- Synthesize, on 11/13/2007, -1/+102I happily supported and payed the $5 directly to the artist. I got my LOSSLESS FLAC and digital artwork. Couldn't be any more happier as the album is fantastic.
Even if the music is not your cup of tea, take notice, as this is music revolution! - JD52, on 11/13/2007, -2/+66Yet another nail in the coffin. Things are better.
- xthroughmyeyesx, on 11/05/2007, -0/+58$5? Drop in the fkn bucket. I'm in.
- sophiaperennis, on 11/05/2007, -0/+47These two guys GET IT. The new model for the music industry in years to come.
- arugge, on 11/04/2007, -20/+62I have a question? Why is it every time Trent Reznor takes a ***** it ends up on the front page of Digg? I mean I'm all for what he is doing but come on Nine Inch Nails hasn't been relevant in over 10 years. Yes they have a loyal fan base but this isn't like Bruce Springsteen or U2 is doing this. Madonna leaving her record label and going out on her own makes an impact. And even that being said it isn't the established stars that will make people take a look and say this is the future. Yes artists deserve to make money and yes i think there is absolutely no need for a Record Label anymore especially when the record labels are so clueless on how to sell music. But still this would be like a revolution ran by Ralph Nader. Is anyone truly taking note of this?
- Frostman3D, on 11/05/2007, -1/+42This is awesome. I can only hope that all artists will do this and completely cut the labels out of the process.
- sophia269, on 11/13/2007, -1/+41For those that haven't listened to the album yet, it's pretty good. I listened to it for free and really liked it, so I paid $5 and got it in 320kbp mp3s. Well worth it IMO.
- pilot3033, on 11/13/2007, -10/+42you ARE a douchebag for not paying for the album.
- SaintNoir, on 11/04/2007, -2/+30A great album and one everyone should hear. I just hope this model proves successful enough that others follow. I do think some interesting paradoxes are being created though (new, unheard of artists gaining recognition sans label - is having a big man (Reznor in this case) in your corner the only way this would be viable?). This idea will have to continue to evolve...
- purzzzell, on 04/01/2009, -0/+26Congrats - you spawned an April Fool's Joke that got frontpaged!
- vulcanius, on 11/03/2007, -2/+28I never really listen to NIN and such but I'm definitely paying the $5 to give my support.
- str3ama, on 11/05/2007, -1/+26I would strongly suggest that everyone interested the movement buy the album, because we have a lot more to gain from the success of this system. If it fails just this one time, the record execs will cite it every time - even if the business model succeeds countless occasions afterwards, they'll still use this one failed attempt to rationalize their archaic thinking.
- jeffgtr, on 11/06/2007, -0/+25Why is Trent Reznor on the front page of Digg? Because he is sticking his neck out to make a change for the better. Whether you play music or just listen to it you are going to benefit. For years the big record labels have filtered and watered down the artists work before it gets to your ears. In many cases the end product is nothing like the artist envisioned. Music was/is product, give the masses something that sounds like something that sold before, never mind the muse. Now some people like Trent are putting themselves on the line to remove that curtain. The number of hands reaching out for their cut of the money that you pay for the artists work are being chopped off. The artist makes more money, the music costs you less. Many people have said that lesser known artists will not be able to benefit from this distribution model. I disagree. Have you ever tried to get a contract with a big label? In many many instances success at getting a contract had little to do with the music, more to do with looks, stage presence and willingness to let the record company to mold you and your music into something they thought the masses would buy. What is happening now is that the distance between the scream in the studio and your ears is shrinking. Its a big deal. Should be on the front page of Digg all week as far as I'm concerned.
As far as Niggy Tardust, great recording, a bargain at $15 let alone $5 compared to all the crap thats been shoved in our ears in the past. - gumpx, on 11/06/2007, -12/+35the lazy generation dictates that 5 dollars, physical CD or not, is the right price. for the quality of the music and the finished product, why not? great record.
- yakvomit, on 11/03/2007, -2/+24ha "I'd still prefer a physical CD, personally" pay for the FLAC then burn one yourself.
The album is great, Trent's influence is VERY apparent. I gladly paid the $5 on this album. Compared to the clumsy effort by Radiohead with their In Rainbows release this was effortless and prompt.
The only use for a hard copy is vinyl in my opinion, and that's only if the original recording was done at a reasonably high enough quality to justify it. CD's just end up becoming coasters at my house. - DivisibleByZero, on 11/13/2007, -2/+22Laziness and thriftiness are often mutually exclusive, so I'm not sure how you're relating the price point to laziness. If anything, a lazy person is going to download the free version to avoid that extra step of putting in credit card information...
- hiphoc, on 11/04/2007, -2/+21Did the lawyers who run the labels really think that the Karma from stealing artists money for 60 years was not gonna catch up with them?
And the tombstone reads:
Here lies BMI, SONY and Universal. The once great purveyers of crappy music are no more. ***** labels with ***** slave contracts... We hardley knew ye. - i4mt3hwin, on 11/03/2007, -2/+19This is a great idea, but i'd rather get the music from one central location. If a torrent community opened up that released torrents based on this it would be much easier. Artists would be able to dynamically change prices based upon their popularity (someone just starting off would charge nothing, but a main stream artist could charge $5 or so).
- 7717, on 11/04/2007, -5/+22You're a towel
- meells, on 11/03/2007, -0/+16Just DL'ed it, and happily paid the 5'er. 113Mg loaded in 4.5 minutes, checkout was a breeeeze, and they take Paypal. Beautiful job guys, and I havent even heard the album yet. Just to help support your plan, I dont even care if I like it, (but I hope I do.)
- TTwoA, on 11/13/2007, -1/+17I bought it yesterday. It's basically the opposite of what I usually listen to and I probably won't listen to it much (if at all), but it was well worth it to support such a great idea. ***** the RIAA!
- Nore, on 04/01/2009, -0/+15OMG HI MOM!
- Blacula, on 11/03/2007, -1/+15What a poor analogy. It's more like entering a museum for free because the donation bin is closed.
- Pake, on 11/03/2007, -2/+16It's a decent album the first time through. I still need to run through it a few more times to appreciate it a bit more. The song I'm loving the most is the "Sunday Bloody Sunday" remix right now. It's definitely a new experience though, hearing rapping lyrics with industrial background.
- cmirza, on 11/05/2007, -0/+12Even though the album is not really something I'd usually buy, the way it's being sold is EXACTLY how all music should be sold. $5 for an album in FLAC/MP3 w/ digital artwork in PDF. Every artist, especially unsigned artists, should take notice of this album. I would buy alot more music, and pirate far less if more artists sold their music like this.
- zeuslgn, on 11/03/2007, -0/+12For me, Reznor is hit or miss and I don't know Saul Williams. But I will tell you this: $5 is small price to pay to shove a boot up the RIAA's ass and for that reason alone, I'm in. If the record is awesome, so much the better. FTR!
- phaseblue, on 11/03/2007, -1/+13It really is an awesome album. Saul Williams is one of those people whose music I'd run into several times in the past, but the pairup with Trent Reznor really made both of them sound a whole new kind of creative. Artistic as hell, all the way through.
Proud of my $5, to say the least. - juicebag, on 11/05/2007, -1/+12Anyone else actually like the album? I don't normally like rap but I really like this album.
- juicebag, on 11/05/2007, -0/+11When I say Niggy, you say nothing.
niggy - xtc46, on 11/12/2007, -0/+10so you want a middle man to act as a distributor for the artists...I bet the middle man would want some cut of the profits. where or where have I seen this... oh I know... its called the record industry and iTunes(for downloads)
- xtc46, on 11/04/2007, -1/+10many people will pay just to support the artist. They know that if they dont pay, the artist will be gone. I pay for the music becasue I love it, everyone I know pays for music the love. I wont buy a CD for 1 good song, ill find it on iTunes, I see nothing wrong with paying 20 bucks for a cd that I enjoy every song on, and I happily paid the 100 bucks for tickets to NINs last concert here in Hawaii.
- Blacula, on 11/03/2007, -0/+9So it'd be like OiNK with a "Donate to artist" Paypal button? That would be fantastic, I know I'd use it.
- jmob, on 11/05/2007, -0/+8aren't they selling it from one location already?
- neckfire, on 11/13/2007, -0/+8It could work for a small band. Give away the low bitrate mp3- pay a few bucks for the FLAC if people like it and make your money by going on tour. The less prevalent the record companies are the more likely people will seek out new artists. I think there will be so much more good music available that artists will not be as famous as they once could be. A lot more great music will emerge and a greater number of artists will be able to make a living but not necessarily a killing,
- HawkeyeMatt, on 11/05/2007, -0/+8
- fritzon, on 11/03/2007, -0/+8Only twice? I feel like I've been digging this at least once a day for the past week ;)
That said—I could keep digging it for another couple of weeks as it is an AWESOME album and a great distribution model. - inactive, on 11/04/2007, -1/+8How has NIN/Reznor been irrelevant? He's one of the top artists of this generation.. that's like saying Led Zeppelin or Nirvana is irrelevant.
Or are you saying that because he's not on the billboard charts? In actuality, THAT music is irrelevant considering 90% of the artists on there won't be around in 10 years. - tehjai, on 11/03/2007, -0/+7Easier to get? How hard is it to click a link to pay $5 dollars or to click on a link that says it's free?
- meells, on 11/03/2007, -0/+7The only personal info I was asked for was an email address. Put it in, click Paypal....done. I realize that everyone doesnt use PP, but for the millions that do....it took all of 20 seconds. As far as the new middlemen, whats the better deal for an artist? The shaved profit off the top from labels, or the double or triple profit from direct sale minus a 25 cent transaction fee?
- dark1587, on 11/05/2007, -1/+8Shutup.
- tehjai, on 11/04/2007, -1/+8glad to see where you live is finally coming into the 80s...
- juicebag, on 11/06/2007, -2/+9They still sell singles in the UK?
- dafragsta, on 11/05/2007, -1/+8nothing
- estat, on 11/13/2007, -0/+7Same here. Bought the flac version and encoded a 192kbps VBR version for portables.
BTW, I would really have a hard time describing this using any conventional genre types. It's not rap or hip hop in the way that most would think. Download the samples and listen to them a few times. It's definitely unlike anything I've heard in awhile. - Hollic, on 11/04/2007, -1/+8"It isn't like Bruce Springsteen or U2 is doing this."
Sorry, had to make sure people actually saw this so they could determine your post was irrelevant. - Tippis, on 11/03/2007, -0/+7...that's why I wonder how these big-media execs ever managed to get the job: they seemingly have no clue about basic economics. Price your product in the "chump change" segment, and people will buy it by the bucketload -- price it the "house downpayment" category, and people will hesitate, or just nick it from you.
- inactive, on 11/09/2007, -1/+7Please do not joke about that. My Dad killed himself because of that song.

What is Digg?
