popcrunch.com — There's an improper division of wealth in America, with too much money going to a small few, and too little money going to the vast majority. Being a celebrity, your inclination is to keep things this way, as you're part of the small few. How do you do that? Human slavery.

While most of them are heart-breaking I'll need to digg deeper to confirm some of the aspects.

One celeb list you'd never want to find yourself on.
bobosmitorFeb 10, 2012
No kidding.
slmz00Feb 11, 2012
Ahhh Big DEAL!! Most of those companies have been on that list for as long as they've been around___ DECADES! Don't pretend to care now wearing your Nike shoes and your Tommy Jeans :O
What We would really benefit from as a society is to find a list of everyone who still follows or contributes to the KARDASHIANS and blow THEM to PIECES!!!!

Before you all start foaming at the mouth over this go here for a list of minimum wages for 171 countries. "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_minimum_wages_by_country" Australian minimum wage is is almost double that of the US and France is way ahead of us to along with Canada ! My mantra is if you care so much about how a company manufactures a product and you don't like it, don't buy it ! Put your money where your mouth is or shut up!
willmcneiceFeb 11, 2012
It would be nice to have some links so we can check these things out for ourselves. Where did you get all the info?
PresidentCamachoFeb 11, 2012
Agreed. Not saying none of this is going on but there is no credible info here. It is a good example of crap journalism. Unfortunately all you have to do here is say things like "All of the workers are threatening mass suicide if conditions don't improve" and everyone just believes it. This is likely because corporations are "EVIL" and everybody just "knows" this and just "knows" it must be true so the whole fact reporting thing becomes unnecessary.

"He lied and he enslaved. They’re now threatening a mass suicide if conditions don’t improve"
Just because some of this s**t happened does not make it not crap journalism, the article you reference is two years old. This is a recent article is it not? Are you saying they have been threatening mass suicide for two years now? HAHAHAHAH. I would not believe them either LOL.
And where is your proof where he "lied and enslaved?" or is it OK to mix bulls**t claims in with a bit of truth to make a political statement? And yes, Steve Jobs did not give a s**t. But you all support him. Nearly every environmental alarmist, OWS, human rights activist type I have met owns an iphone and apple products.
PresidentCamachoFeb 14, 2012
And I should have said "supported"
willmcneiceFeb 17, 2012
I don't think the article is two years old. According to the date it's from January 2012. Don't get me wrong, it's still crap journalism, but I think the facts on this one are inside the ballpark, somewhere.
PresidentCamachoFeb 19, 2012
oops my bad, but it doesn't really change anything and it has been going on for that long. Steve jobs is still dead so you can't throw him under the bus like they are and look!

bobbi21Feb 11, 2012
Trying not to be a dick like most of the ppl "defending" these companies but I must comment on the work hours. Most of these aren't very bad. In most asian countries any normal job is at minimum 60 hours a week. As a medical resident in the US I work 80 hours a week (and yeah it does suck). Its the incredibly poor and abusive working conditions which are the problem. The pay kinda sucks too but again, you have to realize the cost of living in these countries is much less so it's not as bad as it seems.
You know those charity commercials about a dollar a day and you can save the life of a child in africa. It's not like they have to pool together 100 ppl's dollars together to save 1 kid. A dollar does go a pretty long way.
For example. I'm from the philippines and you can eat a good dinner for $1.
http://www.routemarkr.com/cultures/food/philippines-filipino-street-food-meal-for-one-dollar.html
This place sells a skewer of fish balls for 2 US cents each although that does seem pretty cheap
http://www.wheninmanila.com/fish-balls-best-street-food-in-the-philippines/
Again if you're earning just a dollar a day that is still not enough to feed your family but its not insignificant. From a site trying to get rid of sweatshops they say the same. doubling the wages of these ppl would be equivalent to minimum wage in the US even though it'll still be just a couple bucks a day.
http://www.sweatfree.org/cost
I think the biggest mistake is ppl just being angry at it and forces these companies to shut down since they think a dollar a day isn't even worth working at so the companies shut down and the people starve to death or go into prostitution (which has happened). What would be best is to force these companies to have some decent business practices. Improve conditions, reduce work hours, increase pay. Double the pay
U_logic_error_broFeb 11, 2012
or they keep working until they are suicidal like at foxconn
bobbi21Feb 11, 2012
suicide rate at foxconn (at least that we know about) is far less than in any other job so it's really not related. Yes the working conditions suck but saying its so bad it leads to suicide would be like saying doctors have it worse than sweat shop workers cus they have higher suicide rates.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.

This article is nothing more than random accusations and pictures mashed together. I'm sure some of them are true, but at least get some friggin' citations!
tomgfromcanadaFeb 11, 2012
is it slave labor if they get paid
jboyd88Feb 12, 2012
I also have an issue with this wording. Some of those people/kids are thankful to be able to work and get paid for it so that they can pay for the most basic means of survival for them and their family, these people I would not consider slaves, at least not in the sense/context the site is conveying.
Unless of course the site is trying to convey a bigger meaning of how corporations and countries have suppressed other country's economies in order to be able to outsource cheap labor and manufacturing. I however doubt this is what the site was trying to convey but I still agree with its over all message.
tevediggsFeb 11, 2012
Children are one thing, but explain to me why I should feel sorry for prisoners working in harsh conditions? Their wages may be low, but don't forget they get free room and board! I'm getting tired of all these articles written from an elitist perspective, as if popcrunch cares any more than who they mention in the story. This has been a hot topic the past month, and this is simply a troll for page views.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
bobbi21Feb 11, 2012
I find it annoying that the tax payer pays for their room and board but the company makes all the profit. A little bribery goes a long way
b4noesisFeb 13, 2012
Room and board complimentary of non-prisoners' tax dollars. Nothing is free. Not one thing is actually free; except: natural resources which don't need particulate conversion for human consumption and have no verifiable chain-of-title or inherent rights claimed by other humans.
kiftoxFeb 11, 2012
yes, but that's why in spain we call them "young entrepreneurs"
b4noesisFeb 13, 2012
Define: improper division of wealth in America. Define: celebrity. Define: human slavery.
Unqualified statements may impact emotional appeal temporarily; however, opinion is not fact. People are fickle. Facts don't change. ..good luck with your appeal.
emendiolazaFeb 12, 2012
More should have been said about Steve Jobs. I had it with the encomium after his death, his company, through his marketing, exacerbated the illicit mining and trading of cobalt in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo; the atrocities committed to date are unconscionable. There is also the fact that China tightened its hold on the world's rare earth metals, vital materials for the igadgets; China has 95% market share of mining and refinement of rare earth elements, practically a monopoly. Thanks Steve
b4noesisFeb 13, 2012
Gee.. emendiolaza, encomium? Creating a threshold of responsibility from the compass of marketing is a thinly veiled excuse to thrash the legacy of someone who used their talent, skills and abilities to generate income. Illicit mining, trading of cobalt, atrocities committed, refinement of rare earth elements are independent of any one set of marketing skills. Blow off steam in the direction of the CEO authorizing those hated practices and prepare for a competent storm.

Is it bad if I don't have a problem with convicted fellons working for slave wages while serving their sentences?
drcrankFeb 11, 2012
The Tommy Hilfiger one is particularly creative.
blackjackjesterFeb 11, 2012
Welcome to the economy of the world, assh**e. Foxconn is one of THE biggest OEM's in the world, manufacturing most of the components you are using to reads this article with. Keyboards, motherboards, RAM, hard drives, optical drives, phones, tablets, etc.
Now, you seem to be gauging "slave labor" under the "they make less than the US minimum wage" - which for many of the poor countries, would be a kings ransom. For many of these people, that $1/day means food on the table every day for your family. It means shelter and a bed. Hell, Foxconn even gives it's employees TV's.
It may seem like "barbaric" conditions to us - but without these jobs, these people would be starving and unemployed most likely.
One more thing about Foxconn... The company employees nearly 1 million people. That's the entire population of Wyoming. They get 4 or 5 suicides? That's a smaller percent than doctors that commit suicide in the US.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
DiggPiggletFeb 11, 2012
"Slave Labor" equals money for for the poor in otherwise jobless countries. Eliminate these jobs and real people start to die. Pay them better? OK who else is paying them at all? Nobody! Not every worker makes $50K or better like spoiled Americans. Reality sucks for idealist.Comment is buried, click here to see the rest.
pinkfish411Feb 11, 2012
Reality is far more complicated that you make it out to be. One of the big problems is that some of these exploitive corporations radically alter the local economies and make them dependent on the corporation, often killing off any hope for self-sufficiency the community ever had by destroying its local industries and raping its natural resources. Not to mention the fact that some of the corporations exploit the lack of local legal protection by using thugs to intimidate workers, withholding pay, and exposing workers to dangerous conditions--and the workers can't fight back because they've come to depend on the corporation. And then, of course, when there's no longer any reason for the corporations to be there, they up and leave, sometimes leaving economic devastation in their wake.
Reality is rosy for those who bury their heads in the sand because they don't want to stop and think twice about the moral cost of their cheap consumer goods.
slmz00Feb 11, 2012
This could almost all (NOT ALL) be fixed with one simple law. Force corporations to adhere to Trade, Environment, and Labor Laws From the Country they get their income (sales) from. Even better, if they gain profit from many countries, force them acknowledge and utilize best practices. The whole world would benefit and slowly become equalized.
