Welcome to 3 days ago. - paulsabo, on 12/27/2008, -8/+18I prefer rock, personally
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+10i know, must've have been hard work to whittle it down to so few..
- paidhima, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8Thanks for breaking that down for us. I'm sure all of us white folk rock lovers thought that he was suggesting we would literally need a space shuttle to get to him.
- Subhazard, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8If you guys want -good- rap, which is never advertised or shown in mainstream media, I suggest looking towards alternative genres.
Some good artists to check out:
Aceyalone
Dr. Octagon (one of my favorites... he's insane, so you should probably buckle up before listening to him)
Styles of Beyond
Quarashi (Icelandic rap group, they're pretty good. Baseline is one of my favorite tracks by them. ***** Bjork)
MF Doom - sadisticmind, on 12/27/2008, -1/+7because it's better. its not about the "bitchz" or "Bling" or "thug life"
its about Sex Drugs and rock N roll. - ProjectGSX, on 12/27/2008, -9/+15*****. Everyone knows rap music is real. Just like there is some chick named Lucy who lives in the sky and owns lots of diamonds.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -1/+7Rap is in the ditch.
The only decent rapper to come along lately is... Bushido... a freekin North-African German. - inactive, on 12/27/2008, -9/+14People just do not understand hip-hop/rap.
Sorry to say but im 99% sure that everyone above me (stating rap is trash etc etc) are just white kids who listen to rock.
I listen to A LOT of ish, death metal to coldplay to rap (the good and bad) to trance.
You guys just don't get it.
In the blog he refers to Lil Wayne's 3Peat. Confused he says,
says his cash is "so old it's growing white hair" (despite being on a label called Young Money), and claims that to get on his level, one would need "a space shuttle or a ladder that's forever."
First of all, if he points that out (about YM) he doesn't even get what Young Money is. Second, how do you not understand such a simple meta? He's saying hes so high on his own level that you cannot touch him.. and to even get to him you would need a space shuttle (highest flying) or a ladder that goes forever.. because he is just THAT high.
Simple as that, I break it down for the white folk.
<-- not black
Now continue to wear black and rock out. - drewski526, on 12/27/2008, -2/+71). Cooking By The Book
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJ0AhVyKCLY - Subhazard, on 12/27/2008, -1/+6Yeah, a lot of the rap you hear on the radio is -crap-. It's all marketing, they all got there by following the same image and knowing who to call pretty much.
The best MC's are in the shadows, playing tunes and dropping beats at their fancy and not really giving a damn about how successful they are.
Check out MF Doom or J DIlla. (JDilla did a lot of the bump beats in Adult Swim (those 5 second pictures with music playing, usually it's a picture of a city, or a building) ) - DDRSkata, on 12/27/2008, -0/+5If we're listing good rap, also:
-Aesop Rock
-Immortal Technique
-Sage Francis
-Atmosphere - strebalicious, on 12/27/2008, -0/+4Ha, next you'll be telling me Johnny really didn't play fiddle against the devil.
- secondfiddle, on 12/27/2008, -3/+7Adult nursery rhymes to a dog humping a bucket.
- tikal2k, on 12/27/2008, -3/+7This article is ridiculous, everybody knows the songs are supposed to be stories. The problem is when idiots can't tell fact from fiction.
NEWS ALERT: Mick Jagger really wasn't born in a cross fire hurricane, OH NOES - andrewlotta, on 12/27/2008, -1/+4No Arab Money?
- Khanvalescent, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Race has nothing to do with this, rap lyrics have been spiraling down to theater of the absurd.
Combine this with increasing reliance on technological crutches--I'm looking at you Auto-Tune--and I think many people, even rap fans, are scratching their heads at how some songs are becoming so popular. - DDRSkata, on 12/27/2008, -1/+4I prefer rock (particularly punk, metal, and indie for the most part), but I like some rap. Good rap. Immortal Technique, Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, Atmosphere, MF Doom, Aceyalone, Wu Tang Clan, NWA, etc. ***** top 40 club rap is about all the stuff you said, but good rap isn't.
- Chronchitis, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Dugg for Dr. Octagon that guy is sick
also check out People Under the Stairs - Subhazard, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3Will do. Check out JDilla.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3oh my god.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3That entire song was a dis to Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and an imitation of his form of humor, right down to the fake accent. It's actually kind of genius, if the subjectiveness of comedy yields to such terms.
Also, that single was from 2005. Time flies. - sk8ngame, on 12/27/2008, -0/+3the radio is where rap music goes to die.
- Korycam, on 12/27/2008, -1/+4thanks yo you are completely right.
people have to open their minds and accept other music for what it is. - thizzlebot, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2Music of today is sad ;(
- bipolarruledout, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2I have nothing against rap per say but It just feels like they are selling an aesthetic... which I guess is fine; there is a reason why people go and see Broadway shows.
- Subhazard, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2I will check them out, thankyou.
- Bananaboy8000, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2I haven' t heard of any of these people. Serves me right for not listening to TOP 40 stations. I can't believe I've been missing out on all this talent.
- hwood, on 12/27/2008, -4/+699.9% of it is BS
- NerdwithSwag, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2You must be looking in the wrong places for Hip-Hop, What about Blu & Exile? Lupe Fiasco? Jay Electronica? Q-Tip's rap resurgence with "The Renaissance" which is easily the best album of the year. Mos Def's still doing it, and so is Talib Kweli. Even Souls of Mischeif is back at it... Dig a little deeper, Hip-Hop isn't dead, it's patrons are!
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -0/+2No kid, it's the fact that you cannot/do not know how to follow it.
But you're welcome, im sure there's a good deal of ya'll that I helped. :D - WiretapStudios, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2HAHAHA
- Chronchitis, on 12/27/2008, -1/+3Bob Dylan is the original rapper just listen to the song Hurricane
- Azathothh, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2Hip-hop sucks
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -1/+3Dude, you need some pussy.
- DDRSkata, on 12/29/2008, -0/+2I'm black.
- soulcontrol, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Blu & Exile's "Below the Heavens" is one of the best hip-hop albums I've heard in a long time.
- AlpineStars777, on 12/27/2008, -0/+2Usher can sing and he's got great beats. It's unfair to put him up there with some of these other jackasses.
- ignacious, on 12/27/2008, -1/+2What does a Minneapolis based weekly alternative know about rap? I have heard some pretty terrible rhymes from Slug and the rest of the Rhymesayers Collective, and they are the only thing coming out of Minnesota.
- n8o8, on 12/27/2008, -1/+2Q-tip's whole album is amazing. I can't stop listening to the renaissance.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1Don't listen to Atmosphere's new stuff. He is sorta going mainstream and his rap is getting weak. I like his albums God Loves Ugly, Seven Travels, the Headshots Se7en... The new album is Meh at most
Check out also:
-Flobots- yes handlebars is played out but the rest of album is great!
-Visionaries
-Beat Junkies
-Murs
-Binary Star
-Zion I
-Eydea and Abilites
-Pete Philly
-Buck65
-Cunninlynguists
-Solilaquists of Sound
Lastly can't forget about Jurassic 5 - volume909, on 01/03/2009, -0/+1Let me rewrite that for you: Usher can't sing but his producers have great beats.
- pastel7, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1Yup, hip hop died.....in US.
- spoonchucks, on 12/28/2008, -0/+1KEBERT XELA!
- michaelczhang, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1What the.
- HalsMyPal, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1they probably picked them by lottery or by turning on the radio.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -0/+1Well, rap is like any other type of music on the Top 40 stations. The ***** on the radio is usually good for dancing and playing in the clubs. But there IS good rap out there if you look. It doesn't have to be the most underground *****, granted a lot of the underground music IS awesome, but at the risk of sounding like a broken record (as this is probably the third thread I've put this in), if you throw on one of Eminem's records and actually listen to the stuff that isn't on the radio, it's mind blowing.
- DDRSkata, on 12/29/2008, -0/+1@solid12345: I completely disagree. Aesop is definitely one of the best rappers out there. Especially on Labor Days. And I love the line in Daylight where he says, "Life's not a bitch, life is a beautiful woman/You only call her a bitch cuz she won't let you get that pussy/Maybe she didn't feel y'all shared any similar interests/Or maybe you're just an ***** who couldn't sweet talk the princess." Seriously. Amazing rapper, in my humble opinion.
@SpankkBankk: Agree on Atmosphere's new stuff. One thing I just realized: neither of us mentioned Wu Tang Clan. -
