- scoottie, on 07/05/2009, -3/+78That had to be one of the worst written articles i have ever read. It was like a 5 year old writing about their summer trip.
- branndon, on 07/05/2009, -0/+41During high school, I had to interview my parents. One of the questions I asked is if you had to pick one song to describe you, what would you pick. My dad said "Freebird". He was a drug addict his entire life and only cleaned up a few years ago (way after my interview). I never listened to Freebird before that interview, but now it's my favorite song, so much emotion behind it.
- crash331, on 07/05/2009, -2/+41In the South, I don't think it's a heckle. I think they genuinely want to hear Freebird.
- supakoopa, on 07/05/2009, -5/+44The article forgot to mention the most important role Freebird played. Being the last song in Guitar Hero II.
- thewhits, on 07/05/2009, -1/+38I was in a Reggae/funk band, and we would get people hollering at us to play Freebird. So we figured out a reggae version that kicked ass.
Then the band broke up. - Wreckage, on 07/05/2009, -6/+36I still say "Simple Man" is their best song.
Not to discount Free Bird though.
Skynryrd!!!! - adrian67, on 07/04/2009, -14/+41One of my all time favourite songs.
- dgreaney, on 07/05/2009, -0/+24It's not always a joke. It's one of the best songs in the history of rock, and offers one of the most satisfying emotional journeys any song offers; the audience calling for it originally meant and fundamentally means that the experience provided by the musicians at hand may have been good, maybe even great, but that there is a level of emotional exhaustion, of catharsis yet to be reached--which Freebird delivers. That snarky persons considering themselves to be hipsters shout it ironically simply reveals the emotional inadequacy of that identity or posture--that one is reduced to mocking what one cannot simply honestly open oneself to because of a lack of courage.
- CrimsonFlash, on 07/05/2009, -3/+26I yelled it at an organ player the other day. Now I feel bad.
- zomgwaffles, on 07/05/2009, -0/+21things that while never get old to yell
1) FREEBIRD!!
2) Do a barrel roll - stubear, on 07/05/2009, -0/+19I love Simple Man and was annoyed to see it used in an ad to sell some crappy swill water claiming to be beer. Lynard Skynard is definitely an underrated band mostly due to ignorance of anything from the south (bordering on bigotry) and Freebird.
- supermanly, on 07/05/2009, -0/+19Neil Young?
- mrjit, on 07/05/2009, -9/+26I'll bet that story sounded simply marvelous in your head.
- GeekNurse, on 07/05/2009, -0/+16This is an instance where I can write, "Cool story, Bro" and actually mean it.
- mattmollysdad, on 07/05/2009, -1/+16my favorite song of all times and I made the terrible mistake of playing it while taking my best friend, (my dog) to be put down. That was over 2 years ago and I can't ever play that song again. The song belongs to that dog. RIP Wil
- Burrito, on 07/05/2009, -0/+153) Show your *****.
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -1/+15No kidding. I was reading the section Birth of 'Freebird' and was waiting for him to get to the point. And I still have no clue what a plane crash has to do with that song, or how they died "living that song". Or what that plane crash has to do with Alabama and how the south will rise again.
- pagit, on 07/05/2009, -0/+14Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, RIP
- crash331, on 07/05/2009, -0/+13some loser?
- stubear, on 07/05/2009, -1/+14"People forget that was a meaningful song," said Tim Tuten, owner of North Side pub/music venue The Hideout. "It was about someone who wasn't going to accept what was doled out. It may sound goofy, but that was a real sentiment back then."
People have forgotten this sentiment these days. - drew101, on 07/05/2009, -0/+12i had to scroll down further than i thought i would to find that comment
- MonkeyNews, on 07/05/2009, -1/+12I was never really into rock music - but the first time I heard the song it hit me like a ton of bricks. I was absolutely mesmerised by it. The guitar solo just floored me.

- inverselogic, on 07/05/2009, -0/+8When Stephen Lynch was in Portland someone heckled "FREEBIRD!". He called him an unimaginative *****..then proceeded to sing freebird...
- yournightmare, on 07/05/2009, -0/+8Oh yea--we (people from Jacksonville) will take credit for Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, and .38 Special, but NOT Fred Durst.
- Choobie, on 07/05/2009, -3/+10Which is pretty much the only exposure most people in college or younger will ever get of this song.
(ZOMG IT WAS IN GUITAR HERO!! I LOVE LYNARD SKYNARD! What else do they play?) - NOFXY, on 07/05/2009, -1/+8i guess i dont get it. if someone yelled out freebird at me i'd play it :/ its a good song. am i missing something? i dont think people are being sarcastic when they yell it out. oh well...
- AmazingSteve, on 07/05/2009, -0/+7You ***** owe us all a BIG apology for Fred Durst.
- Choobie, on 07/05/2009, -0/+7I didn't realize that having something important to say was proportional to the articles dugg/comments made ration. I better start digging more articles...
Also, bury. - crash331, on 07/05/2009, -0/+7Not if you live in the south. Skynyrd is a staple.
- KingWilson, on 07/05/2009, -1/+8ron paul?
- keonnerod, on 07/05/2009, -0/+7Okay...i thought it was just me. But what the hell was that article about?
- pagit, on 07/05/2009, -0/+7The Guess Who cast the against vote?
cool ! - Bananaboy8000, on 07/05/2009, -0/+7I wish I had a cool story that links me to 'Freebird'.
- yournightmare, on 07/05/2009, -0/+6I live in Jacksonville. I grew up here. Here's the story of how Judy Van Zandt came to open Freebird Live at the beach:
The building that houses Freebird Live used to be called Sloppy Joe's, which was owned by the same people that owned the one in Key West (Hemmingway's favorite bar). Artimus Pyle ended up being the house drummer there, but he got fired for snorting blow in the bathroom. Sloppy Joe's was having financial problems at this time, so Judy bought it and turned into the Freebird. Incidentally,. nobody ever shouts "freebird" there. - Sherman901, on 07/05/2009, -0/+6Hahahaha
Epic song, not just the music, but the fact that it was supposed to be In The Garden of Eden and the dude was just too ***** up to get it right. - dsmx, on 07/05/2009, -0/+6The guitarist.
- pittpat, on 07/05/2009, -4/+9I don't care how "lame" it's supposed to be, I still yell it at every show I go to.
- CeeJayDK, on 07/05/2009, -0/+5Yesterdays generation had Freebird .. this generation have Rick Astleys "Never Gonna Give You Up"
- carterx, on 07/05/2009, -1/+6Lynyrd Skynyrd-Free Bird-BBC 1975
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkTQUtx818w - kenlaw, on 07/05/2009, -0/+5Saw Molly Hatch do Freebird about 29 years ago and it was fantastic. I saw them at a small ice hockey rink in Columbia MO for $6. It turned out to be a three hour show that ended with "We don't know any more songs".
- scarwars, on 07/05/2009, -0/+5Weirdly enough I always want to play GTA SA when I hear that song
- uncoveror, on 07/05/2009, -2/+6If you want to taunt a band, don't yell "Freebird!", yell "Do Stonehenge!".
- dsmx, on 07/05/2009, -1/+5Which one?
- inactive, on 07/05/2009, -2/+6i agree completely
- KibblesnBitts, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4Cool story bro?
- TonySki, on 07/05/2009, -0/+4No Way. Freebird will never die.
- KJGJ, on 07/05/2009, -1/+5There's always the obligatory douche bag. Never been to a concert in which someone hasn't said it.
