- Xzelick, on 07/15/2009, -1/+16I had a transformer that turned into a boombox.
- poesybeater, on 07/15/2009, -2/+9All you youngsters on here, don't be fooled. Everyone, and I mean everyone, called them Ghetto Blasters in the 80s. Boombox is a newer more politically correct term.
- borez, on 07/15/2009, -1/+7OMG the memories: Ghetto blaster, lino, streetsounds electro albums on tape, Nike Jordan Airs, Kappa tracksuit, windmills, 180's and headspins.
/my life was so much less complicated in those days - diggit83, on 07/15/2009, -2/+8A boombox is not a toy
- santiago1, on 07/15/2009, -2/+7 One of my fondest memories was about 1978 or 79, walking to school with my single-speaker boombox on my shoulder blasting my cassette of Judas Preist's "Hell Bent for Leather" or UFO's "Light's Out"! Good times......good times....
- sillymeganlee, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5If you read the article, there is debate over who made the original and when.
- greenroom628, on 07/15/2009, -2/+7has anyone else noticed an odd trend that, instead of boomboxes, people walking around with songs playing from the internal speakers on their cell phones while carrying it around like a boombox?
am i the only one that's annoyed by that? - pegothejerk, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5while it was a bit off topic, I remember those. I had one, myself. I would not have dugg you down for mentioning it.
- borez, on 07/15/2009, -0/+5Actually...no.
- RegalBegal, on 07/15/2009, -2/+6Reminds me of a story I know about Love and Hate.
- robbob, on 07/15/2009, -1/+5dubbed...the Ghetto Blaster
- tightscrummy, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4I remember calling them "ghetto blasters" back in the early 1980s. I don't think I heard the term "boombox" until much later.
- ShempRider, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3This is what Charles Bronson thought of them:

- lisaawesome, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3You know I have a terrible habit of referring to any music playing device as a boombox. When I was young we had boomboxes so it's just always stuck. It makes me feel like such an old fogey.
- PsychoPNut, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3+1 for taste
- wespadfield, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3They killed Radio Raheem.
- sjbdallas, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3Not even with headphones on? You're saying they hold it up to their head and listen in speakerphone mode?
- edwartica, on 07/15/2009, -0/+3Soundwave rocked.
Blaster sucked. - loathing, on 07/15/2009, -1/+4Does this article go on forever?
- santixx, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Well, at least the quality was much better than internal speakers from today's portable players.
Sometimes I don't know if it's the bad music that bugs me or the crappy quality that they listen it to. - RumpleForeskin3, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3Ghetto Blaster!
- Rotzooi, on 07/15/2009, -2/+4***** the digg.com URL shortener. I want to switch it off - like I was able to until a day ago. How?
- greenroom628, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2yep. i see guys doing that here in the mission district (in sf) all the time.
- lisaawesome, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Woooow. Just wow.
- OwdenBowden, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Thanks for the input Radio Raheem.
I remember them and had one found on page 3. Still works. - UnFriendlyFire, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2Watch Star Trek IV, when Kirk and Spock are on the bus in L.A.
- Aliwalla, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3wait... people used to walk around with giant stereos on their shoulders blasting music? and i thought idiots playing music on their cellphones were bad. public transport in the past must have sucked.
- PsychoPNut, on 07/15/2009, -0/+2id do you
- brainflakes, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Ah memories, I had a Sharp GF9500 until 8 years ago, unfortunately the tape deck and one of the phono sockets broke, then I managed to short the electronics out trying to repair them :(
I guess stuff made in the 80s isn't completely indestructible! (tho I kept the speakers, they still work)
A worthy replacement for me is the InMotion IM7, 3 way speakers (inc 2 subs!), ipod dock and aux in, and bloody loud with 8 D cells :)
http://i.expansys.com/i/b/b173434.jpg - leif777, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2I hate the name "boombox"... I was always embarrassed to say it
- Homerr, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2More than I ever wanted to know....but pretty cool.
- jshhmr, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2I wore out my boombox playing the Breakin' soundtrack. Kraftwerk's "Tour de France" FTW!
- Eurynom0s, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2Dugg for what they hoped the future would bring:
"Sophisticated Sony Concept design with twin mini-disc recorders!" - CalcProgrammer1, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1I had an old Sony AM/FM/tape boombox from the early 90's (well, old to me) that I liked the sound quality from so I took it apart and added an input. I just spliced an external input jack with a switch between the main board and the tuner. Works great for CD's, PC, iPod, etc.
- akneeler, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2Dugg for authors nerdy, unconditional love for boomboxes. I spent way too much time on that site.
- Chordonblue, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2The Sharp GF-777... I own it and it was AWESOME. It was like having a portable stereo system that had the quality of a full home unit (of course, you might have to stretch your definition of 'portable'). Shortwave and AM/FM radio, two cassettes (also used to make backup copies of computer games in my youth), separate mixing controls for external sources including an 'echo' effect (great for karaoke!), tons of inputs, even external powered outputs for speakers, etc.
For years, I used it as my computer sound and when the speakers finally gave out (almost 20 years later), I used it as an amp for external speakers. I don't have the heart to throw it out, as someone out there might need parts. :)
Boomboxes really went downhill when they stopped accepting external sources - that was just downright stupidity IMHO.
Only eclipsed by the GF-888 which I only saw two times in my life. Once in a showroom, once on a beach being carried by two big guys. It took 26 D cell batteries and had two handles for carrying the beast... - jtcoons, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1WWOOOOOO-OOOOAAAAA-OOOOOOHHHHH
- Rotzooi, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1From other thread: user sfrench writes:
It's a bug. We are working on it.
Until we get a fix pushed, the shorturls should continue to 301 to the destination, so you won't be getting a diggbar unless you have it enabled in your user preferences. - PsychoPNut, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1you were?
- DJRobX, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Same here. We called em "ghetto blasters" as kids and we didn't even know what "ghetto" meant!
- ramiro, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Reminds me of Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing, the scene where the African-American guy enters the pizza place demanding the Italian-American guy to remove their pictures of white people.
- TriNiiTy, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1id watch and submit it make first page on Digg
- hotspoons, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1When I was a young child, around 4 years old in 1983, I used to call such contraptions "boogieboxes". I used to say this around the house, normally in reference to the RunDMC or other old school hip-hop music videos on MTV at the time (when they actually played music videos). Then, about a year later, I pointed at a person listening to a very large boogiebox in public and yelled to my parents "that is a big boogiebox!". My father yanked me by the wrist, kneeled down, and told me never to say boogiebox in public. When I asked him why, he explained that boogie was a racial slur for black people. I didn't really understand what that had to do with boogieboxes at the time, but I took his word and never said boogiebox in public again...at least not without looking over both shoulders first. True story.
- theetoecutter, on 07/16/2009, -0/+1I have a few classics- Sanyo C-8 , Fisher with 5 band EQ and Shortwave , but none of them hold a candle to my Harmon Kardon Ipod only " Go Plus Play" Hands down the best sounding portable music system I have ever used......
Sorry Lasonic. - 4AntiStupid, on 07/16/2009, -0/+0I still have my old boom box in the closet. That got me through college and my first job.
