- SpiritOfRock, on 07/10/2009, -1/+56I'm not a huge NIN fan but I enjoyed reading this. Seems simple, honest, and intelligent.
+ respect for Reznor. - sondatch, on 07/10/2009, -4/+58Gotta love any artist that doesn't weep and moan (U2, Metallica) about music being free and makes intelligent attempts to adapt. There are plenty of successful business models being pioneered by new and established artists alike.
- robinthehood, on 07/10/2009, -3/+36He definitely is thinking a lot more about the industry than the industry is. Kinda funny actually. From a business standpoint, if I were running Sony Music Entertainment I'd be willing to drop him a 1$ million salary to update the business model to something that represents the 21st century.
Trent is one hell of an oddity to say the least. A musician that really became a businessman.
As a caveat, I really don't like his music anymore... Haven't since TDS but I do respect his intelligence in relation to the music industry, where it's heading, and where it should be going. - megaton, on 07/12/2009, -1/+28Agreed.
I'm working on my first rock/pop album ("rock/pop" used-loosely), and the last thing I've considered is getting paid for it. *****, **I* WOULD* pay money for someone to listen to my stuff. It's not about the green, it's about the enjoyment. I write music to entertain. Making money, on top of that, is a fantastic thing, but never my goal.
I'll share a link to my latest single (in-progress; album is about 1/4th complete, so many things will change), and I hope SOMEbody listens to and enjoys this FREE ENTERTAINMENT: http://music.solaristudios.com/music/mayday_on_mar ... BUT ***BURY ME*** IF YOU THINK YOU SHOULD! I'm NOT trying to promote my music, just think some of you may like it.
Music... if you pay me to hear my stuff, great. If not, I'm glad you had an opportunity to enjoy it. Your enjoyment is mine, friends. I expect the same as you...
Fin. - freeridstylee, on 07/10/2009, -0/+25That's some of the stuff I tried to tell the retards in my old band. They still think some magic A&R rep is going to fly in and set them up on a private jet to tour the world. Assclowns.
- SpiritOfRock, on 07/10/2009, -1/+22Temper tantrum? Did you even read the article?
- GorfTron, on 07/12/2009, -0/+18Bow down before the one you serve.
- Shaggy3, on 07/12/2009, -0/+16Too many people think its all about 'getting made' and getting a call from a record label or whatever. Its all about the fans.
- popzero, on 07/11/2009, -0/+14It would be interesting to see if an established and successful artist could find a similar level of success by following this path while secretly pretending to be a "new" artist. Kind of like authors when they write under pseudonyms (e.g. Stephen King/Richard Bachman).
- thejackyl, on 07/12/2009, -0/+13Good read. Trent's a smart guy.
- gibson85, on 07/12/2009, -0/+12interesting how the music industry loves technology when it comes to cheaply producing a lot of newer "pop" and "alternative" music with autotune, but then completely doesn't understand (or doesn't want to understand) how to work with technology from a sales standpoint. its a very childish mindset. thank goodness for artists like Trent, Wilco and Radiohead.
- Maynza, on 07/12/2009, -1/+11http://digg.com/music/Trent_Reznor_s_advice_for_ne ...
- Shaggy3, on 07/12/2009, -0/+9Yes actually, I am.
- doshindude, on 07/12/2009, -1/+10Lars Ulrich is that you? and are you still sore about Napster?
- Spire3660, on 07/12/2009, -0/+8How about musician who had to become a businessman to be the musician he WANTED to be.
- robertisaar, on 07/12/2009, -0/+7buried for dumbassery
- ParticleMan420, on 07/12/2009, -0/+7oh so you're just bitching about something completely unrelated and looking like an asshat while doing it?
if you hate him so much, why are you reading his forums and still bitter about it now?
did he steal your girlfriend or something? - ElCheLikesAudi, on 07/12/2009, -0/+6Lyric could use some work but I like it. Love the synth!
- TheCollective00, on 07/12/2009, -1/+7Trent is a marketing genius...he sold 2500 of his deluxe box sets of The Slip at 300 bucks a piece...that's 3 quarters of a million dollars! I don't know anybody who could sell 2500 of ANYTHING and make that kind of green.
- robertisaar, on 07/12/2009, -0/+6you're going to get what you deserve.
- Kronos6948, on 07/12/2009, -0/+6Damn right, Shaggy. Even from a business standpoint, this works, since you're providing something that people want. If it's good enough that a lot of people want it, it makes good money.
- diggcommentguy, on 07/12/2009, -0/+6I want to digg you up for the imagery/wording; but I just can't do it. I'll just leave you alone.
- BillOrly, on 07/12/2009, -1/+7so are you a midget?
glad to hear you like NIN though... - 1longtime, on 07/12/2009, -0/+6Ah "inactive." This guy is *the* digg troll... I thought his account was banned actually. His head is placed in his ass at all times.
- nevetando, on 07/12/2009, -0/+6You are too stupid to post in this thread...
- Shaggy3, on 07/12/2009, -1/+6I don't like NIN much at all, but he really knows what hes talking about. So yeah, sucks for you.
- ophello, on 07/12/2009, -0/+5I agree with Trent. There needs to be a new business model started by musicians and supported by fans. We don't need the middle-man anymore.
- Gatesophile, on 07/12/2009, -0/+5"There are way better bands on the radio like Papa Roach" I laughed.
"Mr. Reznor should take a lesson from the Fallout Boys of the world" and then I laughed some more. - 1longtime, on 07/12/2009, -0/+5in my opinion, listening to other people's opinion during your creative process is a big mistake.
btw i liked it. but don't listen to my opinion!
dugg. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 07/12/2009, -0/+5Good luck living for money and notoriety instead of self fulfillment. Come back and let us know how it all turns out!
- sharkydog, on 07/12/2009, -0/+5I just heard the first song and while it's not my style of music, it's not bad. It's better than Coldplay and look how much money they've made... might want to get the lead singer to drop his voice an octave though during the chorus. Pretty good stuff.
- thejackyl, on 07/12/2009, -1/+5Sucks for you
- TheAbsintheHare, on 07/12/2009, -1/+5You people complaining about this stuff, I don't think you know how Digg works :P
A long time ago, Mrbabyman probably got a streak of popular stories, when he first signed up for Digg. When you Digg good stuff, people "subscribe" to your Diggs. They come to your profile to see what you've been Digging, and they see you have more good stuff and Digg that too. His stories may be dupes, but the first Digg was probably from someone unknown, which means a lot of people aren't perusing that guy's Diggs, and it very well might not have made it to the front page at all. Whereas, Mrbabyman comes and dupes it because he thinks it's a good article, a lot of other people see it and Digg it too, it makes it to the front page and now you get to read it. So, if anything, Mrbabyman is doing you a service by finding Diggs that might not make it to the front page, but are good anyway, and making sure they get there, where everyone can see them.
So whether it was Mrbabyman or Unknownguy, what does it matter to you? You got to read a good article. That's what Digg is for; to introduce you to new, good stuff. It's obviously working. Quit complaining. - Amadeus2490, on 07/12/2009, -1/+5You mean like Garth Brooks and Chris Gaines, or David Bowie and Ziggy Stardust?
- ParticleMan420, on 07/12/2009, -1/+5sure is. now you wont get that big check from digg for submitting a story.
- KJ83, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4Sounds better than Nickelback. Not bad for a "sketch"
The thing great music does is it becomes greater than the sum of it's parts, or individual instruments. This track is like that. Nice work. Can't wait to hear the finished product. - AmnesiacJack, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4Dugg for good music.
- TheCollective00, on 07/12/2009, -1/+4The Slip is actually very decent.
- dafragsta, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3You didn't even read the article did you? The music IS the ***** marketing. Give it away. If it's good, good things will come. The one thing Trent neglected to mention was YouTube, and it's possibly the best marketing tool of them all. Just look at Jack Conte and SEVERAL other artists who have found a following on YouTube. It's the closest thing to a live music venue in your home and people love live music.
Also, as someone who appreciates a great swatch of music and has aspirations of moving that direction career-wise in the next few years, I'd say do your best not to sound like anyone else. Do your best to not be categorized into a genre and make good music based on those parameters, and people will listen to you. They just want to hear something that a) sounds good b) sounds like nothing they've heard before and c) speaks to their sensibilities d) has a good presentation when it's performed live. That's it.
In fact, every sentence in your post, Amadeus2490 just screams "I either didn't read the article, or I didn't try to make any sense of it." Marketing music is no different than marketing anything else. You just need to find the path of least resistance between you and building an audience. That is more important than money, because if you do that, the money ***** rain down on you. Look at all these ***** webcomics and sites that started as grassroots endeavors. I'm sure Kevin Rose could point out quite a few parallels between what Trent said and his experience. - timmyrulz27, on 07/12/2009, -3/+6another time mrbabyman gets a story already submitted by two people a day ago to the front page...
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -2/+5As someone who has already done almost exactly what Trent has said, it works.
www.asthmaboymusic.com
Though I did use flash to build my site... and it was handy to have a graphic design degree. - EdgarG8, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3Of course he does, but what other choices do these bands or artists have now? The internet is saturated with music of all genre's. You have internet radio, myspace music, and others with music left and right. So Trent is giving suggestions and advice on what people should do and expect. Self promotion and different ways of advertising themselves is a good idea.
Record companies are not going to sit and go through thousands of albums looking for the next big thing. If a band can create their own fan base and start to get some kind of recognition then maybe a major label will pick them up and take it from there. In a way it would be something that is prepackaged.
Even then if a band puts out a CD its not going to sell as well as it did in the days of record stores. - shagg187, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3Great read (including the edits). To be honest, I'd be a bit scared (and excited) if I was an artist. Good/bad times though!
- kenhatesemos, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3not exactly my type of music, but not bad. i think most of the problems lie in the vocals. i didn't like the harmonizing, but that's just my opinion. keep it up!
also, the synth that comes in at the mid point is great. definately the highlight of the song. - khfn, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3My roommate was in a band that got signed to RoadRunner and toured on Ozzfesta few years ago. They racked up debt touring and RoadRunner would pay for nothing. They did however offer them some money that they would have to pay back.
- shaynemckay, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2This is pretty good stuff. As a teenager who is making music in a band with friends, this is truly inspiring. Let us know when the album is done.
- khfn, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2I like TDS, but I think year zero is great. when it came out I was amazed on how relevant it felt after listening to it.
- rossisdead, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2Kind of reminds me of some sort of Mew/Sigur Ros thing, but it makes sense considering you list M83 as an influence.
- collution, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2^ After he was basically became cosmopolitan by labels. Makes sense.
- emildorbell, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2The article is a response to everyone who's told him that. Try reading it.

What is Digg?
