+Digg - forumgirl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Its simplicity is both its strength and its weakness.
It's great that all of that information is packed into a concise resource. The problem, however, is that some of it is inaccurate, or is distributed in such a way that it seems overly simplified, but is in fact just distorted.
The explanation of Neapolitan chords, for example, is really misleading. It's not until the chapter on Neapolitan usage that we learn that they're generally found in 1st inversion. Also, the explanation of odd meter as being a collection of simple/compound beats gets the idea across - but using terminology that NO one uses. And the simple/compound meter explanation is suspect at best.
Good stuff here. But reality-check this stuff against other music theory resources before claiming it as the be-all-end-all. - apollos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is incredible...
Uber-digg. - happbando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0agreed, a teacher is the best way to go, especially from the start. however, a guitar player without lessons who knows his theory is still better than a guitar player without lessons who has no idea. bass players still pwn all y'all though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Beware the RIAA and MPA that have gone ***** over this kind of site.
- rc55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0osuadh: Your opinion is minority.
Fantastic resource! Bravo! - Trepan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I would still recommend music lessons. I've played guitar for over 12 years, and there's nothing like a good teacher in the beginnings of your endeavour. It's hard to teach physical movements with books and pictures or drawings, or even animations. Nothing like the real thing that you can see from any angle.
This is a good supplement, but for the first year I think everyone should have someone to teach you how to play the instrument physically. - aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i think music is ridiculously hard. i wish i knew how to play the piano!
- Durinthal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As a music student in college, I've had this site bookmarked for more than a year (and downloaded the standalone version). It's great for reviewing theory.. in fact, about a week ago some friends and I were using the seventh chord ear trainer to help study for finals.

I'm sure you are excited but I'm getting a bit of an info-mercial vibe from your post... :) - jiminoc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"known about this for years and its boring as heck."
wow you're extra cool than. thanks for telling us about something we couldn't care less about. - jamsea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0:P Man I should of put this on digg! I found this site a month aog by googling music theory :)
- Subtonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where's the lesson on common tone diminished 7ths, Augmented 6ths, and atonal music analysis? Doesn't even touch Schenkerian analysis...nor have I, I would take that lesson. ;-)
Very cool ear training. I've got to work on my minor 6ths and 7ths. I have one song for just about each interval. The Tritone is the Dilbert/Forbidden Zone theme, the minor 7th is Airwaves by Kraftwerk. - toasterwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nothing i already don't know
- ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Every time I have given someone lessons, I have pointed them to this site. Should have thought to put it on Digg. Now, if I would just stop giving free lessons to cute girls...
- brinkzor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i went to high school with this guy, i've been hearing about his music theory website for years, weird
- ryanmeadows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My band teacher trained us using this last year, it was awesome.
- saifrc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've also known about this for years, but never thought to submit it to Digg. I always instantly recommended this site to anyone trying to learn how to read music, or valve combinations for the trumpet, or basic chord progressions. I'm glad someone finally submitted it, because it's clear from the comments that many people find this useful, and the site deserves the attention.
Dugg, for awesomeness (despite being old news) - psbp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is really amazing. I've been wanting something like this for a long time now. Thankyou!
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh sweet! I'm bookmarking this for when I get my piano.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've played guitar for years... but I cant read music... until now!!!
- honeycut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I studied music at college - and this really is a good tool.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude, this thing is awesome, thanks for sharing it with us.
- evizaer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've known about this for several years. I'm surprised there isn't more of a backlash in the "this is old!" department.
I'll digg it, though, because it's worth a visit for sure. - Tricky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At first I thought this was completely stupid. Flash can't teach you to play piano. But, I guess it can teach you to learn to read and write the notes and teach you ear training... =)
+digg XD - RMuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet site.
I'm getting a guitar for X-Mas so somthing to help me along is always welcomed. - StephnDolenc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the webdesign on it is tight
- anachoret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i wish this had existed 6 years ago during my early music major days.
- RicciAdams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Trepan:
Absolutely! No website can compare to a real-life music teacher. If you want to learn piano or guitar, I encourage people to find a great local teacher. The site was originally designed for musicians who wanted to learn a bit more about how theory "works."
forumgirl:
Please let me know how you would improve the lessons on meter. Granted, "odd meter" is just one of many terms for the concept ("irregular meter", "asymmetrical meter", "complex meter", and "combination meter" also come to mind). Also, my use of simple/compound is fairly American-centric. The explanation of those terms can be very different in other countries - a fact I hope to address in the translations.
subtonic:
The lessons on common-tone 7ths and augmented 6th chords are planned. Currently, however, I am rewriting the trainers to take advantage of a new Flash-based music framework. After that, I will probably focus on lessons again. Regarding Schenkerian analysis, you might be interested in http://www.schenkerguide.com/ - jjjjjjb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0These lessons are indeed incredible, and Ricci Adams has been really generous in putting them up on his website for free. Great value!
It would be nice if there were different versions for non-US terminology (e.g. tones and semitones for steps and half-steps), but it's still very valuable nonetheless. - inactive, on 05/03/2009, -0/+0This is a really clever website.
Thanks for posting
http://www.the-piano-lessons-software-expert.co.uk ... - chabuhi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice elementary lessons -- a good way to learn basic musical elements without spending money on private lessons. I've been playing music professionally for nearly 20 years, and part of my income is through taking on the occasional student. Still, for the hobbyist without much experience, or the mere beginner, this is a useful site and is a great for those who might be intimidated at the thought of trying to learn music. Thumbs up.
- brinkzor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"This guy WORKS FOR APPLE! Probably."
yes, ricci does work for apple, - cfazzini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Half my friends are music education majors... this site might actually help make some sense of what the hell they are talking about!
Sweet stuff! - tarun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This guy WORKS FOR APPLE! Probably.
"In May of 2004, Adams graduated magna cum laude from Millikin University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. He currently lives and works in Cupertino, CA as a Software Engineer." - BLu3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My music teacher used the note trainer to train us on bass and treble clef in high school, it's a neat thing to use... personally I'd rather use tabs for guitar, though...
- nashville37, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a great resource for those students who need some extra practice outside of class. I've recommended it to many students. There's also a cool site www.thevirtualschoolofmusic.com that teaches music theory live over the net for those who were mentioning the need for a live music teacher for their learning, no matter the location.
- DESMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As a future music educator, I am amazed at this cite.
I will definitely use this in my classroom. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've been learning how to play the accordion by buying a used accordion and these music lessons are great. Very sweet site. If you're into accordions and you're cheap like me, there are used accordions for sale out there. http://www.trilokan.com/used-accordions/

http://www.learnpianoonline.com/welcome.html - xccliffy532, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok, if I had known about this site before I wouldnt have had to waste 4 semesters on music theory...I would have just done computer programming or something useful with my life...ugh...
- kance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty damn cool.
- soulsister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet- now all of my friends who give lessons don't have to work!
- petestv, on 02/20/2009, -0/+0that site rocks, founded more at http://www.bigguitarshop.com/blog/
- Drew7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a music major and a teacher suggested this site to help study. I have to say this site is pretty sweet.
