42% of average food budget on eating out?
This is probably true. Even in this "Great Recession" I've yet to see the local Friday's/Tuesday's/O'Charley's/Longhorn parking lots empty (or even thinned out) during business hours.
And the Price/Quality/Value proposition at these places (plus TAX and gratuity!) is just AWFUL.
BTW- And speaking of 'thinned-out', most of the customers are obese, in case you hadn't noticed.
. . .shakes head. . .

Why don't you try some wheat bread and stop being so preachy, MCEnrichedflour.

Entertainment: Stop seeing s**tty movies in the theater (which is usually every film at a megaplex)

Inception was good.

I was at a Walmart where a lady was using dollars to pay the bill. She was a dollar short and she went to her (age 5?) daughter and asked for a dollar real nicely. She just paused there and eventually I think the clerk just rung it up as paid.
I guess she "saved" a dollar? (How evil to use kids like this though.)
McScoliosisAug 9, 2010
lmao, I wouldn't be surprised if that was my mom and little sister.
I don't think they've ever had their bill considered paid, but my mom has gotten money from my sister to pay the cashier though. Usually because my sister wanted something to buy with her own money, but my mom ended up buying it and never got paid back.

Clearly you have never taken a Japanese Class, been to any social gather with anime involved, nor had to hang out around "hardcore" gamers for very long.
Or you're one of THEM. In which case, get some damn soap.

Short Answer: "don't buy it"
misscellaniaAug 9, 2010
This entire list is useless to me. I don't eat out. I don't pay for entertainment. I don't have health insurance and don't go to the doctor. I don't have money to invest. I already use the common sense tips that apply to me. I guess there is no way for me to save money!

Must have it for work -it's deductible.

If you make over 30K you will have to have health insurance soon.
misscellaniaAug 9, 2010
If I made over 30K, I'd BUY health insurance!

Not even a mention of leaving your bank for a credit union under the "Debt and banking" section. Want to see all your ATM fees vanish? Use a credit union instead of a bank.
bbqribsAug 9, 2010
This may vary. I have a credit union that charges more random fees than my BofA account. Their customer service is awful and I have to travel to a physical branch (1500 miles away) to close the account.

Five of those under health and insurance don't apply to if you live in Canada or England or other place with healthcare.
theworldisflatAug 9, 2010
Never ceases to amaze me how people will complain that they have no money while sipping on a 5$ coffee and talking about how much they spend eating out *every night*. Managing money is very simple if you aren't a complete f**ktard. In our society, f**ktards are what keep things moving though.... so party on f**ktards.
bbqribsAug 9, 2010
A lot of these are easy - if you're single. Wait until there's a significant other (and especially kids) in the picture. Things change dramatically.
I try to maintain the thermostat.. the wife changes it. I don't want to eat out, the wife does. There's a few others like that. Water bill? It's about the same each month, regardless of how we use the sprinklers.Cell phone bill? We don't use all of our minutes, but the text plans and data plans (that we both use) are pricey. :/
boner79Aug 9, 2010
Raise your hand if you claim to be broke yet have a data plan for your smart phone.

FTA: "1. Erase debt: The No. 1 way to spend less money on debt . . . is to get rid of it! "
Stopped reading after the first point as I can no longer take it seriously. I mean wow, just......wow.
markxpnsitAug 11, 2010
I totally agree that by skipping pre packaged and pre made food you save money... but you also get healthy!
