5. Jimi Hendrix at Woodstock - theImmodiumGuy, on 08/25/2008, -3/+28Inaccurate. Best rendition of the Star Spangled Banner was Enrico Polazzo before an Angels-Mariners game. Later, Enrico, disguised as the home plate umpire, saved the Queen of England.
If you want a serious answer, this one has always been my favorite - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4880PJnO2E - Hawker400, on 08/24/2008, -4/+27There's nothing wrong with having some pride in where you come from, and believing in the ideals upon which your country was built.
- anaesthetica, on 08/24/2008, -3/+25I never knew about the Marvin Gaye version. Completely transformed the song for me. Amazing.
Also, note to self: never mess with hockey fans. - JazJon, on 08/24/2008, -5/+27Dixie Chicks were most entertaining, but Whitney Houston was as good as it gets when it comes to a pure perfect classic performance
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -4/+20Whitney set the standard by which everyone else is measured. Too bad she turned into a crackhead.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -1/+15What about this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m24KmSCBbxM - cwmather, on 08/25/2008, -2/+16I love America.
- inactive, on 08/24/2008, -12/+25i like the Rosanne Barr version the best!!!!!
- l31101, on 08/25/2008, -4/+16Whitney Houston version was amazing. There isn't anyone who can top her voice.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -0/+12I still get chills from a good performance, thinking about the sacrifices of our forefathers and those who chose to die for the ideal of freedom. If you haven't seen a good documentary or movie on the founding of this country, the HBO John Adams series is excellent.
- RoroCo, on 08/24/2008, -3/+15Jimi's version is the best know and legendary, but there is something very special about Marvin Gaye's version.
- jeremyduffy, on 08/25/2008, -3/+14Whitney was great because she didn't sing it R&B style which means to sing it as crazy and weird as possible so that, while you're technically singing the correct song, you alter the timing and pitch so much that no one can possibly sing along with you.
- serif69, on 08/25/2008, -0/+10My problem is that the national anthem is not a symbol of our government, but of our nation. It's about staying resolute through conflict. It absolutely does not belong to politicians, but to the people.
- Delta32521, on 08/25/2008, -0/+10in a similar vein:

always gives me chills. - rhowell, on 08/24/2008, -16/+26The Dixie Chicks version is the best IMO.
- Shaggy3, on 08/25/2008, -1/+11Ahh I remember in high school convincing the technology teacher to play a recording of that one morning instead of the regular.
They shut it off halfway through and told everyone to have a good day. - lennybird, on 08/25/2008, -0/+9http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zZZFzroHOQ - I love this one. It shows what America could/should be.
- melonhedd, on 08/25/2008, -3/+11There's an original recording?
- obliviousfool, on 08/24/2008, -1/+9Before the AFC Championship game in Denver (between the Steelers and the Broncos) a couple of years ago a trumpeter named Chris Botti played the national anthem. That was, hands down, the best one I've ever seen. I could not find a video, sorry.
- OneLess, on 08/24/2008, -7/+15So by "patriotic fervor," you mean blindly supporting archaic and over-excessive infringements on personal liberty in the name of national security?
- whazdown, on 08/25/2008, -4/+11Maaaan I wish Jimi was still alive.
- serif69, on 08/25/2008, -7/+14I never liked the Hendrix version. I find it to be sarcastic and defiant, which is why I suppose so many people like it.
/prepares for the *****. - bpoteat, on 08/25/2008, -1/+8Actually, it's perfectly fits the definition of subjective.
- gttim, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6Jose Feliciano. An incredible version, that sadly earned him some terrible treatment.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wpdld0RBAk4 - inactive, on 08/25/2008, -11/+17The Dixie Chicks did NOT do a better version than Hendrix. It's not even subjective.
- ks136, on 08/25/2008, -0/+6Saw both of these, and loved them. Gives me hope that the spirit of generosity isn't dead.
- bdbr, on 08/25/2008, -1/+6Funny that the tune originated from a British drinking song.
- ironhide, on 08/25/2008, -0/+5Indeed. Patriotism is believing in your country and its people , not your government.
- thoughtbubble, on 08/25/2008, -1/+6I'm the guy that posted that Marvin Gaye version up on youtube. I'm a video editor and came across it a few years ago and just felt that it should see the light of the internets. Been getting crazy hits lately thanks to the Nike spots, can't wait to see the digg effect. Oh, and for the record, I'm Canadian.
- inactive, on 08/25/2008, -3/+8It should be sang as if you are the person imprisoned on the enemy ship watching the battle unfold. Straight up, dignified, yet proud and passionate. I watched a little chinese girl who was maybe 13 sing it a few years ago on some tv talent show and she brought tears to my eyes. That's how our ***** anthem should be sung. It should bring you to tears. None of this R&B ***** etc. If you drag out "rockets red glare" more then a few seconds you are doing it wrong. Those of you who like's Barr's rendition should be shot along with the pig.
- anagoge, on 08/25/2008, -2/+7Say what you will about America's politics, but damn they have a good anthem. The UK just can't compete with it.
- doshindude, on 08/24/2008, -6/+11wow, you're a tool.
- Diggfluence, on 08/25/2008, -1/+6Marvin Gaye hands down
- rachmaninoffftw, on 08/25/2008, -1/+6Captured on wax cylinder aboard a British ship while Francis Scott Key composed it. Notable for lyric "and the rockets red glare; God I wish I had a beer," which was revised later because of the slant rhyme.
- Anim8me2, on 08/25/2008, -4/+9Whoops, Dixie Chicks was heavily finessed digitally.
I hate that digital sound that all the singers seem to be relying on lately. ***** Cher for making it acceptable with her hit. - quadforce, on 08/25/2008, -3/+7Marvin's is the best to me. Gives me a cold chill every time.. beautiful
- alimantado, on 08/25/2008, -2/+6I think that the hendrix version is truly patriotic, you don't have to agree with certain decisions of your government to be proud of your country
- ironhide, on 08/25/2008, -8/+12Aw, the blind fellating the blind.
- ironhide, on 08/25/2008, -6/+10You mean the ideals that have been discarded in the last 8 years? Mostly because of 9/11. (Or more accurately 9/11 was the excuse for it)
- rickh57, on 08/25/2008, -0/+4I like this version.
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QKCVS57j284 - PhoneGuy, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3Bonus points for reference to attempted murderer Reggie Jackson.

For all you young folks ... Reggie Jackson has NOTHING to do with American Idol! - strum40, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3Red GlaRE!

I'll make up for it now...

- cgbspender, on 08/25/2008, -7/+10"The irony here, of course, is that a few months after this performance The Dixie Chicks would stand in front of a packed house in London and apologize for the impending American invasion of Iraq, saying they were ashamed President Bush hailed from their home state of Texas."
I see no irony. Only true patriotism. - Diggfluence, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3Marvin Gaye Hands Down
- elgeeem, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3marvin's rendition kills me. it's amazing what he does with the song - he take it to a different place, and adds a yearning to it that's so poignant - not to mention that sweet, sweet soulful voice. chokes me up every time.
- singingsox, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3The Dixie Chicks were very impressive.
Anyone can just sing the Star Spangled Banner alone, but they took it into 3 part harmony. It's a lot harder to sing with two other people and do a performance than just yourself. So many new things come into play: balance, blend, everyone matching articulations and vowels. Not saying necessarily it's easy to sing along, but new elements are introduce with a group.
Those were pretty difficult harmonies too.
Kudos to them: a "popular" artist with real musical talent.
Whitney's performance was incredible too. I WISH I had that voice. - EricCiccone, on 08/25/2008, -0/+3A much better article with much better renditions http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/cover-war ...
The Grateful Dead and Phish sing it the best! -
