- digitalgopher, on 10/12/2007, -2/+52i think this is a step in the right direction. i'm totally for advertising on free, over the air radio, but if consumers are paying for radio, they should be entitled to commercial free content. After all, the fees are not only covering the access but also payments the service provider has to pay to the providers of the content.
- schlagzeuger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22clear channel sucks. they screw artists over big-time and employ mafia-like tactics to control radio and most live concert venues. good for XM!!
- slantyeyed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20this is a step BACK into the right direction . . . XM shouldn't have let CC into the fold in the first place, hopefully XM USA will take note.
- Stockwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Yay! Finally action against Clear Channel.
Drive CC into the ocean, so we can all enjoy decent live concerts again worldwide
The modus-operandi op Clear Channel is maffia-like.
World domination they seek, but they will get not. - 70ny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I agree that the music channels should be commercial free, but subscription fees haven't stopped commercials on cable or satellite TV.
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Here's hoping XM USA will adopt the same stance.
- roguepirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Thank you canada. Clear Channel is horrible and the the world will be better with less Kiis and a lot less Ryan Seacrest.
- serra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Good for Canada! I hope this happens here in the USA.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11subscription fees have always paid for delivery not content. advertisement is inevitable consequence of low subscribership. You cannot expect new content without ads. Its either rate hikes or more sponsors, and most will agree the later being a being the inevitabliity. Same reason people would rather watch online TV with ads than buy it off itunes.
- Scott802, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13How about a portable unit, which XM has?
That S50 is basically a tape recorder, you CAN NOT listen Sirius live on the go.
O&A Party Rock - damonic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Clear Channel is the reason I own an iPod.
- BloodJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10great move! screw CC!
- Mazz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Clear Channel owns stock and not enough to influence the company. 3.2% is the last reported stake I could find. Could someone with access to better data check that out? I would also be interested to know what % of XM is public to begin with.
- movieguyjon, on 04/03/2009, -1/+7Clear Channel can have all the free radio it wants. Let them have the free airwaves. It's not like any of us are actually listening to their content anyway. Although the real bummer is that a lot of people here in the midwest don't mind clear channel out here. In Grand Forks, ND, all we have are country stations and the top ten pop chart stations. Blegh...
Said all that to say this: good job, XM - mDot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Clear Channel is the radio mob. If you choose not to sell them your radio station or buy rights to Clear Channel artist (protection?), they simply don't allow artist to visit your studios or do promotional spots for you. Glad to see them getting dropped.
- BumRush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Clear Channel is actively ruining the minds of its listeners and destroying many principles this country holds dear. Now if only the FCC would follow XM Canada's lead :D, instead of promoting their local markets domination(just for one instance) and bland low brow broadcasts.
- hellmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Little know fact: Clear Channel is owned by the devil and their HQ is located inside a volcano.
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Bwa-hahahaha. (Cynical laugh.) Don't count on it in the United Corporations of America.
- Drood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's awesome! I'm wondering if the CRTC forced their hand. The regulatory body up here get MUCHO PISSY is any broadcasting group strays even slightly outside their mandate.
Clear Channel are evil. Don't let happen to pay radio what happened to pay tv. "Oh, the channel costs you $X a month, but it's commercial free." Remember when channels you paid for actually WERE commercial free? The only commercial free channels I have on my 50 or so here are the two PBS stations I get, and Family. And I'm paying $50 a month... - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8So Sweden or Canada.... where do I want to relocate to more...
- Drood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Only one I know is DirecTV. They charge like they would anyone else, and "ignore" the fact that you're in Canada. There was a big legal battle a few years ago, and while it's not exactly legal, you can't be prosecuted for owning one as far as I'm aware.
Lot of folk want HBO etc... HBO have tried to move into Canada, but the stations that currently air HBO content have blocked it and, the CRTC being the cable industries bitch, went along with it, so the only way to get HBO, Showtime etc... Up here is to buy a DirecTV system or similar. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5That happened because consumers let it happen; here's hoping the same won't be the case for satellite radio.
- spira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They want to take the same stance, but ClearChannel has a contract from 1998 with XM's U.S. unit and took XM to court to force XM to air commercials on those channels
- NewNole2001, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7simplesimon, express yourself clearly without expletives next time.
- NoThnMoreAB, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11XM is great! I have it in several cars and greatly enjoy it. I've listened to Sirius, but just didn't get the same experience. I don't like the sirius hardware either... and hey, one more thing to piss of a bunch of people...... STERN SUCKS! hahahahaha. you have to admit that his sirius show is no different than his radio show. it's lame. just give me some Squizz and XMLM (back on the air on Monday) and i'll be happy! Biatch!
- Mazz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Sirius does not have zero commercials. Both companies kind of lie about that. Sirius has a lot more mainstream like content. If all you want is music, You can pick ether. XM has better equipment and coverage, you can compare them at Best Buy.
People with Sirius tend to pretend the signal doesn't drop out.
Howard is over by the way. Imus all the way... - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ya, just visit Canada and buy an XM receiver. Canadian's have been buying American receivers for years. Although, I'm not sure how the subscription payments work.
- supert0ad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it was buried because while you had a good point, you expressed it in the worst manner possible. also there's a link at the bottom of your post that looks suspiciously like spamming
edit: oops. olon you beat me to it - Mazz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I didn't bury it. It happens sometimes.
- monzsca, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Clear Channel is the reason I have XM (ok and an iPod too).
- krux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yea, you get the canadian channels on your US XM receiver.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Screw moving to Canada, can I just get their radio stations?
- filovirus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4RAAAAMONE, bring MORE pests to digg!!!!!!!
- olon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Your comment wasn't buried because of the expletives, but because you advertised your site in your comment.
- xst4t1kx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Good to read and good for them.
- hckynck20, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sirius better? XM has more channels and MORE commercial free channels even after clear channel than the doggy
- steger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ramone, bring me commercial free music.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6So what? Who didn't see advertising on subscription radio services coming a mile away? You guys ever heard of cable television?
- skellener, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Time to break up the monopoly known as Clear Channel.
- hansonc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3or XM will just look at the 25 songs clear channel is playing in a loop and do the same for replacement channels.
I have no idea what Clear Channels listenership has to do with XMs.... - Mazz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@swazo
XM 52 - Unsigned
XM 53 - Fungus
XM 74 - Bluesville (best bluesmix anywhere)
need I say XM 202 - R+F Party Rock - krux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree with you there. The reason I got XM was that their music channels have a really diverse play list, and don't just play the same over played crap. I never really listen to any of the clear channel owned channels, since they just don't have the same quality there.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Canada.... Calgary in fact
we've got the flames.... and the red mile (its like marti gras out here) GO CANADA - bennyb1anco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6The little doggy company blows!!!
- vastly inferior equipment. Compare the http://www.xmradio.com/inno/ with the piece of garbage that Sirius puts out.
- exclusive contracts for sports that no one would want to listen to on the radio anyway,
- Half a billion spent on a washed up, hypocritical scumbag who can do very little beyond B-List celebrity cockstroking and interviewing strippers - krux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I noticed XM segmented off the clear channel content into it's own category. good move there.
- adnauseam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2For all you XM lovers...it wont be around much longer, love it while you have it. if you call XM to cancel right now they will offer you a $3 /month deal because they don't want you to leave, they will sometimes lie about losing content (like NASCAR it will be leaving for Sirius after the end of its XM contract) to keep you from quitting. The simple fact is Sirius has commercial free MUSIC...yes the talk stations and premium content have some (very little, try 3 minutes an hour compared to terrestrial 20 minutes per hour) commercial content but its not just for money. Talk show hosts started discovering they had no time to go to the bathroom or prepare news or bits with out SOME kind of break every once in awhile. Sirius is working on a wireless receiver, the difference is that they wont release it till it is really good. Have you used the wireless XM product?...here's a hint...it sucks. Drop outs and bad sound galore. Not to mention the content (if you are interested in content) is actually backed up with enthusiasm and hard work on Sirius. Remember all those promotions from XM about famous people and their stations like snoop dog and now Oprah. Funny how you don't actually hear those celebs on the stations. The few celebs at Sirius actually come in, sit down behind a mike and and WORK. keep me posted when that happens at XM, i wont hold my breath. And as for Stern...well he is about to become the "emperor of all media" if that's possible. Howard has 2 channels, one for his show and repeats and one for entirely new content and other interesting/funny broadcasters who have been kicked off the "free" airwaves like him. They have also added the On Demand - Howard TV channels through Comcast and Cablevision...you can get every show, specials like comedy roasts, movies, live bands from the show, etc...all at your finger tips. Howard has his own news team now for christsake! Imagine a news team that can report with no bias (F you FOX network) and not worrying about being politically correct, it brings a tear to my eye. Now they have a listener independent movie competition and they will be showcasing in a theater and on ON Demand. Now walk into a Best Buy and tell me which companies product displays you see. A tower of XM boxes and the Sirius radios fly off the shelves. The CEO of XM quit cause he thinks the company is overextending itself trying to beat Sirius. And let's not forget that the three Satellites in geosyncronous orbit beat XM's two Satellite notoriously poor broadcasting coverage. Mark my words XM will die a slow painful death.
- cockmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sirius is the one with the problems. The cost per new user is WAY higher than what XM spends, and they are now realizing stern isn't bringing the subscribers he promised - not even close. Oh right, XM is still way in the lead. Also, O&A party rock.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Good, one of the major perks of satellite radio is that you hear good artist, not artist that promise to let Clear Channel sponsor their tours.
- MilitantRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That whole "threaten to cancel XM and they'll give you a $3 rate" thing is a lie. That was a planted call. Howard is a liar and is desperately trying to keep the illusion going.
- despr8t, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2BTW...its Kibosh
