- nick2525, on 11/13/2009, -11/+271There is nothing quite like the journey a good 15-20min epic song takes you on. I live for these. Solo's should be long and spectacular, time signatures should change frequently and the chorus should sound a bit different every time. This is how to write a song. One thing you can say for sure is that prog rockers are not concerned about making radio play lists. It's about being as creative as possible, composing a masterpiece.
If you are on a long car ride somewhere and you want to go on a journey of sound, I recommend putting some of these songs on your ipod (you may need a bigger HD though):
DREAM THEATER: A Change Of Seasons - Octavarium - In The Presence Of Enemies Pt. 2 - Stream Of Consciousness, etc.
OPETH: The Baying Of The Hounds - Master's Apprentices - The Grand Conjuration - Face of Melinda, etc.
BLIND GUARDIAN: And Then There Was Silence. - garths, on 11/13/2009, -1/+108The writers tried their best to make prog rock sound silly, but then I played the Hocus Pocus embedded video, and all I could think was that this stuff rocked, even with the yodelling.
- greggerm, on 11/13/2009, -3/+100Porcupine Tree. 'nuff said.
- thewhits, on 11/13/2009, -0/+93As a drummer I do listen to a lot of "progressive rock" simply because there are tons of great drummers: Porcupine Tree's Gavin Harrison, Rush's Neal Peart, Mike Portnoy for Dream Theater, Danny Carey with Tool...etc.
But I do see how a lot of it can be weird and challenging though.
Either way Nickleback is the worst band of all time, and it's not even close. - funkedup, on 11/13/2009, -2/+94Liquid Tension Experiment...nuff said.
- EnTaroTassadar, on 11/13/2009, -1/+88Cracked knows how to do background banner advertisements. We need boobs in tight t-shirts, not some poorly-rendered dragon thing and some dude with cornrows.
Cracked ads > Digg ads - burningrobot, on 11/13/2009, -0/+762112!
- punkideas, on 11/13/2009, -0/+75Dugg for yodeling solo video
- merreborn, on 11/13/2009, -0/+73The writer's obviously a fan, who knows how to make fun of the things he likes.
- noPCtoday, on 11/13/2009, -7/+79TOOL is progressive rock, and they are ***** awesome.
(so is APC) - AdmiralAcbar, on 11/13/2009, -1/+60Pfft, only 15 minutes?
- jerfoo, on 11/13/2009, -1/+58Buried for not mentioning RUSH.
WAIT...WHAT?! They DID mention RUSH?! Sorry, must have been force of habit. - quakeIII, on 11/13/2009, -0/+55I was under the impression that Rush is a moderately famous band in general and Canada's favorite band (I'm not Canadian so I can be completely wrong). But it's not like there's no interest in prog rock.
- givemesnow, on 11/13/2009, -0/+46Dream Theater is thrash metal...?? Hmmmmm
- NOZZLeS, on 11/13/2009, -0/+46Dugg for OPETH!
- MuseMike, on 11/13/2009, -1/+44Now I wouldn’t call Tool a progressive band but songs like Lateralus and patient really make you feel that you are on an epic journey. Especially Lateralus from starting slowly to ending with a bang. Just my two cents.
- xenuxenuts, on 11/13/2009, -0/+43nickleback fan, eh?
- bds369, on 11/13/2009, -6/+48Dream Theater is Progressve METAL. There is a ***** difference.
- BigE89, on 11/13/2009, -2/+42Dugg for RUSH!
- Eupatorus, on 11/13/2009, -3/+41Tool is most definitely progressive. I mean, King Crimson is one of their biggest influences.
- drunkenalfred, on 11/13/2009, -4/+41Dugg for The Mars Volta!
Omar is a god among men. - Hindukid, on 11/13/2009, -1/+31If you're into the progressive metal scene (or are curious about progressive metal) I'd recommend any song by Between the Buried and Me. But if I'd have to choose listen to Selkies: The Endless Obsession, White Walls, and Swim to the Moon. All amazing songs.
- fquednau, on 11/13/2009, -0/+29Yes, best example of DEGRESSIVE ROCK!
- nick2525, on 11/13/2009, -2/+31They have some thrashy riffs sometimes. But putting that band into a single genre is always going to make someone sound stupid.
- tamman2000, on 11/13/2009, -1/+28tool is prog
APC, while also good, is not really prog... - ileftfark, on 11/13/2009, -0/+24Dugg for Rush.
- NaturalCauzes, on 11/13/2009, -0/+24It's music to listen to in your speed suit when you need scientific inspiration.
- givemesnow, on 11/13/2009, -0/+21You know, for the vast majority of people music is a hell of a lot more than that. I feel sorry for you.
- nick2525, on 11/13/2009, -0/+21EVACUATE PLANET EARTH BEFORE IT IS......RECYCLED!
- BigE89, on 11/13/2009, -0/+20Rush is amazing live!
- scuba7183, on 11/13/2009, -0/+20Hocus Pocus by Focus
- Pseudo99, on 11/13/2009, -2/+21always relevant
- tamman2000, on 11/13/2009, -1/+20While some don't consider it prog, you need Aenema by tool on there.
Also, I noticed you don't seem to have any old school prog on there what about the 2112 overture by rush? - EskNerd, on 11/13/2009, -0/+19After being a lifelong fan of several prog rock bands (Floyd, ELP, Rush), and a closeted Dream Theater fan, I was recently turned on to "In the Court of the Crimson King". It's amazing.
- Johnnyjm, on 11/13/2009, -0/+19***** yeah, King Crimson!
- petejk, on 11/13/2009, -0/+19Porcupine Tree, Sky Moves Sideways, Phase 1-2, ~ 35 min...
(Saw them live about a month ago. They played their latest album - the Incident - from track 1 to last "nonstop". After that they did a normal gig...) - Llanowar, on 11/13/2009, -1/+20Porcupine Tree <3
- kornwin, on 11/14/2009, -1/+19CREED SUCKS!
Scott Stapp style:
CREED SUCKS! YEEEEEEEEAAHHHHH! - Eupatorus, on 11/13/2009, -0/+18Wow. An he uses WMP too.
- ileftfark, on 11/13/2009, -1/+18You must be rockin' Limewire 24/7!
- nick2525, on 11/13/2009, -0/+17BTBAM - Colors album was going to be the next on my list but I didn't want to make it too long. Incredible album!
- goblinjack, on 11/13/2009, -0/+16Article needed more Genesis. They were always years ahead of their time, even when they went pop in '81ish.
- BoneheadFarker, on 11/14/2009, -1/+17Tool is modern progressive rock, which is characterised by a distinct lack of pants.
- nick2525, on 11/13/2009, -6/+22I wouldn't call Tool progressive either. They seem more "inspired" by progressive rock, rather then actually being in the genre. Great band though.
- TheR3dMenace, on 11/13/2009, -0/+16Specifically with an emphasis on virtuosity
- ElysianGold, on 11/13/2009, -1/+17How can you mention Opeth and not list their longest song "Black Rose Immortal" clocking in at 20 minutes? Also, Porcupine Tree's "Anesthetize" is a freaking epic 17 minute track.
- nick2525, on 11/13/2009, -4/+20Metal is also a form of Rock...it still counts.
- CraigHwk, on 11/13/2009, -0/+16Maxim spy.
- Devine13, on 11/14/2009, -0/+16since when does Rush have a place in that list?!
Rush is ***** awesome. -
