Clothing in the United States is marked up ridiculously. I worked in retail when I was in high school, and we'd get shipments of s**t fabric in and turn around and sell it for 20 times what it was actually worth, all because they opted to put a brand on it.
I don't have a problem with people that want to be stylish, and I don't have any issues when rare fabric is sold for what it's worth - but 90% of the retail outlets in American Mall's sell ridiculously overpriced s**t, and suckers purchase it in order to feel like they're in the now.
Does anyone ever wonder why it is that something that was $50 ends up in the sales rack for $10 and the company can stay in business? Yeah, that's why. It was worth less than $10 before it even hit the rack.
ch3n3yth3d1ckAug 23, 2010
right, because marketing, advertising, paying your employees, leasing shop space, maintaining storefronts, leasing shop space and distributing catalogues costs no money
idiotComment is buried, click here to see the rest.
slipperyottterAug 23, 2010
i shouldn't even say this, but as you can see from the last few sentences he wrote, the item being marked up so high is worth less than ten dollars. that's why you can go to outlet malls like ross or whatever and buy the same s**t around ten dollars.
sure, there are expenses, like the one's you listed, but the outlet store has those as well.
here's what i recomend you do:
go down to hip store, like zumiez, urban outfitters, or w/e, and check the price tag on a tank top without any print on it. they're like 28-32 dollars...
it's true. i know cuz i've bought a few in my younger years (last year). but now im 20, and i see now how dumb i was.
nidstylesAug 23, 2010
Why pay for advertising when every piece of garbage clothing act's as advertising for you?
doublebaconsodaAug 23, 2010
Because malls charge rent and it isn't cheap to air condition a mall. But it is still a lot of bulls**t.

Since Apple has $40 billion in the bank and their retail employees wear American Apparel-made shirts, it wouldn't be outrageous for them to purchase AA to fuel their supplies. With an interest rate of only 0.76% on that cash mountain, this could be paid for in no time. Okay, maybe it is a bit outrageous.
plumheadAug 23, 2010
Actually, just 2 weeks ago Apple changed their store uniforms from American Apparel to some cheaper company that outsources to Vietnam... connection?
doublebaconsodaAug 23, 2010
It would be extremely suspicious if Apple turned around and bought the place because Apple knows what it is doing. They are waiting for s**t to fail so they can scoop it up and make money.
trolleyAug 23, 2010
A lot of their stuff is s**t, but their tshirts really are great. They feel like high quality and they fit great.
simonxborerAug 23, 2010
Worked for the company for a long time, in charge of inventory, got flown around to consult when they were setting up stores in Canada and the U.S. Wanted to say that the "sweatshop free" claims are mostly bogus - a fair amount of the stitching happens in the L.A. factory, but everything else happens in China under questionable circumstances. The stitching that DID happen in the states sucked - we had to return 10-20% of the clothes because they were already coming apart. Retail and inventory employees are treated like s**t. Minimum wage plus the creepiest possible corporate culture. The ability to "react to the market" also allows the stores to "react to coke-fueled terrible ideas" from all the many levels of unqualified quasi-models that Dov installed in the hierarchy without any regard to the business making any sense whatsoever.
That being said, I'm wearing one of their polos right now, 'cause they just fit.
snatchdraculaAug 24, 2010
This is sad and hilarious at the same time. Have to say I'm pretty bummed since their t-shirts, hoodies, and leggings are staples in my wardrobe.
wrc_michaelAug 23, 2010
Nice tees...terribad clothes. Tried to return an item with a receipt day after I bought it and they refused to give me any kind of refund even though CA law gives right to cash refunds for anything under $10.
With bad 70s clothes and crap service is it any surprise? Buh bye...good riddance!

iconmasterAug 23, 2010
I live in Texas and I find your statement curious. I find hot weather is the worst time to wear American Apparel tees, though they're comfortable otherwise.
Definitely not the shirts I go for when my body needs to "breathe."

Business rise and fall everyday in America. If you cant make a profit selling overpriced clothing than you need to be in another business.

Some of you people are f**king idiots.
This is literally one of the few companies that makes clothing (shirts, pants, socks, underwear, etc) IN the United States.
And for a while at least, they were making a lot. And selling a lot. AND exporting a lot.
And providing jobs in the process.
So the overweight, old, backwoods idiots and basement dwellers try to act like it's a death rattle for hipsters and that's all that matters to you? Like you introverted **** even leave your parents' basements enough to care.
They produced good quality clothing that was made in the United States and provided an option to those of us who CARE where garments are made and under what conditions.
I'll say it until I'm blue in the face: To the average Digger, a hipster is anyone who is socially active who leaves his house and isn't dressed in Docker's khakis and loafers. You people don't get culture at all.
It's fine to hate hipsters but quit using it as a buzzword or catchphrase to try to encompass every single person who doesn't fit into your sedentary, non-social lifestyle.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Did you not read the article? They were caught with 1,500 illegal immigrants working in L.A. and they are $120 million in debt.
If your a business and claim to not outsource and then you hire 1,500 illegals thats deceptive marketing. If you cant make a profit and cover your business expenses than you don't deserve to be in business. Learn about how to run a business before you start your brainwashed "buy american" rant.

It's sad that this company had to crash and burn like this. They used to make quality clothes that fit well, produced entirely in the U.S. Now they just make stupid lace leotards and tutus and decided that smart business practices are overrated.
kanuckpAug 23, 2010
Them saying their stuff's fabricated in the US is the equivalent to me saying my IKEA furniture is Canadian cause I constructed it in my house.
bloodwineAug 23, 2010
Made in America ... by illegal immigrants
blacksheep01Aug 23, 2010
I always had mixed feelings about that place. I am really glad it's made in the USA, but the owner is a huge perv and the kids who work in the stores around here are the most annoying hipsters I have ever seen in my entire life. I mean, Billy Ray Cyrus mullets and rat tails, Spring Break 87 T-Shirts, suspenders to spandex jeans and then they look at you like "hey normie, how sad are you wearing a T-Shirt and shorts, pffft" and they treat you poorly on top of that, just makes you never want to go in there again.
Maybe someone else can take up the mantle of made in the USA chain stores, again, I loved that part the most, but knowing about the owner and actually going in those stores made it a lot harder to love.

Conspiracy theory #329721387-1 They planted this article here to get more people to buy their clothes. Far fetched but I am sure some company has done that before but I doubt it. Just a thought, nothing more.
thermiteterraceAug 23, 2010
Hipsterism is essentially a 'cultural arms-race' where a bunch of insufferably annoying people relentlessly and constantly compete to one-up each other by means of their musical tastes or wardrobes. While they do have tons of their parents' money to spend, basing one's entire business plan on selling to people whose life motto is essentially "dude, I liked that before it was trendy...but not anymore" is kinda dumb.
