- granolajoe, on 11/07/2008, -0/+23Finally, Les Paul gets the respect he deserves
- Surferess, on 11/07/2008, -0/+21Gotta lotta love for Les Paul! Glad he's going into the Hall!
- AmyVernon, on 11/07/2008, -0/+18He DEFINITELY deserves the honor.
- Trekhawk, on 11/07/2008, -0/+14His contributions go far beyond the electric guitar. Those in the recording industry at large owe a great deal of respect to this man. And further dugg for being from S.E. Wisconsin.
- lfrankow, on 11/07/2008, -0/+9Les invented music as it is heard today.
Without overdubbing and multitracking... uh... you do the math. - nodehopper, on 11/07/2008, -1/+10Not only did Les Paul invent the BEST electric guitar, but he was one of the first to start doing multi-track recording. He started with a couple of reel to reel tape decks and added layer upon layer to make completely innovative music.
Absolutely one of the biggest inventors / innovators in the history of Music. - thegreeneyedkri, on 11/07/2008, -0/+8Les Paul is amazing. I saw him at the Iridium a few months ago and it was one of the best concerts I have ever been to. When you watch him play it is nothing less than watching an artist at work. You can tell how much he loves playing, plus he's still so spunky for his age! He was joking all night.
A living legend.
Recording wouldn't be what it is today without his innovations. - murk, on 11/07/2008, -0/+7it's from his first name Lester.
- tryferos, on 11/07/2008, -0/+7I remember hearing this years ago and just grabbed it off of his wikipedia entry:
"But his fame almost came to an end when he was hurt in a near-fatal car accident. After the crash, doctors told Paul that they'd have to set his arm such that he would not be able to bend it again. He had them position his arm at a ninety degree angle so he could still play guitar."
Guitar Hero indeed. - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6How would you like that title..."Father of the Electric Guitar" good for you man!
- vandy, on 11/07/2008, -1/+7"Less"
- viper22, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6I am actually suprised that he is just now getting inducted. Rock & Roll wouldnt be what it is now without his ideas. On top of that, hes an awesome musician.
- reuscel, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6I agree with you for 5 out of 6 of those, but the Beach Boys totally deserved it. Brian Wilson was one of the best songwriters in the history of rock. Pretentious and crazy, no doubt, but who else could have put together "Pet Sounds"? And he also introduced the rock world to the theremin.
- freehunter, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6I have to give props to Fender, I play a Stratocaster, but I would say Les Paul has done more for the guitar world than Leo Fender.
- Nighthawke, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6They get done inducting the Father of The Electric Guitar, the show will go downhill for the rest of it.
Keep in mind that he was also Father of The Multitrack Recording Systems. His crowning achievement was the 3" 8 track reel to reel system commissioned by him to Ampex. Other recording achievements were phasing effects, tape delay and delay effects such as sound on sound.
Bing Crosby gave Les an Ampex Model 200 reel to reel unit, and within hours he had given birth to the idea of multitrack recording.
Les Paul does not deserve no less of his technical achievements that has made studio recording the way it is today. - MalarkeyPN, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6That's pretty sweet. This guy made the first electric guitar out of a 2x4 and called it "The Log." He still plays shows weekly even though his hand is all cramped up like a crab claw.
Living legend. - drmobutu, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5Les Paul also invented multi-track recording.
- dafragsta, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5I have 3 Epi Les Pauls and a guy who should've known better picked one up and said "I guess you like Lay Pauls huh?" I'd never even HEARD anyone make that mistake before and it blew my mind. Is it Lay Claypool?!
- Derter, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4This guy is a living monument and he's still playing!
- jlimon, on 11/07/2008, -3/+7It's funny he's holding a Gretsch guitar in that picture..
- 4321234, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4I met Les Paul personally in around 1973. I had been playing guitar about a year, but had a couple of friends in a local bar's house band. I went into a guitar shop in Courtenay B.C. Canada because one of my buddies needed something there. Turned out the shop owner was a friend of Les Paul, and he had stopped to visit. The shop owner, Les Paul, my buddies and myself sat there on stools while he played a couple of tunes. I had the ringside seat, front and center.
- jhydez71, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4Actually, its a Gibson Les Paul Recording Custom. They made them in the 1970s.
http://www.modernguitars.com/imagefiles/lpcarnegie ... - exboxer, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4Bow to the inventor.
- tomarocco, on 11/07/2008, -0/+3You are small and weak.
- bluesman3535, on 11/07/2008, -0/+3Any invention that can stand on its own with few changes retaining popularity 60 years later is amazing. Keith Richards remarked on solid body guitars being perfect from the start. Hats off to Les (and Leo!)
- scottysmith, on 11/08/2008, -0/+2this guy is without doubt the best thing that ever happened to guitars and rock n roll, almost every great guitarist owns a les paul..or 20, i would not be without mine.
- watcht, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2About ***** time, you'd think he'd have gotten this nomination long ago.
- samyoungguitar, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2That hall should be named after him.
- dykast, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2For anyone who wants to know more about this mans great accomplishments. This documentary about him is awesome.
http://www.lespaulfilm.com/ - GiggleStick, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2A Whole Lotta Love, perhaps?
- BrokenVisage, on 11/07/2008, -1/+2What about granny shifting and not double cutching?
- BruisedGhost, on 11/08/2008, -0/+1Leo popularized the electric guitar, that why the strat is the most commonly copied
- Greengoo, on 11/07/2008, -3/+4Les Paul? Give us MOR Paul!
- moveeasy, on 11/13/2008, -0/+1Isn't it inspiring to read about a person with such extraordinary talent? You know, I wonder how different the world looks to him, compared to what I see when I look around.
- VicTheKnife, on 11/07/2008, -1/+2I really hope that you aren't knocking The Supremes...
- mnvkng76, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1thought the same thing. At least this Les deserves to be in there
- leahface, on 11/08/2008, -0/+1About dang time.
- xxpor, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1I go to Case Western, and they are the co-hosts of this event. I can't stop hearing about it from the administration. Anyway, here's more info:
http://www.case.edu/events/amm/ - theduffster89, on 11/07/2008, -1/+2guy made some of the best guitars
glad to see hes getting honored - DantheMan1107, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1I don't think it's a Gretsch, if anything it's the Les Pulverizer, a guitar he made himself. See: http://www.bigsbyguitars.com/news3.html
- tomarocco, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1I prefer the broad spray pattern of blood created by the Les Paul while it's bashing your skull in. The SG's is too narrow.
- whosmatt, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1Leo Fender invented the electric bass. Les Paul invented the electric guitar.
- tomarocco, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1In your face, Leo Fender!
- DomoDigital, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1Dugg up for lame joke that actually made me smile.
- petebot, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1Yeah! I saw him there 2 weeks ago. He's a natiural showman, and had us all laughing between songs. It was totally awesome.
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1He is definitely one of my personal heroes! He's a geek!
- drub, on 08/13/2009, -0/+1Paul's influence on music (and video, which also relies on multitrack editing) is deeper than we can possibly imagine. He was definitely one of the greats.
Overview and a link to a good video interview: http://www.videosurf.com/blog/daily-surf-report-mu ... - jlimon, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1Ahh, I see. Thank you for pointing that out.
Anytime I see a bigsby bridge I think Gretsch. - FreeTalkLIve, on 11/07/2008, -0/+1So is Angus Young. That's why he plays a light wieght SG.
The SG is a much better guitar. - robbiedo, on 11/08/2008, -0/+1Leo Fender might disagree.
