- wilwheaton, on 10/31/2007, -6/+53Well, *****. If I'd known this was going to get submitted to Digg, I would have given my story a more interesting title, like . . . uhm . . . oh! I know: 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0.
- wilwheaton, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45@gimmiegimmienow: Let me clarify something, okay? I never said your revolt was idiotic. I'd love for you to produce a link that backs that up.
Not that I owe you an explanation or anything, but since a lie can get around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes . . .
What I *did* say was that Kevin and Jay, (who are friends of mine, by the way, and who shouldn't be surprised to hear any of this from me) have never done *anything* to dissuade the Digg Mob from spamming, tormenting, harassing, or attacking various sites and site owners who are linked by Digg. I've begged them personally to do something, anything, with the massive power they have via this website.
I've begged them both to make some sort of statement encouraging Digg users to be responsible and respectful to the Internet as a whole, and they've always been content to just take a hands off position instead. Even though I strongly disagree with the way they've kept silent when blogs and forums have been effectively shut down by an angry and unaccountable invasion from the Digg Mob (or Digg Mafia, or Digg Kiddies, or whatever you want to call them. We all know who I'm talking about), it's their prerogative because Digg is their baby and their business.
Digg is the biggest social site on the Internet, and can (and does) have an enormous impact on the websites that make the front page. Kevin is the leader of Digg, or at least the public face of Digg, and I personally think he should speak up and tell the Mob to grow up a little bit. By his silence, I think it reflects poorly on Digg's users, Digg's management, and Digg itself.
But look at what happened yesterday. The supposedly democratic community here, which is solely responsible for the billions of dollars Digg is supposedly worth and without whom Digg is nothing, decides that they're pissed about users being banned and content being removed. They pretty emphatically express that anger in *exactly* the same way the Digg Mob has done to Dugg sites in the past. Suddenly, now that the Digg Mob has turned on Digg, everyone in Digg management is really interested in getting the Mob to settle down. It's great that they finally spoke up this way, but it should have happened months ago, when the Digg Mob was running rampant all over the place, trashing blogs and forums like crazy.
If you're going to attack me, at least get your facts straight, okay? I'm sure there's plenty of stuff you can digg (ha!) up to get pissed about. Here, I'll even give you a place to start: I didn't stop participating in Digg culture because someone buried a story I put in the wrong category. Believe it or not, I have more important things to do than obsess about petty ***** like that. I stopped participating in Digg culture because I got tired of dealing with the Digg Mob and its maturity level of unsupervised, over-caffeinated 12 year-olds. I spend my time with the grown ups at Reddit and Netscape (Where I'm a Navigator, for the sake of full disclosure.)
So now that we're done with this, can we get back to the issue at hand? Because the HDDVD story and the Internet Radio story are much more important than any of this crap. - mklopez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@chi1thook:
The article is written by a fan of internet radio, probably like you and all others that digg up the link.
The issue of the RIAA trying to kill music streaming services is as much deserving of Digg's community support as the HD-DVD crack issue. If I ever found another article as well-written as this one, but posted on a site like, I don know, killapuppy.com, and authored by some "NaziLover666", I would still submit it to digg. Let the digg/bury process take care of it. - zetec, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14WWFTW.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Thumbs up for you, Wil. Tell it like it is. The rampage that went on here yesterday was completely worthless, and yes, I'll say it: all of those people spamming Digg were idiots.
I did my part to help though. I marked every single 09 story that hit the site as spam. I tried. I think that I was not alone in this, as I noticed a lot of stories on the upcoming pages staying there after they got marked as spam early on. Saw a lot of idiots complaining about censorship because 40+ digg stories were staying in upcoming. Probably because they were spam.
That said, the site crashed and I gave up. The next day after Kevin caved, I kinda lost interest in Digg myself. It's clear that the idiots run the show around here, and that anybody interested in *serious* things should go elsewhere.
Face facts: You idiots crashed a site because you were told not to post nonsensical hexadecimal all over it.
Yeah, you're so ***** oppressed by "the man". Morons. - coit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If Wil is still around, I'd be curious to know why he blogs on the suicidegirls site. Why not a higher profile, less pornographic one?
just askin', kay? - CharSkall, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11We are Digg.
09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0 is irrelevant.
You will be assimilated. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's the 'you owe RIAA even if you don't play anything RIAA has rights to' law that really sticks in the craw.
Does this new bill include any provision for removing that bit of RIAA's mafia tactics? If it doesn't, it's still not good enough. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6We're going to have a world controlled by corporate interests. The thing about corporations becoming the ruling class is that they're constitutionally-exempt. Sure, congress can make no law restricting the freedom of speech or the press, but that doesn't stop your boss from legally restricting you from saying certain things about the company, or from barring the press from company property. Already we have the RIAA forming their own police force that performs raids on "pirates" and "thieves." They're not bound by the constitution. They don't have to read you your rights when they take you away, guns blazing. What's next? Is the government going to let the music industry imprison people without trial or charge? Will we really have RIAA prisons?
We not only have to separate the church from the state, but the corporate interest as well. All forms of lobbying should be illegal. There is nothing noble about trying to influence a congressman's vote to your favor. - Ingersoll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The so called revolt is probably going to be the phase change that pushes Digg over the edge.
What that particular edge turns out to be remains to be seen. Will it in fact be a growing pain or just a new level of noise to add to the din? In the long run I think it's a good thing because either way it signals a change in Digg, and not just the mechanics or the process, but a more fundamental change in the user base itself. Whether that turns out for good or ill, only time will tell. Wil raises a good point though. Wouldn't it be nice to see that level of passion and social activism harnessed for things that matter on the net and in society at large? - wilwheaton, on 11/14/2007, -2/+5Maybe if you have the maturity level of an over-caffeinated 12 year-old, sure.
However, over here in grown-up land where I live and work and raise my kids, I don't steal things. Ever. Can I prove it? Of course not, but I know what my values are, and I believe that stealing is wrong.
I love this music, so I'll support the people who made it, by talking about it, buying the CDs, playing them for my friends, and maybe even attending a concert.
On topic: I _could_ create an online radio station, fill it with songs that I love, and play a weekly show of stuff I hope other people will like and buy, as well. But if the CRB ruling, at the urging of the RIAA, is not overturned, this very valuable method of publicity will be taken away from a whole bunch of bands. I personally think that's really stupid, and hope that HR 2060 is passed. - cid2001, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Bravo Wil.
- jgarra23, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Flame on... (this is not one but rather an observation of the truth) Wil Wheaton once again takes a valid premise & interjects it with lauhable and shallow loic... ugh...
Arg, the epitome of Gen X/Y self-centeredness and shortsightedness almost always makes the arguments seem worthless and trivial at best. - coit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Kiss butt much? :-)
- mklopez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So how will it help if I call Nancy Pelosi? Should I tell her to register in last.fm or pandora?
- theorydigital, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Hey Will, nice job on the article! I try to hit your blogg up every once in a while. I met you a few times where I grew up in La Canada. Hope things are good? Take care,...
Scott - JDWTC, on 11/14/2007, -11/+5Do not let wil wheaton spam make the front page. There is enough blog spam already.
- BigSlacker, on 11/14/2007, -6/+0"However, based on hearing these songs, I plan to buy both these albums now, because I really, really liked them. The Shins and The Arcade Fire just made sales, earned themselves another unpaid marketer, and probably sold at least two concert tickets, all because I heard them on the Internet"
Yea...right...now to the real world. "I plan to rip off those songs, cut my own CD or stick it in my MP3 player, and those bands will never see a penny." People have never shown a willingness to pay for what they don't have to. - qevlhma93, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1202-225-0100
- chi1thook, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4If I were interested I would read and listen to novices in the field like DJ's, program directors and talk show host. How exactly Wesley Crusher an authority on radio programming.
- chi1thook, on 11/14/2007, -25/+7When I grow up I want to be Will Wheaton. A fame whore who blew his child star fortune on hookers and drugs.
- gimmegimmenow, on 10/12/2007, -30/+6Really Wil? I find it amusing because you sure found yesterday's revolt on digg idiotic, even dissing digg users.
You only like digg as it benefits you, as in your fame.

Ever since a story of yours got buried because it was in the wrong topic, you were upset and called digg childish even though it was explained as to why your story was buried. You didn't return for awhile, after that now when you do, it's mostly to digg stories about yourself. Talk about being a fame whore
You care about digg? Yeah right! Especially after reading your comments at suicidegirls, known for its extreme censorship.

What is Digg?
