- T8erT0T, on 04/27/2009, -1/+25Now I just want to watch The Last Waltz.
- sbcea, on 04/26/2009, -1/+18Amazing. I love The Band. Great post.
- donalddraper, on 04/27/2009, -2/+15Last Waltz. Single greatest recorded moment in musical history.
If I could time travel, I would go back to San Fran, Thanksgiving day, 1976 just to see Mavis Staples and her father singing "The Weight" with The Band.
Not to mention Young, Dylan, Clapton, Hawkins, Mitchell, Waters, Wood, Ringo, Diamond, and Van Morrison...
Dugg for The Band. - rhustang, on 04/27/2009, -0/+12wow, really did not expect to see this on digg, a pleasant surprise.
as others have said, if you haven't checked out 'The Last Waltz', i'd recommend that you do so. - DeadSkinMask, on 04/27/2009, -0/+10Sorry, hate to play the "know-it-all" card, but the Footage of The Staple Singers from the Last Waltz film, was not fillmed onstage the same night as the rest of the concert. As the story goes, the version of "The Weight" that was performed at the Winterland was pretty lack luster and some of the vocals were off. What they did was rented at warehouse and recorded the Weight + a couple other songs after the fact to ensure top quality.
As it turns out, The Winterland show was not the last time all 5 members performend on stage together, it was actualy at this warehouse shoot a day or two after the "Last Waltz".
Semi-Related-Note: I was lucky enough to catch Mavis Staples live a few years back, and she talked about being in the film, and said it was one of the most memorable experiences of her life. She then proceeded to play "The Weight" in her show.
The Last Waltz was indeed one of the greatest concerts ever.
We are all lucky that the amazing footage will out live us and generations to come. - DeadSkinMask, on 04/27/2009, -0/+9Richard Manuel + Rick Danko
RIP
Truely one of the greatest and most influential bands of the past 50 years. - maqikelefant, on 04/27/2009, -1/+10That is some high quality concert footage, especially considering it's from 1970.
- badwithcomputer, on 04/27/2009, -0/+8i've seen this before- he's trying to draw attention to the fact that he just dugg somebody's story so they will turn around and digg his submissions. based on his submission history, it looks like he's working for/owns some less than mediocre celebrity gossip site that serves up zero original content.
he's even commenting in his own submissions to try to get people to digg them. it's kinda sad. - donalddraper, on 04/27/2009, -0/+6Dirt Farmer was exceptionally good.
Keep in mind The Band was Canadian except for Levon. - DeadSkinMask, on 04/27/2009, -0/+6Mike, you know the rules. No playing on the computer until your homework is done.
- ooMARLAoo, on 04/27/2009, -0/+5Their will never be another Richard Manuel.
- Carramrod72, on 04/27/2009, -0/+5The Band and nowadays, Levon Helm solo, are a true American gem. "When I Paint My Masterpiece" has by far been my hands down favorite song for the last five plus years. Seeing it in Observe and Report (loved the movie) severely upset me because it was almost like my own song until then in that I never met anyone that ever even mentioned liking it. Kind of sad...
Just wanted to say that....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JFxVlGR6g8A - beloitpiper, on 04/27/2009, -0/+5While I really love The Band, I think Bob Dylan's version is better.
- RansomHoldiay, on 04/27/2009, -1/+6bob dylan referred to Robbie Robertson as a mathematical guitarist. i think that is a fair assessment.
- MasterGrief, on 04/27/2009, -1/+6We need more classic rock on the front page.
- DeadSkinMask, on 04/27/2009, -0/+5Because it's better than the music you listen to.
- SlyT862, on 04/27/2009, -0/+4Agreed, although some of the credit still belongs to The Band... they're Dylan's band on that track.
- Mookeh, on 04/27/2009, -0/+4Holy crap, The Band on Digg? Glad to see I'm not alone in appreciating these guys. The Last Waltz is one of my favorite concert DVDs. Dugg!
- AdmiralHalsey, on 04/27/2009, -0/+4its reassuring to know that the effect of the last waltz is a shared one
- KingHarvest00, on 04/27/2009, -1/+5Love The Band. They do not get enough credit.
- brettruffenach, on 04/27/2009, -3/+7A great song in incredible quality. Dugg.
- cabes, on 04/27/2009, -2/+6Dugg for Canadian rock music.
- frat2186, on 04/27/2009, -0/+4Hey, mister, can you tell me where a man might find a bed?
- Cerebron, on 04/27/2009, -0/+4Not to be a snob or detract from this excellent performance, but I agree.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -1/+4at least HIDE your circle jerking. I mean...badwithcomputer swears that he isd not a circle jerker! His submissions make it to the front page on their MERITS!
- GJBlizzard, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3It's from the documentary "Festival Express."
- LoneRiver, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3Because The Band is awesome.
- exspasticcomics, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3if I could digg it more than once- I would...
- Crazytree, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3I'm torn.
The fact that this song was posted on digg almost cheapens the experience... quick someone post a PEDOBEAR!
That being said, I've never seen this version, and I thought I'd seen almost all of The Band's stuff... incredible. - dead777, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3Do it. I say use any excuse to watch The Last Waltz.
- dannythepan, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3awesome..this is one of my all time favorite songs! so random it's here.
- DeadSkinMask, on 04/27/2009, -0/+3Some of the best candid "Rock Star" footage ever:

(Anyone who has not seen "Festival Express", pick it up and treat yourself. It's one of the greatest Music Films of all time. Right up there with The Last Waltz) - bouche, on 04/27/2009, -1/+4I loved festival express. It is a MUST OWN dvd. Something like that should happen again. I'm glad that it happened in Canada and it should happen again in Canada.
- inactive, on 04/27/2009, -1/+3@comfort
This guy just spams that comment. Check out his profile. I don't know what he's doing, but he sure enjoys being annoying. - Carramrod72, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2Indeed. Just love the way Levon sings it.
- Badmotorfinger, on 04/27/2009, -3/+5underappreciated band
- petteroes, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2It's like The Band just got tainted somehow. I would never have thought to see them on digg, but hey, I love it!
For you kids with your modern music, this is something you at least should check out to expand your horizon a little. :) This is classic rock at its utmost finest. It's not only The Band performing but they are performing a great Bob Dylan song to boot.
Check this out if you haven't heard of The Band:

One of the greatest concerts of all time. - Carramrod72, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2I'm retarded. I knew that and feel shame. Saw Levon with my Dad and brother twice recently in NY and Montclair, NJ... If you can, please do so.
- Oktoeatfish, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2Richard has got that kind of soul voice that gives me chills.
RIP Richard - If one star shines that's just enough to get inside - TrevorPace, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2They call that: The 1970s.
- Carramrod72, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2Young douchebags get old also...
- heaintheavy, on 04/27/2009, -1/+3Brilliant
- machinaBleed, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2wilco and fleet foxes did a great cover of this when they toured together http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmZfV6tqbTU
- RonanConway, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2my parents saw Richard Manuel's last concert before he killed himself. they loved the band, and my dad has done a good job making me appreciate what they did for music
- guitarchitect, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2You know it's a Bob Dylan song right?? My favorite cover still goes to Chris Whitley...
http://tinyurl.com/whitley-paint - MasterGrief, on 04/27/2009, -0/+2I always enjoy recordings like this. From a professional entertainer's standpoint, they're awful, but they provide such an interesting look into the lives of these famous (and often dead) people.
- Sherman901, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1Awesome song and awesome band!
- idesign, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1Both those bands are as close as you're going to get to The Band today. btw if you have the chance to see Wilco live, do it. Saw them last year in Chicago during their 5-night stand where they went through their entire catalog and it was amazing.
- peteyb1313, on 04/27/2009, -0/+1GOB!
