Everyone should boycott Digg on Monday.

FTA: "It takes a lot of points, however, to earn even a $5 gift card"
Really, what's the point.
alo81Aug 25, 2010
First reading this it seemed like a cool idea, I don't mind them knowing where I am if it means I can get free stuff, my location isn't that big a deal to me since I'm usually not doing any illegal s**t so that doesn't matter. Then I saw you need thousands of points just to get a $5 dollar gift card, so just for convenience sake, I wouldn't use this. Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

"my location isn't that big a deal to me since I'm usually not doing any illegal s**t so that doesn't matter"
I know this is a bit off-topic, but you're really missing the point of why this sort of thing is a bad idea. I too am a disgustingly vanilla person - don't even have a parking ticket on my record, so my background check is probably a fine candidate for insomnia cures. But my personal habits and my interests should NOT be up for sale to the highest bidder, regardless of the fact that the aforementioned habits and interests are legal and boring.
It just sets a tremendously bad precedent for privacy control - it's more or less innocent at this stage, but it doesn't take much to extrapolate how this could be used by the government to spy on its citizens. And yes, I know that "slippery slope" is actually a logical fallacy, but we've all seen how the last decade has unfolded with regards to citizen privacy. Do you really want to further erode our sense that we have a RIGHT to it, even if we mostly use that right for things as minor as hiding out MMO addiction from a potential boss?
All of that is quite aside from the fact that if someone knows where you *are,* they also know where you are *not* - so if (when?) this bad boy gets hacked, people will always know when you're away from home. Not such a great idea, when you think about it, especially if you're shopping at high-end stores or vacationing at high-end resorts.
halphpriceAug 25, 2010
interesting, about the where you are *not*.

Ahhhh! THAT old standby used by citches everywhere. "B-b-b-but! I SAY thatr in the future it will be expanded to be used for evil purposes! EVIL I tells ya!" Of course, bitches like you have made that prediction a million times and have been wrong a million times. But you still bich about it.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

Not useful for a lot of digg users, but heavy shoppers (even window shoppers) could benefit from this app.
Just stepping into participating stores 35 times (without buying anything) will earn you a $5 return. For someone like me, 35 store visits could take over a year, but I definitely have friends who like to hang out at the mall and could earn returns a lot faster. And of course if you regularly shop a store like American Eagle, why not do it? (Or if you're constantly going on mall trips on behalf of someone else who likes to shop...)
It's like credit card rewards. Some people don't use credit cards often enough to accrue rewards and some folks don't take steps to safeguard their privacy or identity. It can definitely be a hassle and there are obviously huge privacy concerns - but for some, this is a system that could benefit both sides of the cash register.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

HELL NAW! that means I have to get out of my house?
zizzybaloobahAug 25, 2010
The article says that unlike Foursquare, etc. the app will be able to detect when you are in the store vs. being near it. I really want to know how they plan to do that. Whenever I step into a building I lose my GPS signal, in most malls GPS will be useless. Sure there's cellular tower triangulation, but that isn't accurate enough to determine you're in a dressing room at The Gap.
shtev21Aug 26, 2010
From the article:
"The app knows someone is in a store by listening for an audio transmitter placed in each participating store; the phone’s microphone picks up the signal, which people cannot hear."
Presumably different tones can be used for different areas within the store.
johnwayne1Aug 26, 2010
I don't buy anything in a retail store. If it's not online, ebay or Costco, it's not in my house.
nutmacAug 26, 2010
I would use it if I can redeem points toward iTunes gift card. Many iPhone apps are cheap so even $1 for 1000-point would get me motivated.
fcrowAug 26, 2010
So we're all getting used to this new Digg then?
socialstacyAug 26, 2010
This app sounds kind of confusing on how you rake in points - seems like you have to do a lot of online shopping on your iPhone to get a $5 gift card, sounds like a lot of work :/
austinlocoAug 26, 2010
It's interesting but there are better ways of localizing. In interest of full disclosure, I'm the co-founder of an Austin startup that is developing tech that can be used to localize much more accurately within the store. This tech will enable app developers to provide 'true' location-based services instead of gimmicks.
