- TheIndigoSky, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1Actually the actual film would probably be allowed under fair use as "parody". The techno, on the other hand, not so much. Perhaps. (Copyright law is fuzzier than it should be)
- YourNameHere1, on 05/19/2009, -0/+0I really liked this video. A few years ago I saw a show about African American dance choreographers and dance troupes. Two of the choreographers that I really liked were Pearl Primus and Katherine Dunham (I also really liked Alvin Ailey).
Pearl Primus: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearl_Primus
- from wikipedia:
"Primus sojourn to West Africa has proven invaluable to students of African dance. She learned more about African dance, its function and meaning than had any other American before her. She was bale to codify the technical details of many of the African dances through the notation system she evolved and was also able to view and to salvage some “still existent gems of dances before they faded into general decadence” (Primus, from the Schomburg Library: Primus File, 1949). She has been unselfish in sharing the knowledge she has gained with others.
The significance of Primus’ African research and choreography lies in her presentation of a dance history which embraces ethnic unity, the establishment of an articulate foundation for influencing future practitioners of African dance, the presentation of African dance forms into a disciplined expression, and the enrichment of American theater through the performance of African dance."
Katherine Dunham: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katherine_Dunham
Katherine Dunham researched the roots of Caribbean sacred dance rituals (especially found in Hatti's Vodun and Voudou).
One of the things that I saw in this documentary was that some of these dances were taught as forms of martial arts (like capella dance fighting) to defend themselves from the weapon holding slave masters that they were still enslaved by. They were able to keep bits of their African regions religion, history, and culture through dance as well as train in tribal fighting forms for self defense.
- From this link: http://www.black-collegian.com/african/dunham9.sht ...
"While at school, Dunham attended a lecture on cultural anthropology where she was introduced to the concept of dance as a cultural symbol. The lecturer also mentioned that many present day dances had their origins in Africa. Fascinated, Dunham began to study the anthropological roots of dance, and after receiving the prestigious Rosenwald Foundation Fellowship, took her first field trip to the Caribbean in 1935 to study native dance. The Caribbean nations of Haiti and Jamaica provided Dunham with new insights, as the villagers who began to trust Dunham invited her to join some of their most sacred dance rituals. She would ultimately claim Haiti as her second home and even adopt their Vodum (or Voodoo) religion.
Returning to the United States in 1936, Dunham brought with her a wealth of ideas for exciting choreography, which she used in her new appointments as dance director for the Negro Federal Theatre Project in 1938, and the New York Labor Stage in 1939." - Makaveli2779, on 06/03/2009, -0/+0hahahaha wow.
