- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37108 October 2007: Big News
"Hello everyone. I've waited a LONG time to be able to make the following announcement: as of right now Nine Inch Nails is a totally free agent, free of any recording contract with any label. I have been under recording contracts for 18 years and have watched the business radically mutate from one thing to something inherently very different and it gives me great pleasure to be able to finally have a direct relationship with the audience as I see fit and appropriate. Look for some announcements in the near future regarding 2008. Exciting times, indeed."
posted by Trent Reznor at 10:45 AM. - justmcg, on 10/15/2007, -10/+269I was so excited, I logged into Digg after months just to digg it.
- plastikman, on 10/15/2007, -2/+240Finally.
- cunnybungler, on 10/10/2007, -3/+169FYI: The reason I didn't digg nin.com itself is because the news will probably be wiped off their front page in the next day or so, and they don't archive old blog posts there.
- mrshickadance9, on 10/10/2007, -0/+146i've said this many times and I'll say it again. Trent Reznor just gets it.
- Leftcrow, on 10/10/2007, -1/+144Awesome! Maybe he'll do what Radiohead are doing with their current record with Year Zero Part 2. :)
- DeadSociety, on 10/10/2007, -0/+79Great, two of my favourite bands have gone indie.
Can't wait, you just know Trents got some great plans. - patientXero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+78Awesome. I paid $10 for Radiohead's new record just to support this kind of move by major artists.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -10/+82Trent Reznor for President in 08!
- DrywallThief, on 10/10/2007, -6/+77I logged in after a year just to digg you down.
- founderofpork, on 10/10/2007, -7/+74NIN and Radiohead...two of my favorite bands going all indie in one year! Does that mean I can be cool with the indie kids now?
- deadlikeoscar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+571
- Scheissen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+52FLAC
- 4degrees, on 10/10/2007, -12/+63kick ass, Trent Reznor sets a new precedent yet again.
- calinazaret, on 10/10/2007, -7/+56right after Radiohead
- Namco, on 10/10/2007, -2/+50No, you're right. Trent is still planning on splitting himself in half, right down the middle.
- deBeuk, on 10/10/2007, -2/+49"Universal can squeeze him out of radio eventually no matter what his music sounds like"
Because NIN gets played so often on the radio? - LVDave, on 10/10/2007, -2/+48Even though I don't care for NIN, since its, I assume, still a pretty big act, this may be the little tiny crack in the RIAA dam, just before it crumbles into dust.... We can only hope.....
- dreesemonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+46Great news, I'll gladly buy his next CD.
- alpharaptor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+40i guess it's ok to BUY the next album now?
- KeyLimePie, on 10/10/2007, -5/+43Good for him. Everyone should buy his next record twice.
- cromulent742, on 10/10/2007, -2/+40If you ask me, Prince's "hard times" have nothing to do with the fact that he has no record label association. The reason he can't sell records on his own is because he hasn't been relevant for the last decade.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -1/+35If your a NiN fan, you know that he never performs with the same people very much. He likes to have variety in the way the band sounds when Live.
- grapesofbaath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+33Good for him. How many more records did he have left on his contract?
- Araxen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+33Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails. There's no one to split up with.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+33Thom Yorke and Trent Reznor are setting great examples.
Let's hope more musicians follow in their footsteps. - psyjoniz, on 10/10/2007, -8/+40RAWK THE ***** ON TRENT. you are my hero, truly.
- toasty168, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32don't like his music but i'll buy his next album on principle alone
- edrift101, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30Can't wait for the next Nine Inch Nails album! It's going to sell through the roof!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+31Maybe they'll do a collaboration.. Kid Zero or something.
- silent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28The difference is that NIN fans aren't turning on the radio to hear NIN or any industrial music.
- ness0013, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27This makes me smile.
:) - kingp, on 10/10/2007, -6/+33It's the start of the revolution. Eventually more bands will catch on and ditch the labels altogether. I'm glad Trent did this. The destruction of the industry, as we know it, has begun.
- planksconstant, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27it doesn't really matter WHO did it first, what matters is that this IS happening, and thus making the music industry a much better place. i don't really like NIN, and i love Radiohead, but i respect them equally for doing this.
- fritzon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+23Only if it wasn't that Trent has talked about doing this for the longest time.
- PsychoFreak, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22the internet was nowhere near what it is today when Prince made his split...therefore there is more than a sliver of hope this will catch on
- weareglass, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23First Radiohead, then NiN. Pretty sweet. It will be intresting to see if this trend increases or if it will be isolated. I hope this is just the beginning.
- MasteRR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18Any hopes that he will re-release all the old albums? Or are they locked down to the record company? If he does re-release them I am so buying all of them.
(Is CD under RIAA record company? If yes, Pirate, If No, Buy) - partickle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19The labels are doomed. Their business model hasn't worked in over 10 years. They are too stuck in the old mentality. Amazing that they can't figure out the internet. Well, actually not that amazing...they are a bunch of criminals with no creative thought except how to find creative ways to steal money from truly creative people...
- IllBeBack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18Thanks for going all CSI on his ass. Nice use of your time, I'm sure.
- Popper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17You're talking about the equivalent of a tapeworm deciding that it doesn't want to live in an intestinal tract anymore. Britney Spears career would be even more pathetic without the machine pushing it along. I agree with your sentiment, but let's try to encourage actual talented artists and not mere puppets to go solo. If Spears decided to ditch her company tomorrow, she would be forgotten until her Hustler spread with a donkey in three months.
- AngryBacon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+17Right in Two?
No wait, thats Tool. - tallNT, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Fantastic news!! Congratulations, Trent!!
- BradGroux, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Now hurry the hell up and tour the US already... ya crazy bastard!
- HonestAbe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16"useless money-grubbing middleman"
Deserves to be said again. - Qonfused, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16Awesome, awesome, awesome, awesome.
- MerryMortician, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15These are the albums we need to buy. That is the biggest and best way to send a message to the artists, riaa, and everyone else involved.
- thelastknowngod, on 10/10/2007, -10/+24PUT YOUR MUSIC ON EMUSIC.COM!!
***** itunes drm while youre at it. - jeffgtr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Smart move for Trent and Radiohead. They will make more money and their music will most likely cost us less and be of superior quality without the RIAA mucking about with their art. Personally I will pay a little more than the typical cd at Best Buy for their music as a matter of principal. I hope everyone else follows this example and rewards those who break lose from the RIAA.
- betobeto, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15"Universal can squeeze him out of radio"
Well, there's always teh Interwebz... online radio, podcasts and such. Not as widespread a market for sure, but it's not like true NIN fans didn't know their ways to get to the goods anyway. -
