Awesome! Sounds so nice, especially with gas prices here hovering around $3.75/gallon.

is the energy density the same as traditional fuel?
if so, $/gallon is kind of irrelevant
nerysJul 14, 2011
ding ding ding someone caught it.
COST PER GALLON IS IRRELEVANT. MILE PER GALLON IS IRRELEVANT.
whats relevant is COST PER MILE.
if I double the fuel economy but also double the cost of gas NOTHING CHANGES your paying the same "cost per mile"
in fact I lied its worse cause now you have to BUY A NEW CAR to keep the same cost per mile.
if you drop the price of fuel by 50% but get HALF the MPG's then your cost per mile is again UN CHANGED. except you have to buy a new car or a conversion TO GET IT.
so unless you already have a Very very cheap source of natural gas its likely not going to be viable.
from what I understand those who have natural gas in their homes and run CNG cars do so VERY VERY cheaply because they pay so much less for CNG than we do for gasoline.

If the price per mile of natural gas is the same as for gasoline, it's not irrelevant - at least the natural gas is sourced in the US. Furthermore, if the price per mile of natural gas were lower than for gasoline, people would switch to natural gas cars, raising demand for natural gas, lowering demand for gasoline, driving the prices back together.
Welcome to economics.

Natural gas fueling stations measure using GGE (Gas Gallon Equivalent: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gasoline_gallon_equivalent ).
Depending on where you live there are already quite a few filling stations. ( http://www.cngprices.com/ )
I own 2 natural gas vehicles and live in Utah where currently the state operated pumps are at $1.02 per gallon and the privately owned pumps are at $1.25 per gallon. I highly recommend switching to Natural Gas. I have saved thousands of dollars and staying clear of big oil is a big plus.

Energy density is already accounted for in $2/gallon figures: natural gas is so much cheaper because it is in such great supply.

FINALLY! lol
misteratozJul 14, 2011
Wait, before we get gas happy what is the energy density of natural gas? Is it as good as gasoline for the same amount of volume? In either case this is a welcome change.
