They need to make their money now before the next Social app comes along and takes over. Facebook has some strange quirks and I think it could be easily beaten by someone taking their ideas and expanding them. There are all these people racing to get 5000 friends (the limit), but what use are they, most people that accept random friend requests block them from their feed anyway. FB needs to make a lot of improvements before it becomes an essential business tool.

I don't know if they should cash out. I thought the same thing 3ish years ago when they were valued at like 200m. Clearly I was wrong.
I know, *know* they're not a 33b company. I don't know what their earnings are, but their P/E with that valuation is likely completely nuts. Their only monetizing is advertising and aside from Google, there's no advertising company worth that much.

How would you valuate something like Facebook though? There are over 500 million active users, and its reasonable in the foreseeable future that Facebook has something that will generate them a fair amount of income (think of places and all the businesses that would love to use that). Im naturally inclined to agree with you, though tech and internet fads are so unpredictable it could be a huge win or loss for people putting their money in it.

It makes Microsoft's deal a few years ago even better. They got ad exclusivity (which is what they paidthe most for....they did NOT value Facebook at $15 billion back then like many morons suggested) and got a tiny share that is now worth more than they paid.So they made a profit both ways.

Why am I getting "red arrowed" for this? Is it just because hte thought of Microsoft making a gret deal is so terrible to the average Digger? The fact of hte matter is, they paid $240 million three years ago...at the time, probably about $200 million was for ad exclusivity. $40 million was for that 1.6% share of Facebook. That 1.6% share is now worth over $500 million. So, even if you bought into that bulls**t that they paid the entire sum just for the stake (And that Facebook threw in the ad exclusivity for free out of hte goodness of their heart) they still doubled their investment. In reality, they saw more than a 1250% return on their investment in less than three years. AND kept Google away. Google, meanwhile paid out hunderds of millions of dolars for ad exclusivity on MySpace that brought then just tens of millions of dollars in revenue.
