- wildest, on 11/16/2008, -1/+30What is it with knife crime in London?
- Thinkerofthings, on 11/16/2008, -1/+24Music business is cut throat
- scabbers, on 11/17/2008, -0/+20"Intensify Youth, a project aimed at combating knife crime, was just about to present an award at 10pm, when a fight broke out among around 30 people and other guests were forced to take cover under tables."

FACE PALM - chase001, on 11/17/2008, -6/+26Rap and Hip Hop are as fake as wrestling and attracts fans with a similar lack of intellect.
- jggube, on 11/16/2008, -1/+21Gun control is strict and access to firearms is hard (can't go to a Walmart to pick up a gun, for example), so the alternative is knives.
- colonelbuckshot, on 11/17/2008, -1/+18It's mainly a problem within the black communities of South London. Most areas are alright.
- dfross, on 11/17/2008, -0/+16The phrase "triple stabbing" makes it sound like some combo move or something.
Up, Right, Low Punch, 15 years for violent assault.
(as if. probably 3 months probation. we have a serious knife crime problem here in the uk because the laws are too lax on violent crime) - Bowd99, on 11/17/2008, -3/+16What language are you speaking? :)
- CoryTrevor, on 11/17/2008, -0/+12I bet most serial killers are white men. Is that racist? Grow up people. Being comfortable when people point out the realities of race is how you'll overcome racism.
- d2002, on 11/17/2008, -0/+10That's pretty urban all right.
- Murdats, on 11/17/2008, -1/+11a much, much more preferable alternative.
- Wakers, on 11/17/2008, -0/+9Both of the people above are spot on :)
If you live in a smaller city or in the countryside all you ever hear on the news is "stabbing in London". This has been the worst year I can remember for stabbings, and still its not a patch on any American city of equal size. - Finalreminder, on 11/17/2008, -7/+15Not read the story but I bet 10 quid they're black?
Is it racist if it's true? - roodammy44, on 11/17/2008, -2/+10It's not entirely a black problem.
It's a chav problem.
We have a fast breeding underclass in the UK of violent chavs. They number millions now.
Chavs tend to be any colour or race but all have grown up with violence and all hang around in large gangs.
The worst places are south london and east london. - Palmer586, on 11/17/2008, -0/+7Not to mention how low the number of stabbings is here in the UK when compared to the number of shootings in countries where handguns and automatic rifles are legal for the public to own.
- producemedia, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6You clearly haven't been to Holloway road on a Friday night
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -0/+6In the urban areas, which unfortunately are where the media is based. The vast majority of the country is completely safe and free from this sort of nonsense.
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -2/+8Not racist at all. It's just a guaranteed fact.
- FunkyWorm, on 11/17/2008, -1/+7I live on Holloway Road (and not just Friday nights!) and it's rare to go a week without seeing one of those police posters showing some poor seventeen year-old who's been stabbed and appealing for witnesses.
It's all about the hip-hop; If you're constantly after 'respect' and someone crosses you.....
Still - with a knife you can only kill one person, with a firearm it's possible to 'go postal' - I'm so glad civilians aren't allowed to carry guns in the UK. - Wakers, on 11/17/2008, -2/+8I think its just mainly a problem with London and Manchester (although other large city centre areas are getting worse), started in the black communities but to say its mainly their problem now is a bit harsh.
We have pretty good gun laws here, its not so easy to get a hold of a firearm (although it does happen, granted), but its far too easy still to get a hold of a knife. - fungke, on 11/17/2008, -1/+6Because not all "urban music" is necessarily of black origin. Still, it's a dumb label.
- lennybird, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5The way I look at it is, I'd rather being fighting fists vs knife than fist vs gun. When someone decides they want to kill you, even with the U.S.'s great 2nd amendment, you're not going to have your pistol holstered, locked and loaded, and ready to retaliate (most of us anyway...)
- alarion, on 11/17/2008, -0/+5I blame the rap music
- poidh, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4Apparently, "Murder on the Dancefloor" was being played at the time. However, this turned out to be far less funny than hoped when it was discovered that the victims were only injured.
- punkcat, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4see what you did in the title,
its "O" two not Zero two. - asgardshill, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4Just keepin' it real, folks.
- Frostek, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4They mentioned it as a possibility, but I don't think it was ever pushed as a serious counter-measure.
- poidh, on 11/17/2008, -1/+5I hate the name for that other event "Music of Black Origin" Awards. We're told that skin colour is never an issue. Except when it suits the powers that be.
- CoryTrevor, on 11/17/2008, -0/+4They do here in Germany.
- Cornea, on 11/17/2008, -2/+5It certainly isn't mainly a problem within the black communities of South London. More teenage stabbings have occurred north of the river this year than south of the river.
It is true to say that the victims of teenage knife crime are more likely to be black or asian than white. Only 3 of the 27 victims of teenage knife crime so far this year have been white.
However a far more glaring statistic is that only one of the victims hasn't been male. So it begs the question why colonelbuckshot didn't say it is a problem amongst the male communities in London.
The simple solution would be to only allow males out of their homes for one hour a day and ensure that they must be accompanied by a responsible female at all times. - inactive, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3Ban music!
- alexcroox, on 11/17/2008, -3/+6Guns for show, knives for a pro!
- asgardshill, on 11/17/2008, -1/+4His Noodly Appendage help us all if ceramic knives ever become popular with the stabbing public. They pass through metal detectors like crap through a goose.
- iamichi, on 11/17/2008, -2/+5There are two words in the name of that language... Do you know the last one?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_English - scabbers, on 11/17/2008, -2/+5They were talking about forcing kitchen knives to come without points. Seriously.
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -2/+5...because most of the rest of the country has a minimal black / asian population.
- alexmuller, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3http://alex.mullr.net/blog/2008/09/teenage-killing ...
It is my blog, but it's relevant. A map of teenage killings in London over the past year. - doktored, on 11/17/2008, -0/+3They used to have metal detectors they took them out.
I went through one for Metallica, bleeped away... They didn't care. A bit pointless really. - unre4l, on 11/17/2008, -4/+7Someone's always gotta ***** spoil it for everyone else, ain't they.
The massive massive part of urban music and urban culture is trying to disassociate itself from violence and crime and you got backwards people like these keeping it in the stereotype for ignorance. - GalacticRerun, on 11/17/2008, -3/+5Why black music? Because black people make and listen to it? It's just as non-black as it is non-urban.
- ZenFu, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2So people, what happens when there's a blanket ban on knives (including cutlery)?
People are going to turn to the next tool that happens to be just as lethal. It'll probably go something like hammers, chisels, screwdrivers and then rocks.
I'm SO ***** SICK of how britain's government and media sees fit to ban tools that are useful to the everyday civilian (i personally use knives at work for cutting wire-etc. Now, thanks to all these ***** laws, i can't even carry my damn leatherman in public, else the police can charge me for possession of a deadly weapon). The real problem here is the youth culture of today, the media and all these politically correct ***** laws. Hell, you can't even properly discipline your children without child protective services turning up at your door (odds are because some nosy neighbor has called em).
Here's what needs to be done.
1: Every parent should be given the authority back to smack their kids. Hell, i was hit with a feather duster, belt and anything else my mom had to hand when i ***** up. It taught me respect (and never to ***** with my parents).
2: The police should stop coddling minority communities. They want to destroy each other? Let them have the tools to do it. When the dust settles, we'll move into cheaper properties. NOTE THAT THIS METHOD ALSO HELPS PEOPLE GET ON THE PROPERTY LADDER.
3: The minimum age for prosecution with a weapon should be based on intelligence, not age. If a kid's smart enough to know what he's doing when he stabs someone, he should go down for it. Regardless of whether he's 9 or 30.
4: The media needs to stop glamorising weapons, and this starts by educating people in the simple fact that rappers write songs to make money. They don't give a ***** about the lyrics. As long as it sells, they're happy. Hell, P. Diddy (a supposed gangsta rapper), when told he had a gay following, said he was honored. That right there is proof that even the "toughest gangsta" doesn't give a *****, as long as he's making money.
5: Kids prosecuted or arrested for weap-related offences should be given a small amount additional time in max-level prisons with the simple message that if they keep down this path, they'll end up being raped in the ass and known as somebody's bitch.
6: The police need to become more brutal when they catch chavs with knives. As soon as the word gets out that cops are beating people down caught with weaps, no one'll want to carry anymore.
7: Everybody knows that prevention of something only leads to it becoming more famous (tom cruise's scientology vid is a prime example of this). Instead of running campaigns to ban knives, start putting the money into youth programs or something that actually does something useful for the community. We all know that carrying is stupid. The only reason chavs do it is because they think it's cool. Take away that view and watch how quickly all this ***** stops.
Rant over.
Oh, and while i don't carry a weap here, I've got no problem killing someone who trys to mug me with his own weapon. If you're going to carry a blade, best not drop it when people who know how to use it are around. - Cornea, on 11/17/2008, -3/+5I don't know about black but I would guarantee 100% they were male. When are we going to do something about these men who are wrecking our once civilised country - lock up all men is what I say!
- MEGACAMZ, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3I can bet my house that he was either black, or it was a white person stabbing the black people.
- colonelbuckshot, on 11/17/2008, -6/+8The British media made up the term "urban music". Why not just call it "black music"?
- poison101, on 11/17/2008, -1/+3Its not rap music as such. is more of this whole new hip hop scene. Rap music is a big genre, its only kill people for respect objectifying women hip hop "gangsta" rap. its this culture that has been fermented in the US infecting the youth in poverty in London. Im not blaming America, im blaming the hip hop artists who glamorise violence as being cool. and to gain respect you have to act like a total prick and act aggressively if someone talks to you or isnt from your estate or other ***** reasons they find. Music is part of it but i would say its a certain culture. hip hop used to be way more peaceful. Im glad i dont live in a part of the UK by you are judged and respected by how much of a knob cheese you are to people.
- inactive, on 11/17/2008, -0/+2I was there last Friday night - no trouble whatsoever. There was the usual stabbing at Archway, and a gay bashing at Highbury Corner, but the Holloway Road was OK. There was a big Police presence
- btgoss, on 11/19/2008, -0/+1Rap music and Hip Hop culture is a culture of death and violence. That is how it is sold, and that is what it promotes.
It is different from the packaged evil/satanism of some Heavy Metal, in that it actually has taken a much stronger hold on the people who follow it. It has moved past the cosplay level, and has actually become a culture. Until that changes, there will be more of this type of crime. Simply because it is expected, and accepted.
It is the same way that smoking pot leads to heavier drugs and crime in the states. With pot being illegal you are forced to associate with criminals to get it, which can lead to being sucked into the criminal culture. The pot didn't do that per se, but being exposed to that culture is what does it.
That is why it is important to be around positive people. It is catchy. - petala, on 11/17/2008, -1/+2300 people?! Not spartan? dayum
- punkcat, on 11/17/2008, -1/+2you can get a gun, but it has to be a hunting rifle.
