffany's were in the business of selling say, pictures of jewelry, would me taking a picture of that picture be theft? Record companies don't sell bands, they sell data copies of a recording of those bands, those copies have no value, they are infinite. For this analogy to make sense, the record companies would have to be selling us concert tickets and/or private concert sessions with the band. Those are scarce goods (like jewelry).
2. You don't destroy property (break a window) or deprive the owner of a computer file of any of its value when you download a copy of it. In fact, the owner would not even be able to tell anything had happened. Like you do when you break a window and steal a physical good from someone else.

Let's say for a moment that I had a Star Trek Replicator.
With this magical device, which lets say almost everyone on Earth had access too, let's say I make a pizza, and then copy that pizza N times.
I keep the original pizza, and offer to sell you the copied pizza, despite the fact that it cost me literally nothing to produce, anyone on the planet could have made an equal or better copy than me for zero cost, and I am making Infinite profit on this, since any demand cannot equal the supply, I will never run out, and I have 0 cost to produce.
Now lets say you buy a pizza from me, and decide that you're just going to use one of the ubiquitous Replicators to copy it for zero cost, just as I was, and have some more every day. With this capability out there, what in the hell gives me the right to then scream at you, drag you before a judge, and charge you three thousand times the amount I sold that original pizza to your for per slice you copied or gave to someone else?
How is this difficult to understand? Financial Laws before the digital age were based on supply and demand, and having physical objects as the things being traded or sold. In that case, copyright law was invented so that someone couldn't invalidate all your work on creating physical goods which had a production cost, steal your methods, and undercut you by 15% thereby removing your entire market and leaving you sitting on your ass with 20 warehouses full of s**t you'll never sell.
What is happening now is a guy hitting Ctrl+C, then Ctrl+V and charging you $1.50 for it. And putting a bunch of restrictions preventing you from doing the same thing, even if you don't plan to sell it. That's not my idea of fair value.
manlyandyJun 25, 2010
The Star Trek replicator did not make food out of nothing. It works basically as a atomic resequencer. Like having a bucket of legos you can make anything with. Also, the Federation did not use money.
But regardless, saying there is no cost is not true. There are tons of costs that go into creating a band, making a song, signing to a label, recording, etc. It may take no money to copy a song, but that does not mean a song has zero cost.
This is not a judgement on what it Should cost or how the industry screws musicians or anything like that. I just want to make the point that it isn't truly free, which is why there are laws to tell you who gets paid for intellectual property
travelsonicJun 25, 2010
"Just because something is digital doesn't mean it doesn't have value and can be stolen. Piracy is stealing"
You just contradicted yourself, you can't say it can't be, then say it can be stolen.
Just by nature alone, your assertion is false - data does not submit to the same physical bounds as something that can be stolen.
Also, why is it that the two crimes [copyright infringement and theft] are in separate bodies of law, and one requires taking and depriving somebody of something while the other is infringing upon the right to control the distribution of a work? After all, according to you, they are the same.
"The record companies and the bands are getting ripped off every day."

Why don't we try and focus on the real problems at hand such as the housing market, banking, and the gulf shore?

I think Obama needs to install "national firewalls" so they can monitor and prosecute people from pirating, and also they can block access to pirate websites, and block bit torrent traffic. Like China. It's the only clear solution. The government needs to protect us from ourselves. /sarcasm Isn't it about time we stand up to these ****s****rs and tell them that we're their bosses? f**k you Obama and your administration, this is stuff the president of the united states should not even think about, there's 1000's of more important things than an outdated and obselete business failing, do you not know about the atrocious practices the riaa and mpaa have used against people?, innocent people?, even those with no home pc?, they deserve to crash and burn.

In a few years, when internet/broadband speeds are fast enough and reliable enough, we won't have digital "media" in blu-ray or CD formats. It'll ALL be streaming. Dreamin about streamin.
Then, it'll be strictly subscription. Digital distribution companies will get a piece of the subscription pie, and all content on the network will be free to download. Is this way too optimistic?
skyfyreJun 25, 2010
RIAA/Government: "We heard you singing "Sweet Home Alabama" in the shower this morning, and you did a pretty good job. That will be $1000 and a month in jail, please." *holds collective hand out*

I'd like to know where diggers draw the line. Say you have a company that makes a videogame, and you sell it in boxes in a store for $15 and this is your only channel of intended distrobution. Suddenly there are torrents and lime wire downloads of it all over the place.
Sure, not all the people playing would have bought the game, I get that. But a significant number would have. Who do we hold accountable? Surely filesharing in this way should be illegal.
As much as you may not like how a company chooses to distribute and price it's content dosn't give you the right to just take it from them for free. This is the primary reason I wont torrent things.
travelsonicJun 25, 2010
"Say you have a company that makes a videogame, and you sell it in boxes in a store for $15 and this is your only channel of intended distrobution. Suddenly there are torrents and lime wire downloads of it all over the place."
It is almost never that instantaneous.
"Sure, not all the people playing would have bought the game, I get that. But a significant number would have. Who do we hold accountable?"
The people distributing it, but the problem is that the methods used to find them ALWAYS take out the protocols themselves, and people unrelated to the one in question.
"Surely filesharing in this way should be illegal."
Depends, for example I feel no qualm if I buy a game, and then have to pirate it [w / crack] to make it run on my computer because of the overzealous DRM scheme on it.
"This is the primary reason I wont torrent things."
Because all torrenting == illegal & immoral. Right. /s
phatfiendJun 25, 2010
Sorry I should have been more clear. I used torrent as a slang there in the last sentence. I use bittorrent protocol often for non-infringing downloads. I meant "torrent" as in breaking copyright using bittorrent for distrobution.

Interestingly, the statements seem to fly in the face of a recent Government Accountability Office study released to U.S. Congress earlier this year, which concluded that there is virtually no evidence for the claimed million dollar losses by the entertainment industry. That study suggested that piracy could even benefit the economy.
