V1- Maximum airspeed during takeoff roll when the pilot can safely abort takeoff with the remaining runway (calculated of runway length, a/c weight, altitutde of field, temp, ect).
V2- Rotation (takeoff speed)
V1 is basically your go/no-go decision point. If something happens above V1, you HAVE TO CONTINUE. YOU CAN'T STOP without running out of runway.

- AUAviator, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2There really aren't any "standard emergency procedures" in the sense that running a checklist will always work like magic, if there is even a checklist for your problem. Procedures are only a known starting point for handling any given situation. Every situation, especially an emergency, is different. One personal example: Student is in slow flight dirty at a somewhat high altitude. Engine loses power and is restarting and failing intermittently. The engine failure in flight procedure gets no restart. After cleaning it up and setting for a glide, the engine sound while it briefly coughs to life and fails again just "feels" like mixture. No emergency procedure says pull the mixture back for a restart, but it just felt too rich. Voila restart and back to the airport no prob.
Part of being a good pilot isn't just training procedures but also training for a good decision making process so that when we inevitably do have to improvise we make the correct decision. "They're". - blacktriangle, on 11/20/2008, -0/+2Not quite. That's a hard decision to make; take-off or abort take-off. At that speed, you can easily lose directional control when a blowout occurs. The pilots were probably following the correct protocol when they made the decision to abort.

For my wife and I (both Comm/Inst. rated), V1 was instilled like a religion. Granted, we don't fly out of short airfields very often (never), but we still do a take-off briefing (including runway length, V-speeds, ect) just like anyone with an inkling of CRM training would do (and we're only in a Mooney).
I guess it's just instinct when something goes wrong to try and STOP. Only training can override instinct and teach you to follow procedure (the checklist) in emergency situations.
(Think: Engine out procedure on departure when you were learning how to fly. Sure...landing strait ahead seemed unnatural at the time...but would you even THINK about trying to make a 180deg. turn at low altitude now?) That instinct was broken, and the instinct to stand on the brakes above V1 should be broken too.
I guess it's easy to arm-chair quarterback this though. Who knows how a blown tire affected the performance/stability of the aircraft at such a high speed. - winterface, on 11/20/2008, -2/+3Wow, thats some scary stuff.

How much time do these guys spend at FlightSafety, etc. doing drills for this in sims? Would more sim training be beneficial? - 172pilot, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Agreed.. As a pilot myself, I would say that the planes, even when they malfunction, are very safe, if the pilots are familiar with, and follow emergency procedures. What happens is that in the heat of the moment, the pilots dont realize how dire the situation is until it's too late, and/or they dont think the standard emergency procedures are proper for their specific emergency, and they improvise. Improvisation in these cases usually causes fatal crashes, while the emergency procedures are created to save the people, at the expense of the airframe.

Very true. It's a tough call to make.
It's nice to see other people like doing departure briefings, even single engine. Without that abort plan, the reflex really is to chop it and stop it and that is sometimes, like here unfortunately, the wrong call. - ayeroxor, on 11/20/2008, -2/+2Oh yeah. Real ***** shame about his "cool tattoos".
