for real I will not stop illegaling downloading music untill they make it so when i pay for it i can do whatever the ***** i want to do with it without having to burn it and rip it back to the computer.
2 if they do manage to susceed in shutting down alot of p2p networks i will make a killer in cd profit at school since they wont beable to shutdown underground networks and 99% of the people at my school still think kazaa is tight. - Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5how about we just stick to downloading and make them go out of business
- x2dx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think we can all agree that the RIAA is out of control.
There like the serial killers of sueing. - jsheldon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you don't like what their doing, you can contact Warner/Chappell here:
http://www.warnerchappell.com/wcm_2/contactus_2.jsp?menu_status=about
Here is the info:
Warner/Chappell Music, Inc.
10585 Santa Monica Boulevard
Los Angeles, Ca 90025-4950
phone: 310-441-8600
fax: 310-470-1587
The only contact info for the RIAA is their email: webmaster@riaa.com. I'm not advocating any illegal hacks, messages, or phone calls, but it's time they hear from the people who keep them in business. No company can stay in business if their only revenue is from lawsuits. - vdub12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Theonion.com is a parody news site.
Its not true I at least hope you didn't think it was true. - nocre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is absurd. Either listen to non-RIAA artists or pirate on.
All due apologies to the RIAA artists, but you stand quietly while your pimp sues your grandmother, therefore I can no longer support you.
But seriously. Attacking lyrics sites, now? My ***** christ. - spikebuddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2well...the morons will eventually seal their own fate. What a bunch of bozos.
- hochy0lora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i get the feeling we all hate riaa
- saichele, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dear RIAA,
go ***** yourselves with steel pipes.
sincerely,
a longtime former customer. - shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, let's sue our fans.
You know, the ones that give is MONEY. - mrpinto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This site will tell you if a CD is released by an RIAA member.
http://www.magnetbox.com/riaa/search.asp
If you see a warning and you buy the CD anyway, you are part of the problem.
If you see no warning and buy the CD, you are part of the solution.
~p - ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How many bullets can one foot take?
- covrigel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1funny thing, RIAA is stabbing themselves in the back right now. They're the ones loosing customers
- CptnObvious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The RIAA took my music away....and my lyrics
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Posting lyrics on the web is different than posting a tom clancy novel on the web. The average person does not go around purchasing lyrics sheets for songs they want to read. The main format you are purchasing is the audio, the lyrics are just a trasnscription of that audio. With books the main medium is the text, and the Audio Book version is read from it. Both start as text and become audio, but selling lyrics sheets can't really be compared on the level with publishing novels.
- Fantt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the reason they're doing all the suing is that under US law if you can't show that you have vigorously defended your copyright, you can lose it. This nonsense will continue until several bands have hits totally outside of the RIAA labels. Until then, expect more of this.
- spotty, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3good, theres soooo many of these lyrics sites out there and 3/4 of them ARE spyware/adware propagating cespools
- Abatrour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the RIAA is doing this just for control, so the labels can tell the artists that they are nothing without them. Think about it. If they get away with making it illegal to talk about new awesome songs they came across, posting lyrics or playing a few songs with friends in a coffee shop or in your living room then the only way of spreading the word (advertising) is through means authorized by the labels themselves which is pretty much trying to trick the artists into thinking that if you want to make it big you need a greedy label and that selling your own music from your own band website is a bad idea and "illegal"? Seriously, all bands should go independent.
- nocre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The lyric sites can simply invest in independent, non-RIAA artists whom don't mind having their lyrics read by their fans. Music sites can devote their time to assisting these artists in getting their stuff heard.
I see no problem with it. If RIAA doesn't want its product on the internet then let's stop putting its product on the internet. Let's stop buying the CDs and going to the concert of RIAA-bound musicians. Perhaps they'll abandon this pointless middle man and get back in touch with their own respective consumer base. - diggerphelps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lyrics are not the domain of the RIAA. recordings are.
This falls under the purview of the song PUBLISHERS associations, ASCAP and BMI.
Warner/Chappell is technically NOT Warner Bros records, although they are under the same corporate parent.
Song lyrics are copyrighted. That's why it is illegal to post them on the Internet w/o permission.
I'm not saying this is right or wrong -- just the way it is.
Clearly, though, it is a new age, and the old ways of doing business are not going to fly. The old media cartels are fighting progress, but they are going to eventually die like the dinosaurs they are. - froGGer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Chill out. Just a new business model. Since the product is pretty dismal these days, they need to turn to other sources of revenue. In their shoes, I'd try to float the idea of an 'artistic' tax on the general pop.
- cwl157, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think the RIAA needs a new hobby. Competitive knitting anyone?
- Abatrour, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This just in! Singing along with your favorite songs is illegal. :P
- einsteindesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I work with a band and their manager schooled me on why lyrics are protected. It's a legit beef. Very surprised it took this long to become an issue.
- dgath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Slashdot already covered it, 6 years ago
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=99/01/19/1513226&tid=95 - jsnkc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Well they better shut down kareoke bars "
Bars with DJ's or kareoke pay royalties to the record companies in order to play music so they are safe. - freonchill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yea, so what are we supposed to do when they [RIAA/labels] are TOO CHEAP to spend the $.50 to put the lyrics in the liner notes?!
i remember being in a radio industry meeting 2 summers ago and they said the the BIG THING now was that the steet vendors were putting the liner notes w/ the illegal audio cds they were selling, like it was something new and trendy and that they should jump on that bandwagon too - HOLY COW BATMAN, ITS LINER NOTES!
aight, fine - if we cant host them, the RIAA can
i wonder if they want to any up for that webserver bill
oh wait, i forgot, they can pay for it - they sued everyone in the american populution, they should be able to host it for, what, atleast a week. - jsnkc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lyrics are copyrighted just like the songs are and shouldn't be published without permission. They have every right to want them removed from the internet. If you worte a book and someone published it online for free you'd be pissed about it too and want it taken down.
- BadDolphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lyrics sites are just someone's -opinion- of what it sounds like the singer is singing. There's NO way to know for sure what the author's words are unless you obtain the lyrics direct from the artist (or their goon squads). If you want it right from the horse's mouth, so to speak, you can probably buy the lyrics in published form. They're rarely identical, thus the RIAA has no valid reason for suing people because they've written a mere opinion. I sure liked this country better back when it still resembled America.
- Jeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Stupid RIAA. Now I have even less incentive to go buy music. Especially these days where many are too cheap to put the lyrics on the inside cover. Guess we can just hum now cause we might get sued for uttering the lyrics of a song.
- rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Classic RIAA... this just in...
ALL PEOPLE WHO LIKE MUSIC ARE NOW CRIMINALS.
(now pay up!) - HavokTG1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't they realize alot of people do a lyric search to find the song they have just heard and only remember a few words. I do this when I have no clue who sings it but really want to find it ( via google with "lyrics" outside the quotes ).
How does that hurt sales? It could actually benefit them. - slopduck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0THIS IS NOT ABOUT THE RIAA, THIS IS ABOUT WARNER/CHAPPELL PUBLISHING. Be mad at the right people!
- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they went after lyrics.ch back in the day. (98-99 iirc)
- samstr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RIAA are absolute garbage but most of the lyric sites out there suck anyway.
lyrics.google.com is what we need :)
let the pro's run the show $ - aa3000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Do they all sit in a meeting and decide who they are going to sue today?"
Yes. - DigitalAnarkist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Free music for everyone. I couldn't care less if the RIAA or any of its "artists" makes another dime..."
There won't be any more music to steal after our artists stop making money. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0as long as dumb ***** teeny boppers (the ones that buy the ***** like nsync) they will not go out of buisness.
It's the way our lame society works, kids see a commercial and they have to have it and the dull parents buy it for them. - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This just in! Man sued by the RIAA for singing song. Rumors had been spreading that the RIAA was using surveillance technology in car radios, pc sound cards and satellite receivers to ensure that private users were not infringing upon what the RIAA refers to as their intellectual property. John Smith was walking into his house in suburban Madison, WI, when his singing was picked up by the orbiting satellite the RIAA put in place last week with cooperation from NASA...When questioned on the witness stand Mr Smith simply said, "I like Karma Chamelion. I know Culture Club is no longer, but I still like the tune." Mr Smith could face a fine of up to 1 meeellion dollars.
- silentvirus, on 10/25/2008, -0/+0Does this mean I should stop working on my lyrics site? I was working on creating a lyrics commuity, somewhat like Digg. Seems like a waste now...
- kungfustickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know why they're doing this. This is so that people can't figure out what the artists are really singing. *Joke*
Wow I am just baffled by the record industry. Are they trying to be annoying? - cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ridiculous
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guys, there is no mention in this article, or the REAL article (stop posting to ***** blogs, would you??) about the RIAA.
- donbigmano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What law says that you can't publish the lyrics of songs on a web site?, None. The RIAA needs to ***** off before they start to piss me off even more.
- Shen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The RIAA are, like any corporation, trying to make the most money for themselves and not caring about anybody else because people just get in the way of money. Sucks, eh?
- FaNtAsMa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The PR guy at the RIAA must be a ***** retard or something... I mean, honestly, what are they trying to prove?
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hilarious.
- DigitalAnarkist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What law says that you can't publish the lyrics of songs on a web site?"
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I bet sometime in the near future they get pissed about the radio and want all public radio stations shut down and turned into paid subscriptions to where they get the bulk of the income.
- thad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok they are getting out of hand, when will the Government or hell even the people step in and wake these idiots up?
