- tecunx, on 03/10/2008, -2/+71. Back in 1994 all the "alternatives" were actually ***** all over Nirvana's new In Utero album, which was probably a better album than nevermind.
2. Pearl Jam were actually more respected and selling more records than Nirvana, who had become over exposed
3. Even though Nirvana´s modern praise could be attributed to Kurt´s death (or assassination), we can not forget that a few months later Blind Melon´s lead singer tried to pull the same stunt. Proving to everyone that sometimes death can not be the best career move. What was that guy´s name?- almostspastic, on 03/10/2008, -1/+2don't play like that, Hoon was the man!

Alternative Pop/Rock is essentially a catch-all term for post-punk bands from the mid-'80s to the mid-'90s. Though there is a variety of musical styles within Alternative Rock, they are all tied together since they existed outside of the mainstream. In some ways, there are two waves of alternative bands, with Nirvana's success in 1991 acting as a dividing point. In the '80s, most alternative bands were on independent labels; if they were on majors, they didn't receive as much support as most of the label's mainstream acts. During the '80s, alternative included everything from jangle pop, post-hardcore punk, funk metal, punk pop, and experimental rock. After Nirvana's popularity in the '90s, alternative included all of these subgenres, but many of the edges were sanded off because the music was now being marketed as part of the mainstream. Hard rock and punk-derived music were more commercially successful than the left-of-center pop that dominated late-'80s alternative pop/rock, so alternative lost some of its quirkier tendencies in the '90s. Most experimental bands were relegated to indie rock.

(agreeing, just had to add).- zombies187, on 03/10/2008, -0/+3New Roman Times is an awesome record, if you have not heard it. Key Lime Pie is still my favorite.
- userperson, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2Key Lime & Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart are great records. If you consider when they came out ... they're probably still ahead of their time. I like some of the indie stuff too. I have 'Times', but haven't given it a great listen yet.
- zombies187, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Check out Monks of Dooms Meridian. It came out around the time of key lime, and is a great record.
- OpaqueMurdock, on 03/10/2008, -2/+18For a very long time "alternative music" was used as a catch all term to describe stuff that major record labels didn't know what to do with or wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole... then those exact same record companies borrowed the term and a "brand" was born. I get the humor of the comic... but I also gotta laugh at the irony of people allowing themselves to be sold pretty standard rock as "alternative". I happen to think Nirvana was a pretty great rock band... but not much about them was "alternative" from my perspective.
- brownsound00, on 03/10/2008, -0/+9It's true. Alternative isn't really a genre... its kind of just like calling a band "unclassifiable" because no one is really like them. But once more bands came out of Seattle (AIC, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, etc.) The grunge movement was formed, and Nirvana is THE Grunge band, (the founders, but not the best). Nickback is pop-rock or whatever.
Puddle of Mudd... i dont really know, and Bush, who i actually like, is post-grunge.
So none of these bands are really "alternative" heck, even tool was/is classified under alternative. There isn't really another band like tool, so they are just out there in their own "alternative" world. But they could really care less about what genre they are- Sryden42, on 03/10/2008, -4/+5Usually I hear Tool classified as progressive rock/metal along with King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, and a bunch of really terrible bands that just make noise with their instruments and pass it off as new and interesting.
- artliquide, on 03/10/2008, -0/+4I wouldn't call Porcupine Tree or King Crimson prog metal (perhaps neo-prog). I do call Tool prog metal though, as you say, along with Dreamtheater, Symphony X, etc.
- mahdaeng, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2Dream Theater FTW!
- OpaqueMurdock, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2Oh bud, you gotta suffer a bit before you can really enjoy those bands... its like fine wine. It all tastes a bit like crap till you develop the "taste". : )
- Stevethegreat, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2I don't know, but what's wrong with Porcupine Tree? I mean would you call Bob Dylan to be a noise-maker, there's certainly some quality there that cannot be reduced to mere aesthetic impressions. While I can't approve the wankery fest that some prog metal are reduced to, I can hardly say that is a noise-producing, in fact -I think- it's one of the few that keeps quality music to rock and metal.
- ggacid, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1"A Perfect Circle" is probably the only mainstream band that I've heard with a similar sound to Tool.
- precision256, on 03/10/2008, -0/+4ggacid, A Perfect Circle has the same lead signer Maynard James Keenan so that's why they sound similar if you were interested.
- ggacid, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Didn't know that actually, thanks for the info. Makes sense now!
- brownsound00, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1They also used to have Iha (guitarist of the smashing pumpkins). I don't know if they still do... but you could tell in some songs...
- Sryden42, on 03/10/2008, -4/+5Usually I hear Tool classified as progressive rock/metal along with King Crimson, Porcupine Tree, and a bunch of really terrible bands that just make noise with their instruments and pass it off as new and interesting.
- usingpond, on 03/10/2008, -0/+4Pretty much this. This is the only accurate comment I've seen so far.
- saxreturns, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2Well, you could say that the grunge movement as a whole was an alternative to the ***** rock/hair metal boom of the '80s. But yeah, you can't really call a band as famous as Nirvana 'alternative' in any general sweeping sense of the word.
- ConceptJunkie, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1It was pretty sad when "alternative" became synonymous with "platinum-selling". If I want something truly "alternative", I'll put on music like Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, The Microscopic Septet, Electrocution 250 or The Swingin' Tetrahedrons. They're alternative because they are truly different, not just "more of the same only worse".
- brownsound00, on 03/10/2008, -0/+9It's true. Alternative isn't really a genre... its kind of just like calling a band "unclassifiable" because no one is really like them. "Alternative" is such a lame phrase to use....im sure Mr. Cobain would love that title....;I - twertyto, on 03/10/2008, -1/+1I think it is trying to represent the fact that since Nirvana "alternative music" was been on the downfall.

- KevinRWright, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I have the same aqua Jagstang, those guitars are amazing.
- VelvetoneFusion, on 03/10/2008, -0/+7Kurt didn't really play strats.
- ComstockGordon, on 03/10/2008, -0/+3Well a good Fender is handmade over a period of several months and a Squier is cheap, outsourced version thrown together in Mexico in a considerably shorter amount of time with a lot of cheap assembly-line parts.
- augustwest30, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2My Squier says "Crafted in China"
- elhaf, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Yeah, fender puts stratocaster name on both, but it puts Fender only on the MIM and MIA strats (and Squier on the others). The Squier strats are made in Indonesia, China, etc. So the comic is right, and subtle.
- Teaboy, on 03/10/2008, -1/+3it's Fender that's comparable to Squier.

C'mon, guys, just because your music icon growing up was enough of a douche to off himself when he was taking off doesn't mean you have the rights to degrade the stuff I'm growing up with. Hell, he wasn't even that great, deal with it. I love some of his stuff, but Cobain and co. wasn't some gift from God or anything.
Aaaaaaaanyways... God damn Emo, cloggin' my radio tubes...- theysayjump, on 03/10/2008, -2/+11So we now have no right to degrade someone else's taste in music because you think Cobain was a douche?

- GinsuGuy585, on 03/10/2008, -8/+7To respond to goodbyeworld, Cobain did smoke. Funny enough, his reason for doing heroin was that we wanted a drug habit (to self medicate a chronic stomach pain.)

- zerosum, on 03/10/2008, -1/+5It's amazing how little people understand drug addiction to the point that they actually believed this story of Kurt's. This in no way takes away from his music or even his personal reputation, because I consider drug addiction to be a serious medical problem. When you are addicted to a drug as powerful as heroin, you will say crazy ***** like "Oh I purposely got hooked on it because my stomach hurt". Anyone that has had any experience with drug users or drugs themselves knows that this was just something Kurt was saying to the media so that he himself would not feel guilty... He was still a great guy and wrote great songs, but drugs definately took their toll on him. :/

The college radio station here never played either. Joy Division, The Cure, Depeche Mode, The Church, Ocean Blue, RHCP, Sex Pistols, TMBG, Pixies, That Petrol Emotion, Jane's Addiction, Nirvana, Coldplay, Radiohead, MGMT, Nickleback....one of these things is not like the other...

- ghandi69, on 03/10/2008, -4/+4So I went and popped Dolittle in my CD player to see if I just never noticed the relation.... but nope.. Debaser is a casual relaxing enjoyable little rock song.
Smells like the Teen spirit is one of the most epic, climatic, all out rock songs of all time....
They don't even share a beat....
I don't see the relation.- mggs, on 03/10/2008, -0/+3The relation is the Slow-Hard-Slow-Hard tempo that the Pixies pioneered and Nirvana spent their entire career emulating. Not that Smells wasn't a brilliant song.
- nitramlliw, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1actually, if you listen to ANY classical music, the same dynamic persists. its been around for ages, not that any of you ***** would care to notice.

- brownsound00, on 03/10/2008, -2/+5Its not as much about the music but about the time period. he took music that was so revolutionary at the time, and people were really looking for a way out of the glam rock stages of the 80s, that they looked at Cobain as a breath of fresh air. The Seattle scene was the complete opposite of Glam rock, and people loved it. So i guess you could say people were so happy, that they got a bit carried away. But Cobain (and Krist and Dave) did influence alot of other good bands/allow alot of other good bands to break free. If it wasn't for Nirvana, who knows if Alice in Chains, Soundgarden or other seattle bands would have gotten big. - employeeno5, on 03/10/2008, -13/+4These are/were all just pop bands. Nothing ever was or is alternative about any of these bands other than their lable at your local big box department store. The only real difference is Nirvana isn't completely artless garbage.
Still it's not much different than making a cartoon comparing the relative quality between The New Kids on the Block and NSync.- brownsound00, on 03/10/2008, -1/+2Depends what you mean by Pop. They were/are pop bands in the sense that it was Popular Music. Meaning, they got airtime on MTV (when it was a music channel), but even Led Zep is considered "Pop" just because it was Popular Music. So you can't really compare them to N Sync just by that.
- employeeno5, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1There's nothing wrong with something being pop music. In fact you're only boisturing my point.
Most of my favorite music is pop music including things like Led Zepplin and Nirvana. I think you missed what I was trying to say, (which may well be my fault).
I'm not comparing the those bands to NSync,
I'm comparing a snooty cartoon like that as being about as rediculous as trying to look clever and snooty making cartoon about boy bands. You can't take Bush more seriously than Puddle of Mud; whether one is better than the other or not (which I would say not) the only reason anyone's ever listened to them is because a marketing director decided to tell the kids it was cool on given week.
Feel free to disagree still, I just thought you misinterpreted my comment.- brownsound00, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1Oh ok, yep, i know what you mean there.

- Epicurious22, on 03/10/2008, -12/+3Nickleback and Puddle of Mud are alternative? Seem more like Pop Rock and Radio Rock to me.... I'd go with Cold then Breaking Benjamin, although I think those bands are good so I guess they wouldn't work for a de-evolution chart. Maybe Incubus then Sum 41...And wasn't Nirvana grunge? Damn labels
- JoeB4ever, on 03/10/2008, -1/+5you should really take a music history class
- Epicurious22, on 03/10/2008, -1/+0I have, It taught only Baroque, Classical, Reneissance, and Romantic era music, no modern. I'm curious to know what part of my comment is in need of a music lesson. The Nirvana grunge band remark was meant to be a joke about an overwhelming array of labels today. I would consider any grunge, new wave, electronica, post punk, Brit pop or any other deviation from the main musical genre's of rock, pop, jazz, blues, country as Alternative.

- Halsfield, on 03/10/2008, -1/+3@ chicken59 "good" music is an opinion, different people like different things, and there is no one band that every single person likes, get over it.
- WallnutBoy, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1What about Rick Astley!? Millions listen to his hit now!
- krisscofield, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6I like how your vocabulary magically upgraded from your last comment.
- JoeB4ever, on 03/10/2008, -1/+5you should really take a music history class
- inspecality, on 03/10/2008, -0/+9How about some credit to the author.
http://www.viruscomix.com/page328.html - etherreal, on 03/10/2008, -2/+13"Devolution" is more like it. Regardless, every couple of decades a breakthrough in music happens and it is fresh and fun (grunge, alternative, rock, etc) for a while and then the recording industry latches onto it like a tapeworm, runs it into the ground until the cycle starts all over again. We are just on the bottom of that cycle.
- HotDogBun, on 03/10/2008, -3/+4alternative and rap have been at the bottom of the cycle so long, there is really no longer a cycle. This is the garbage we are stuck with until the end of civilization. People have been wearing the same baggy pants and crisp size-to-fit-and tilted-to-the-side hats since i was in high school.. like 17 years ago.
One of you faggots has got to grow some balls and try something new, and no, i don't mean a new set of diamond earrings.- Sryden42, on 03/10/2008, -1/+2There is absolutely tons of music out there worth listening to, it's just sad that so few people bother looking. Sure, the ***** seems to naturally rise to the top, but it's pretty easy to ignore now that MTV & VH1 no longer play music.
- ConceptJunkie, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1Agreed. It's the 21st century. It's so easy to find new good music out there it's not even funny. Between and eMusic subscription and being on a couple of prog mailing lists, I find more stuff than I can afford to buy. Back in the 80's it was a much different story, but I was in college then and that was always a good place for discovering music.

- dxgg, on 03/10/2008, -1/+7If you're referring to the bastard in the White House, then I agree with you.
- Lemm, on 03/10/2008, -6/+4But if your referring to the band in the comic, the I disagree with you.
- brownsound00, on 03/10/2008, -2/+3Seconded.
Bush is probably one of the best post-Grunge bands out there
And I would also like to add.. if someone has some other obscure bands and prove me wrong, I would love to know.
- brownsound00, on 03/10/2008, -2/+3Seconded.
- SkaAgent11, on 03/10/2008, -1/+98Leave it to digg users to complain about the accuracy of a joke.

- leopardflames, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1and then there's the same response about what's wrong with the joke written five different ways at least three times each...funny since sometimes the inaccuracy is the funny part...

- mahdaeng, on 03/10/2008, -1/+1And that's where the similarity ends.
- therodersabides, on 03/10/2008, -2/+3Dugg for the lefty reversal. Kurt was left handed like Hendrix
- holyreality, on 03/10/2008, -2/+24alternative music didn't exactly start with nirvana.
- TremorX, on 03/10/2008, -1/+1No, but as the cartoon illustrates, it was the start of it turning to crap.
- TheHeat, on 03/10/2008, -11/+10Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I care for none of these bands. They're all overrated to me. Kurt hated himself for how "alternative" he was by the way ... verse, chorus, verse, so alternative indeed.
People sing praises where they're told to sing praises and don't question it. Nirvana were sort of pioneers, but lost their way. Nickelback is garbage, 100%. Puddle of Mudd are pathetic leeches on the teet of rock music as we know it. I don't really have much bad to say about Bush, but I don't listen to or like them really.
There are many problems with this chart.- inspecality, on 03/10/2008, -3/+9How did Nirvana lose their way? "In Utero" is certainly as good as "Nevermind", if not more authentic.
It sounds like you are just basing the band's talent off their mainstream success. - mrhedges, on 03/10/2008, -4/+10It's a ***** comic, get over yourself.
- inspecality, on 03/10/2008, -3/+9How did Nirvana lose their way? "In Utero" is certainly as good as "Nevermind", if not more authentic.
- jessebeans, on 03/10/2008, -1/+7this made me smile and thats all i care about....
- 22justin, on 03/10/2008, -19/+5bush X was actually a decent band...im sorry but nirvana was ***** almost as bad as nickelback
- GhostyBoy, on 03/10/2008, -1/+10I didn't know an opinion could be wrong until now.
- brownsound00, on 03/10/2008, -1/+6I was with him for the Bush part.. but nirvana - nickelback? no.
man, even if you don't like Nirvana's music, which i don't really care if you do or not, you still have to respect them for starting a whole generation of music, or at least playing a part in it. They are amoung bands like Led Zep, Kraftwerk, the Beatles, and Blues Incoporated (Alexis Korner) for the fact that they pretty much started awhole genre themselves
- brownsound00, on 03/10/2008, -1/+6I was with him for the Bush part.. but nirvana - nickelback? no.
- GhostyBoy, on 03/10/2008, -1/+10I didn't know an opinion could be wrong until now.
- elizabethb221, on 03/10/2008, -6/+6I like Bush better than Nirvana, but the last two are definitely portrayed accurately.
Except...Chad has spurs on his boots? Spurs are way cooler than Nickleback.- krisscofield, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1I'm assuming it's a hint at his sudden turn for the worst into a more country-esque sound (ie the "Everybody wants to be a rockstar" song).
- acefactor, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1If you think Nickelback is *****, you should see the town they're from: Hannah, Alberta. If you like cowboy hats, obnoxiously large pickup trucks and inbreeding, this is your town of choice.
- mahdaeng, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1That explains some things.
- tecunx, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2The dude from Bush chose Gwen Stefani to breed with, while the dude from Nirvana chose kurtney luv.
- mahdaeng, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1Dugg for "Spurs are way cooler than Nickleback".
Nice.
- paulmer2003, on 03/10/2008, -7/+11RIP Kurt :(
- PurgueFlantar, on 03/10/2008, -1/+2I hope she rots in hell for doing that to him.

- tdogzthmn, on 03/10/2008, -2/+13Alice In Chains!
- inspecality, on 03/10/2008, -2/+3Also known as "Alice 'N Chainz" back in the day. Yeah, they are really alternative.
- goffy59, on 03/10/2008, -2/+7Alice In Chains was more "hard rock". The term Grunge is pretty pathetic. The media made up the term. "Grunge" music is just rock music from Seattle. It has no special ingredient besides its great musicians. Alice In Chains was probably the most under appreciated band. And one of the Seattle's best. And no, not just Man In The box. They had a lot of great songs. The entire Seattle scene were awesome because they have all made music together. Right Turn is a song by Alice In Chains which features band members from Sound Garden, Pearl Jam, and Mud Honey. I think some others but anyhow. I don't really like any of the artists in that picture. Nirvana has some cool stuff but he wasn't some genius. I'd say Layne Staley had a much better voice. But they are both dead and they will be missed.
- brownsound00, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6And died on the same day OMG!!!!!!
But yeah man, AIC was sick. Too bad I never got to see them live. At least Jerry Cantrell is still doin' this thing.
And also, Temple of the Dog and Mother Love Bone were some sweet bands that didn't last long enough.- goffy59, on 03/14/2008, -0/+1I totally agree with you. Mother Love Bone is ***** kick ass, etc!
- mahdaeng, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2There is a very subtle line between orchestrated noise and all-out chaos, and Alice in Chains somehow got it right. They teeter on the verge of musical trash, but maintain the delicate balance in a way that is both excruciating and addictive. Good stuff!
- brownsound00, on 03/10/2008, -0/+6And died on the same day OMG!!!!!!
- tdogzthmn, on 03/10/2008, -1/+2Are they under appreciated? I think everyone who knows them understands how awesome they are. I dont think they are as well know as they should be. They had much more talent than Nirvana, and Lanye best rock voice ever.
- goffy59, on 03/10/2008, -2/+7Alice In Chains was more "hard rock". The term Grunge is pretty pathetic. The media made up the term. "Grunge" music is just rock music from Seattle. - FriedTurkey, on 03/10/2008, -4/+12Bush killed Grunge. Just like Warrant killed metal. Bush is the Warrant of Alternative Rock.
- brownsound00, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2Nah, I think when Cobain died, and then AIC started to fade with Layne's problems.. grunge died down. Plus with the rise of Boy Bands and all that... grunge was replaced by the next "hit thing". Bush was a good post-grunge band, but they were not part of the real grunge movement. They had nothing to do with it's downfall
- tecunx, on 03/10/2008, -1/+2FriedTurkey is right. When Bush started to get airplay we all knew the mosh pit era had come to an end.
- MajorLeague, on 03/10/2008, -21/+11Buried as inaccurate. Cobain = Puddle of Blood
- inspecality, on 03/10/2008, -3/+4How incredibly insightful.
Can I please get a link to some of the songs that you have written?- HotDogBun, on 03/10/2008, -5/+4can i get a link to some of the songs YOU have written?
- HotDogBun, on 03/10/2008, -2/+3apparently not since you buried me.
please, by all means, keep championing the cause of music that appeals to 13 yr old girls.
- MajorLeague, on 03/10/2008, -1/+1Sorry I try not to submit garbage and call it music. Cobain didn't have that same pride.
Oh yeah, best part is I'm still alive lol
- inspecality, on 03/10/2008, -3/+4How incredibly insightful.
- dxgg, on 03/10/2008, -1/+3What exactly is "alternative music" anyway? Not very "alternative" really.
- sfriedlander, on 03/10/2008, -0/+43nickleback= alternative?
more like
nickleback= ***** ass pop rock- futebollounge, on 03/10/2008, -0/+4nickleback = nickleback rock = a genre where everything sounds the same = really bad music = not appealing to me
- thewayigetby, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2I agree, I never viewed Nickleback as alternative music.
- moletimer, on 03/10/2008, -0/+1They're early stuff was. But Nevermind wasn't really alternative.
- aztak, on 03/12/2008, -0/+0it was an alternative.to the crap before

- littlejoe, on 03/10/2008, -1/+24Pixies FTW
- ShawnMattCraw, on 03/10/2008, -1/+16Cobain was ***** good but he isn't the only good musicians in alternative rock. REM, Violent Femmes, Alice in Chains, Pixies, Butthole Surfers, keeps going...

Men with makeup, leather, and intentionally made holes in jeans should have never gotten laid.- tecunx, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2I agree, but ironically when you think of Motley Crue, Poison and Guns N Roses, you cannot forget the hordes of hot, hot groupies around them, whereas the chicks were not all that excited about Mr. Cobain, Vedder or Cantrell.
- aztak, on 03/12/2008, -0/+0some guy got aids from those groupies
- tecunx, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2I agree, but ironically when you think of Motley Crue, Poison and Guns N Roses, you cannot forget the hordes of hot, hot groupies around them, whereas the chicks were not all that excited about Mr. Cobain, Vedder or Cantrell.

- blacklilyninja, on 03/10/2008, -1/+2Bush was alternative?
i thought the singer was just a clone of curt that courtney made for a sex toy. - goffy59, on 03/10/2008, -0/+14As Alice In Chains Jerry Cantrell puts it; *****.
- tdogzthmn, on 03/10/2008, -0/+2Did he really say that? I thought nickelback was largely influenced by alice in chains?
- rohcky, on 03/10/2008, -0/+5That's probably why Jerry said that.
