The Cal Marching Band's Amazing 16-bit Video Game Halftime Show
gizmodo.com — They run through a number of classic game songs, all while forming scenes from the games out of the band itself. It's got everything from Pong and Tetris to Zelda and Mario, and it's amazing.

- jackpot, on 11/15/2007, -1/+114Mortal Kombat is in there as well, I wish the video was shot from the other side.
- DMCer, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7The last 40 seconds are the best, it's when they do the Mario end-of-level skit. For all that work, the crowd didn't seem too grateful...
- Archon810, on 11/15/2007, -2/+2I think the band died somewhere in the middle of the MK set...
- m1ss1ontomars, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2look for a video from the other side on youtube. also, you can hear an announcer calling out hte games. i submitted the original video, also on youtube, a few days ago. if i was lame i'd probably say something like DUPE right now. but somehow i managed to post this story twice, so i'll keep my mouth shut.
- NeoCortex, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2The only thing missing was Tecmo Bowl, but I guess that would have been too easy.
- Audacitor, on 11/15/2007, -3/+104Woah... dude... Suddenly, I have a new respect for marching bands...
- Coven, on 11/15/2007, -4/+23Some of these bands bring in military drill sergeants to help with the formations.
- bstew22, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6who? because i've never heard of this.
- Coven, on 11/15/2007, -1/+5My high school band did, although we never went further than marching in parades. An ex of mine lived in Nebraska for a good chunk of her high school years, and one of her schools did the same thing. The drill sergeants are usually retired, and for the most part just get the band to learn some discipline and coordination with each other. Who better to teach you how to march than somebody who taught it to our men and women in uniform?
I don't know if the college bands do it, but I know for a fact that some high school bands do. - bstew22, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7ah, maybe, i haven't heard of it. I've played/seen a lot of marching band on the west coast as well as the midwest.
- Coven, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5well...I know my marching band was REALLY bad. Perhaps that is why our director brought in the drill sergeant.
- smacksaw, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2I went to military school and all of the non-cadet officers were military...and for a school of 400 kids our band blew away my next HS' band and we had 3000 students. It pays to have people who did it for a living as your instructors. I can still march, drill, salute, toss a rifle, etc better than anyone in the active military because they do it for a few weeks tops and we do it every day we are in school.

- bstew22, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6who? because i've never heard of this.
- LincolnA, on 11/15/2007, -18/+1Cal band deserves no respect. They still do lame high step stuff and facing, which makes it tough on the players' chops and directs sound away from the sidelines. Glide step and slides are the only way to go.
That and they forget to copyright their fight song then cry when we steal it :-)- knightblade2oo4, on 11/15/2007, -1/+10i bet you're a blast at parties.
- diggsilva, on 07/10/2008, -1/+4Copyright is inherent in the State of California and others.
- LincolnA, on 11/15/2007, -2/+2True right now, but happened before the 1976 Copyright Act. At the time, published w/o copyright notice affixed = public domain.
- hypedup05, on 11/15/2007, -1/+2Wow, you're proud that your university steals a fight song? That's lamer than anything I've ever heard. You're entitled to your opinion, but high step defintitely not lame. It requires more work then anything you'll do @ LA.
- LincolnA, on 11/15/2007, -2/+2True right now, but happened before the 1976 Copyright Act. At the time, published w/o copyright notice affixed = public domain.
- lemoocow, on 11/15/2007, -8/+1I'd have more respect for them if the players were any good. Try watching some DCI finalists, then we'll talk. I couldn't even finish it after their butchering of Mario. Horrible tone, no balance, and dropped phrases everywhere. Just barely above a high-school level. A bad high school.
- macmankev, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Well, considering for wind, distance, the fact that this was recorded on a crappy single mic low quality cam, I'd say they did pretty good. Lots of things can change intonation and balance and make it sound like certain phrases are dropped. Don't judge them based on a crappy recording.
- atonement, on 11/15/2007, -1/+2Nah, they suck. If you were ever in band you'd know this. BUT they played nintendo music, worthy of at least a digg or two. I enjoyed it!... but the band in and of itself is not up to par with it's fellow college colleagues.
- MagicBobert, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2Lemoocow, you need to get over yourself. I marched DCI for two years and I still enjoyed this. College marching band is a whole different ballgame. Trying to compare it with DCI is just moronic.
- Coven, on 11/15/2007, -4/+23Some of these bands bring in military drill sergeants to help with the formations.
- ChrisF79, on 11/15/2007, -0/+22That's amazing. Love seeing these bands try new things.
- bstew22, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3seriously. I played at arizona state. nothing was as cool as this.
- Juroujin, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I was thinking if ASU did anything cool like this.. (I go to ASU as well =])
- mfpratte, on 11/15/2007, -1/+1Its nothing new I saw the University of Texas do it better about four years ago. The band made an outline of mario and made him jump over stuff.
- sbgunn, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1In that case, here's a nice recording of the Oklahoma marching band ("The Pride") doing Thriller just a few weeks ago. If you want to cut directly to the good stuff, skip to about :50, but the whole thing is worth watching.

- Matt2k, on 11/15/2007, -0/+15Down. DOWN
- Gamer2k4, on 11/15/2007, -2/+2Right, the flag went down...I thought it started down, and you raise it up?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2You try and grab the flag and highest point and drag it down.
- ahoyhoy, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1The only thing that could have made the performance complete would have been launching a few real fireworks after the flag goes down.

- alx1507, on 11/15/2007, -6/+7I've seen both Michigan, and Michigan State do something very similar.
- c_starfish3, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6Iowa did it this past weekend, must have ripped off everyone else's idea
- WNW3, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6UC Davis too
- SqueakyD, on 11/15/2007, -1/+2Here is the Michigan State one on youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oi8-S1olyGI- diggsilva, on 07/10/2008, -1/+1That performance and this one share very little in both music and charting.
- insomniac8400, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2That was terrible. The music sucked, the movements sucked and to top it off some duche bag kept talking over the loud speaker. Plus nothing beats the live action tetris performance from cal. The michigan band members should be embarrassed after that crappy performance.
- Genthree, on 11/15/2007, -1/+2Mississippi State did it last year.
- zspeed78, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4Yes but none of those schools have the BIG GAME video also involving the marching bad, so suck that.
- insomniac8400, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1Pics or it didn't happen.
- Harbinger67, on 11/15/2007, -1/+2Wow, I wanna see the Ohio State band do something like this. Say what you will about the school or football team, but you can't deny that their band is something special.

- aaronm67, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Pokemon Red/Blue on Gameboy was a classic. I never played the cards or watched the shows, but the game can still keep me entertained for hours.
- riah, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3What?? Pokemon was that heat back in middle school. I had all 151 on the original.
- DiggnessFalls, on 11/15/2007, -10/+3I can't remember half those games or maybe I just can't tell what they are.
- TheKrillr, on 11/15/2007, -1/+5Tetris... then something else... then pokemon. then zelda... then mario...
- all13d, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Mortal Kombat. How can you not remember?

- matt487, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1Another WSU digger! Very nice.
- timewarp424, on 11/15/2007, -0/+12that flag and castle was crazy. nice job.
- fodaley, on 11/15/2007, -5/+1University of Florida does something similar as well. The UF marching band faces the non-student side (the away team band faces the student section) so I had an upside down view too.
- soapdev, on 11/15/2007, -6/+45GO BEARS!
- SohailKhanifar, on 11/15/2007, -1/+1I bearly made it through college.
God, i've been waiting so long to say that. - PooPsnooP, on 11/15/2007, -2/+5CAL BAND GREAT!
- SohailKhanifar, on 11/15/2007, -1/+1I bearly made it through college.
- kaidovak, on 11/15/2007, -14/+42The brass, especially the trumpets, need to work on their range. The Zelda theme was painful.
- bstew22, on 11/15/2007, -3/+37the recording was *****... and also the band was moving from back to front... I'm not saying that their range is good, but there is no way to frikin tell from this recording.
- bloodytemplar, on 11/15/2007, -8/+2They only frakked once or twice. More likely, they need to work on their tuning, but that's very difficult in cold weather.
- acevoncash, on 11/15/2007, -1/+11agreed. the intonation was *****. but range? meh. if they tried not passing stones through their horns, then they would stop cracking every note.
- techmaster, on 11/15/2007, -0/+7I was thinking the same thing. I'm a trumpet player myself, and that video really made me cringe. That is a college band right? The college bands I've heard were much better musically. But the show was definitely cool. Some of it was kind of timed screwy, like when they formed triangles for Zelda, two of the triangles finished forming LONG before the other two. That's purely the fault of whoever laid out the field charts for the show though. Usually, the way they time the charts, the whole field will be a chaotic mess of people, then all at the same instant, everybody snaps into place and the picture seems to appear out of nowhere. I guess imagination takes a toll when you're forming basic geometric shapes on the field though. ;)
- Shawn4168, on 11/15/2007, -2/+16I'm guessing that
1) It was really cold out, and
2) The stadium is not built with acoustics in mind.- dickbain, on 11/15/2007, -3/+33) The brass line really did suck and should probably practice a tad bit more...
- bstew22, on 11/15/2007, -2/+3have you ever heard them live? thinking no cause they are a decent band. ..dick......bain.
- dickbain, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1Yes, actually b........stew........22 I have. They're not that good. Give all the great drum corps in the area, they should be a lot better.
That brassline miffed far too many notes for a rather simple field show. It wasn't the audio recording, it was just a bad night for them.
- wraptor347, on 11/15/2007, -0/+21) It was pretty cold.
2) I don't really know anything about acoustics.
3) I was waiting for someone to put this online.
4) It looked cooler from the student section (the opposite side as the camera). - PanFan, on 11/16/2007, -1/+0This would be amazing in a stadium like Autzen.
- dickbain, on 11/15/2007, -3/+33) The brass line really did suck and should probably practice a tad bit more...
- brjndr, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2I was at the game, it sounded good there but terrible on the video. Also, at the stadium the announcer was saying all the names of the video games and encouraged the Cal mascot to beat up the USC and Stanfurd mascot.
This has been the best thing at the last 5 Cal games. Longshore is killing me. - trisweb, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5FYI - this was a field mic'd official video, so the audio directionality is very bad. I know, I set up the microphones. Basically the mics record whichever brass instrument is pointed directly at them at any given time. Not so hot, but better than recording 90% crowd noise and 10% band, so it's a tradeoff.
The band sounds much better than they do on this video, just take my word for it.- HolyJaw, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2Hence why the trumpets sporadically drop about 90% of their sound and then jump right back in like it's nobody's business.
- TheUberDork, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1yeah, I used to play trumpet and much of it made me squirm. Acoustics have literally nothing to do with them cracking notes off, or not hitting the (high C?) notes. Any musician will tell you that they don't sound like they're 100% on all the music yet.
- bstew22, on 11/15/2007, -3/+6very ***** cool.
- OG1502, on 11/15/2007, -5/+26Go Berkeley!!!

- WarnerK, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3That was awesome. Tetris was my favorite, by far.
- TheGambit, on 11/15/2007, -2/+7i think this was the first time i've ever watched an entire half-time show
- TheLoneWolf071, on 11/15/2007, -0/+23Awesome. But is there a video of it from the other side, Cause that's what it seemed to be catered for... how well, still freakin awesome.
- kernelhappy, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8You would think with all the work they put into it, they would have had some people ready to do a better job of recording it on hand.
- diggsilva, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2Memorial Stadium doesn't allow for proper video recording from the student side.
- kernelhappy, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8You would think with all the work they put into it, they would have had some people ready to do a better job of recording it on hand.
- evanstapler, on 11/15/2007, -1/+4That was absolutely stunning.
- bingobongony, on 11/15/2007, -8/+1Would have been nicer is they had done this for a nationally televised game with a blimp...or at least had the guy with the camrea being on side of the field that represented the BOTTOM of the screen!
Or if typical 18-22 year olds ever played any of these games. I mean, if they are going to do classics from before college kids' time, why not Pac Man? Would have been easy to recreate.- bstew22, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1would have... but it wasn't.... just can't appreciate it?
- LanceHardenburg, on 11/15/2007, -0/+4What are you talking about bingobongony?
I am in college now and I grew up with each and every one of these games.- bingobongony, on 11/15/2007, -6/+1Yeah...right.. You played Pong. And you played the original Super Mario Bros game...when you were TWO. (And that is assuming you are a senior.)
You are not a child of the 80s if you were born midway through it- sporg, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3Your one to talk BingoBongo, Im pretty sure your were born about 1995.
- bingobongony, on 11/15/2007, -4/+1Awwww...I have a stalker. How CUTE.
- bingobongony, on 11/15/2007, -5/+1Oh and...your?
Thakns for once again doing more harm to your own reputation than I ever could have done to you. - andycr512, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2bingobongony: You would think that a spelling nazi would spell "thanks" correctly.
- Stevo23, on 11/15/2007, -2/+0What are you talking about? a) Pong wasn't included in that video (there's no Pong music!), and b) I was born in 1985 and I certainly played every one of those games, especially the original Mario Bros. If I live to be 100 I'll probably never forget where the warp zones are or how to get on the roof in the dungeon.
- bingobongony, on 11/15/2007, -2/+1Uhhh, Pong WAS in the video...as in the first one they did.
And like I said..if they are going to include games that were made before you were born, why not Pac Man? FAR more popular than Zelda. And easier to recreate.
I saw The Wizard of Oz but I don't consider myself to be part of that era.
- bingobongony, on 11/15/2007, -2/+1Uhhh, Pong WAS in the video...as in the first one they did.

- TheDefiant, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1Okay.
- kaplanfx, on 11/15/2007, -0/+3GO BEARS!!! I was there, it was pretty neat. Unfortunately I was sitting at one of the end-zones so I had to watch Bear-Vision to realize what they were doing. The audio obviously sounded a lot better in person. Also for those who don't know, the Tree that made an appearance is the mascot for rival Standford University, whilst the Trojan is the mascot for much loathed USC. And yes, that was Mario that makes an appearance along with Cal's mascot, Oski the bear!

- astyanax, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8Almost every gave except for MK was 8 bit or less. I think the OP is just wrong, not the band :-)
- CosmoKramer, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2No mention of Contra?
- greenblob, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2The band did a SSBM thing at the main plaza too.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 11/15/2007, -8/+2Amazing? That music was absolutely horrible. The drill was decent.
- thtroyer, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1The music wasn't bad. The camera's mic never does justice to a marching band.
If you're going to be critical, at least do a decent job at it (and never use words like 'horrible' unless absolutely warranted):
-The drill, while creative (I loved Triforce set!), was fairly sloppy and for a marching band show, there was a _lot_ of 'stand and play' charts.
-Music seemed to phase a bit. Plus it was very strong while the band is standing, but it becomes muddied and substantially weaker once they start moving drill.
Seriously, if you're going to critique a marching show, do it right. That said, I throughly enjoyed the show. I was a band nerd in HS and loved marching band. I wish we could've done something like this. There really is a lot more potential for a show like this. Change a couple charts here and there, clean the music and drill a little, and it could be truly amazing.
Have there been any Drum Corps shows like this?
- thtroyer, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1The music wasn't bad. The camera's mic never does justice to a marching band.
- scifipirate, on 11/15/2007, -4/+1way to copy UF: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scifipirate/179209710 ...
- diggsilva, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4Right, like there is really anything similar between that picture and this entire show.
Hmm... Who would have thought that two separate groups of people who are exactly the same age range and grew up in the same culture might come up with the same ideas separately?
Aren't they all just copying Nintendo?- Discobreakin, on 11/15/2007, -1/+0I wouldn't say they're copying nintendo since they're not making video games, but anyway - UF did pretty much the same songs, and had that big mario jumping over fireballs for about a minute. It was pretty fantastic.
- PanFan, on 11/16/2007, -0/+0You act as if the band members wrote the music and the drill... they may or may not have suggested it, but I know that no STUDENT of our band (OMB) writes our drill/music. Universities hire someone to do it.
- insomniac8400, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1You need to post a video, because some ass said the same thing about Michigan and did post a video. It was terrible. 10-20 levels of magnitude below what cal pulled off. So post your video and let us see how wrong you are.
- diggsilva, on 07/10/2008, -0/+4Right, like there is really anything similar between that picture and this entire show.
- Elky25, on 11/15/2007, -2/+1that might just be the coolest marching band in the history of mankind
- dwninjungleland, on 11/15/2007, -13/+6TOTALLY ripped off of this band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU
It's cool though.- ChefAnubis, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1i sadly got rick rolled
- RockoSpooner, on 11/15/2007, -1/+2sick, i was at this game.
- acevoncash, on 11/15/2007, -2/+8atrocious intonation. cool that a band is doing it? sure. But they should try not sounding like a middle school band. Anyone can play loud. thats not impressive. Playing loud and well... thats a different story
- Vulphaestion, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2I wish I could digg you 50 times. I played world champion drum corps, and this band sounds horrible.
If you want to listen to a good show, go to DCI shows. - zspeed78, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2If anyone is going to have band geeks, its cal. I doubt the CAMCORDER audio, compressed, isnt doing it any favors.
- Vulphaestion, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2I wish I could digg you 50 times. I played world champion drum corps, and this band sounds horrible.
- xadhominemx, on 11/15/2007, -1/+19I can quite literally hear the Cal band play right now. They sound much better in person!
- jf76, on 11/15/2007, -5/+0nice..but florida did it first.
- dae3dae3, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1It is probably more likely that florida is just the first band that you heard do it. I can almost guarantee there will be a dozen posts claiming that their band did it first. Schools copy each other all the time. If you tracked it all the way to the actual first band it would probably be some high school in Arkansas that nobody has ever heard of.
- Mejari, on 11/15/2007, -7/+2Would be more impressive if the OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY Marching band didn't do this same show earlier this year. Jeez, first we beat them at football, then they steal our marching band show? Way to go Cal, way to go.
- sherbertbones, on 11/15/2007, -2/+5Then we beat you at academics...
- diggsilva, on 07/10/2008, -0/+1Proof?
- SittinSidewayz, on 11/15/2007, -0/+5That was well done. And made me realize that humans are just really big ants especially when in large groups.
- dae3dae3, on 11/15/2007, -3/+3Cool idea for a show but it sounded like only 10% of the band actually learned the music and everyone else was just half-assing their way through it. I did marching band all four years of college and this is what a first or second run-through of a show should sound like in practice and not the game performance. We would have gotten a collective ass chewing if we would have played like that at a game.
- Owndyou, on 11/15/2007, -3/+0amen brother. i know what you mean. they sounded like grade A poop
- Texastornado, on 11/15/2007, -2/+0Totally correct on that one. Poor intonation and missed notes. Never would have happened had it been a DCI drum corp. ;)
- diggsilva, on 07/10/2008, -0/+3you try recording a marching band that faces different directions in a stadium and see how it comes out
also, how many different shows did you do per football season?- dae3dae3, on 11/15/2007, -0/+0Different show every home game.
- trisweb, on 11/15/2007, -2/+3I can vouch for the bad sounding instrumentation being the recording, because I set up the microphones. On the field. Yes, it was field mic'd (both east and west sidelines), as this is the official video from the press box. Individual instruments sound bad because of the changing distance to the microphones, but from the stands and in the stadium the band sounded much better.
So, in effect, you're only hearing 10% of the band -- the 10% with their horns pointed directly at the mic at any given time. You are forgiven for your misinterpretation.- dae3dae3, on 11/15/2007, -0/+0If this is the official recording perhaps you should move the microphones to a better position.
- TheUberDork, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1I was in band in highschool, and Totally agree with you. they did sound mostly like ass. BUT in their defense the camera was setup on the "wrong side" of the field. none-the-less That would have been a kick ass show to play in competition! Crowd response much!? woot!
- gregv, on 11/18/2007, -0/+1You do realize that the Cal Band does a different show every week. Besides, as trisweb mentions; given that the band is playing to the other side of the stadium, they sound great.
IMHO the Cal Band is by far the best of the PAC-10 bands, and has been for a long time. I'm saying this, and I was in the band of another Pac-10 school during my days in college.
- Owndyou, on 11/15/2007, -3/+0amen brother. i know what you mean. they sounded like grade A poop
- greenamp, on 11/15/2007, -8/+1That was great!
I wonder though how much of this is lost on the average college age person though? The 18-25 crowd didn't grow up playing the original Zelda and surely never touched an Atari when it was the ***** *****.
up up down down left right left right B A select start.- DeviantDragon, on 11/15/2007, -0/+6You act like the 18-25 yr old crowd wouldn't recognize Zelda music from all its inclusions in SSB and other Zelda games?
- Owndyou, on 11/15/2007, -0/+0im 22 and none of it was lost, believe me.
- Eastcoastsurfer, on 11/15/2007, -0/+8Im 18, and grew up around atari, nes, snes, and every thing in between and since. None of it was lost to me either.
- iofthestorm, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2Umm, a lot of gamers know the culture even if they haven't played the games themselves. I'm not even in college yet and I got all of the references too. I've played the original Zelda too, and honestly who hasn't played the original Super Mario Bros.? Tetris is a frickin giveaway, people still play that obsessively, whether on graphing calculators or Nintendo DS or probably cell phones too.
- diggsilva, on 07/10/2008, -0/+2I played the original Zelda and the original Mario Brothers when they came out. Just because you were apparently behind the times doesn't mean everyone was. Also, there are more than just people between the ages of 18 to 25 at a Cal football game.
- zetec, on 11/15/2007, -2/+6Being 21, I'm not even going to dignify your jackassery with a direct response. Stop pretending like you're superior just because your ***** is closer to prolapse than the rest of us, you old *****.
- insomniac8400, on 11/15/2007, -0/+2You retarded? I'm 23 and remember getting my NES when I was young. I would say 22-28 would be the age group that literally did grow up playing the original nintendo and zelda.
- ghostie, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1Atari, maybe not, but being 22 I definitely grew up during a time when the NES was hot on the streets, and Super NES and Genesis were just getting started... Besides, all those games are so ingrained into popular culture that kids of any age should be familiar with them. PS, that mortal kombat theme was the *****!
- TheUberDork, on 11/15/2007, -1/+1yea, I'm 24. and was basically raised by Nintendo, and I had plenty of cousins with atari, and thus was exposed to it as well. and I've owned every Nintendo system* released up until the Wii (as well as sega, sony, and microsoft products) Each song was immediately recognizable. so please... put the crack pipe down. I'm betting most students at Berkely are well aware and impressed by their band's efforts. I would say the 18-28 age bracket were mostly brought up on Nintendo. it was a cold Christmas morning in 1986 for me. and that's all it took I was lost to video games forever after that. and oh yes, of course I had the subscription to Nintendo Power! I actually like the original Zelda, better than most of the latest incarnations. It's gold because it's SPECIAL!
*I don't count virtualboy that was just horrible, but I have seen it, played on it, and laughed at my friends who bought it. - greenamp, on 11/17/2007, -0/+1wow haha, I was just asking a question, not trying to make a point. I'm amused so many of you took offense to relatively neutral comment!
How on earth my comment could ever be interpreted as an insult is ***** hilarious.
