- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+36I saw him on the Johnny Cash tribute. He's amazingly articulate and well mannered. He might actually mean what he writes about!
What a concept. An Artist doing it for the art and not the cash.
Trent, you're awesome. Keep on at em. - etx313, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36Take that Metallica.
- markloveshawaii, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36NIN is awesome!
- alpha2omega, on 10/10/2007, -4/+37I would say the order should go like this:
buy directly from artists at concerts/website etc
buy legally (yeah, BUY music you like, cheapasses)
download illegally
and then at the very bottom, buy from a pirate. - latour, on 10/10/2007, -3/+36i love trent :)
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+28Trent doesn't want you to buy from the labels.
He sees a few dollars, maybe, off that $20+ CD. They were selling Year Zero for $30+.
You're not supporting artists with CDs, you're supporting the labels. It's like saying buying coke helps out the poor drug mules instead of making dealers rich. What a joke. - dodgyd55, on 10/10/2007, -3/+22trent is a hero
- TheSmiddy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20NIN are awesome, when the came to Australia i flew to melbourne just to see them, me and my housemate thought the show was so good we got tickets to the third night and saw them again.
- TomRemixed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+17Artists tend to make very little from album releases. The money is in live shows so if you want to support an artist because you like their music go see them.
- MavRevMatt, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16More people need to be like him.
- n1pz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15Because he's one of the only voices that makes perfect sense?
- maddskillz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16It's a lot easier to do it for the art, once you have already got paid
- kriminalintent, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14It's so ironic one of the only bands that make music worth buying is promoting downloading, Great stuff.
- dmpapwor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13If you haven't heard, Trent is changing the band lineup. http://starbulletin.com/2007/09/14/features/story05.html
- n1pz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Taking the business out of the music business and giving it back to the people who enjoy it, if only more artists would be so selfless.
- TheRemoteViewer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11He's talking about Australia. They sold the CD for MORE than a standard album there because the label thought they'd make more money that way.
- shabumike, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Respect.
- shadeOgrey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11I would ask the opposite. I can see why Trent Reznor is rather important in the music world. But why the ***** does anyone care about Bono? I've never understood his mass appeal. Although I do like some of U-2's earlier stuff.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Then pay the Artist, instead of the cartel. Which is what Trent is suggesting. Why should Industry decide what you listen to, or enjoy?
Full circle logic, FTW. - PacoDEmu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Wouldn't be illegal if more artists cared for their fans the way Trent does.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -1/+9Are you serious? Year Zero was ***** awesome.
- rhino369, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I didn't know Chinese people who live in China are called Asian-American.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Yes, there's places outside the US. They even use dollars!
- mcalica, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9free downloads are the best way to advertise music...with my music, i'll download it and if i like the album i'll buy it. I think this keeps artists from making fluff on their albums. Before the internet there were so many albums that had 2 good songs and then the rest was fluff...well, now they can't do that which is good for us consumers.
- Jaq524, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Don't know why you got dugg down, that's really how it is. The "band" is ONLY for live concerts, everything on the CDs is actually just Trent.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Not in an industry controlled by a cartel of 4 sleazy, corrupt and greedy corporations.
- hotsoda, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Give me a way to download lossless files and I'm fine paying.
There's no reason to have the middleman. - Roblodocus, on 10/10/2007, -5/+12Digged. I'm not a fan of Nine Inch Nails but this is a really nice gesture. Well done umm... Trent.
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Dugg.
Digged...ugh. People just don't give a ***** about how unintelligent they sound, do they. - bromac, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6If they don't care about their fans, they're not artists.
Art is used to convey a message. If you don't care about who hears that message, you're a poseur. - Grego123, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8Trent Reznor is a personal hero, he is doing what is right
- Myonosken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6You sir are a retard.
- expectopatronum, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8trent reznor is amazing. he really does care about his fans. this is exactly why nin is my favorite band :)
- exomni, on 10/10/2007, -4/+9lol @ "the band"
NiN is Trent. There really is no "band." - CancerBomb, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Exact same sound? Nine Inch Nails is one of the few bands that sounds completely different from album to album. And not only that, they don't have two songs that sound the same. The only real consistency is that all of Trent's work kicks a ton of ass.
And if you've ever seen NIN in concert, you'd know they're well worth seeing two nights in a row. (The first time I saw them I was so impressed I flew to Toronto to see them again a few months later.) - ZenMojo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Oddly enough, I downloaded a bunch of his songs off the internet, turned around and ended up buying the entire album off of iTunes since I liked it so much. It must be karma working for him. It's one thing to take information, it's another to try and profit off of that information.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The other funny thing about that theory is that infinite supply should reduce prices to zero. (or at least to the cost of distribution)
- MikeonTV, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6People just can't keep their mouths shut. There is not downloading of illegal music, remember?!
- fires, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I know that in South Africa, were I live, you pay about R150 for a cd and the artist(s) including local artist(s) get about R15 max. (about R7 to $1).
The other 90% goes to the record company and all the middle men. I work with a bass player from a very successful local band who told me this.
I've completely stopped buying cd's (except at shows) after hearing this. If you want to support independent artists, get an Emusic account, they have good metal, trance and other electronic music. - wevegotthejazz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I'll still pirate music from any artist on the RIAA roster even if they are good.
These artists pay a price when they are part of an organization that is doing so much to exploit artists and destroy and homogenize western culture
Sorry Radiohead, NIN, etc, but until you go indie (fortunately NIN is going to be sometime in the future), I won't buy your music. - parabiosis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Take notes, Lars
- bromac, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9If you're a good artist, it's easier to get paid.
- PacoDEmu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3NIN is no U2
you've got that right
And a man's voice becomes very strong when he is infallible. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4"and he exhorts Chinese fans to download his music for free"
What about the rest of us? - xGeneric, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Two of the most amazing albums I've ever heard, The Downward Spiral and The Fragile, sound absolutely nothing like any other music I've heard before. You can group the Downward Spiral into Industrial for a lot of its tracks(though no other industrial band came close to NiN IMHO), but The Fragile... the variety of sounds, strength of emotion, and lyrical content are nothing that I've heard from Bono. Especially when you consider the other types of music that were around at the time.
Get back to me when Bono can start an album with a song like Somewhat Damaged, end it with Ripe (With Decay), while having songs like The Day The World Went Away, Just Like You Imagined, and Into The Void thrown in between.
You ever hear The Wretched performed live? Awesome! - WikiEasy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Are you an absolute retard? Go say ***** about the Chinese government in China and see what happens to you.
- ness0013, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3interesting link
appreciate the update - Randinn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I was hoping we'd have this by now, the net's been open for long enough for bands to cut their label and distribute their music on the net themselves.
- simpleid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Why haven't artists thought about making something like a Steam client.. except for their music. :-)
An official industry release tool, could be torrent based even. - riverstyx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've been a nine inch nails fan since 94, after downward spiril came out i was just sold for life. My dad hated them too, I understand now that his music was just different from everything else. Still is. I haven't really been into him since the fragile though, that cd was great but i fell out of the loop after that. Thats when i turned 18 or so. I checked out a song or two on the new one, didn't really get into it though. I guess im getting to be kinda, old-fashioned and set in my ways on music.
I didn't know he was going the independent route to selling cds, but i'm pretty impressed and i wish him all the best. He definitely made an impact on my life. -
