- dillhole, on 10/12/2008, -0/+19If my favourite song is lower than a song I don't like as much, then I hate this list and so should everyone else.
- thorstrongstone, on 10/12/2008, -1/+14People who are complaining about this list are outta their ***** minds. This is one of the best lists on 60's music I have ever seen. Sure, the order is off, but look at what they listed. Who the ***** else would place the Stooges on a list with Nina Simone and Mingus? I mean, the ***** thing had the Sonics on it.
People who complain about the Beach Boys; you don't realize how influential and important Pet Sounds was, do you? I don't care for Brian Wilson and his gang, but they changed everything. As did the Stooges, Desmond Decker, and The Sonics. - kittymeow, on 10/12/2008, -3/+13Dylan's Rolling Stone in at #4? Holy Mackrel. Jackson Five in ahead of Dylan? They must be taking the same drugs that Bob was in the 60's.
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -0/+6Well, I thought it was an EXCELLENT and well-rounded list, which gave very much attention to a lot of my favorite bands and my favorite songs of my favorite bands that have simply gone unappreciated (seriously, I expected to see a bunch of grateful dead songs and go 'meh,' but the Zombies? Friday on my mind? I can't name them all, obviously, but let me repeat: excellent).
I will use this list to expand my music tastes. - Theknightinhell, on 10/12/2008, -0/+6What, no Surfin' Bird? I guess they haven't heard
- Duncster, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5Why isn't (insert any Beatles song here) not in the top twenty...?
- VIPAccess, on 10/12/2008, -4/+9Why are Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane not in the top twenty?
- Uberpog, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5"In a pre-Dark Side of the Moon world, "Astronomy Domine" was Pink Floyd's calling card, single-handedly generating every space-rock cliché and exposing rock's true psychedelic potential. Forget Jerry Garcia and Jefferson Airplane: According to Syd Barrett's brilliantly warped songwriting, mind expansion and intergalactic research could only be conducted through NASA morse code, academic electronics, time-rippling guitar echoes, and tabernacle vocals about Saturnian staircases. --Alex Linhardt "
This song deserves better than #159 I would have at least put this song in the top 100 considering it helped to catapult the underground psychedelic music scene into the forefront of 60's culture.
Oh and there's no Soft Machine... this list has no Soft Machine. I call Shenanigans. - inactive, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5Some much needed additions (imo):
Nights in White Satin - The Moody Blues
Ruby Tuesday - The Rolling Stones
Sunshine of Your Love - Cream
While My Guitar Gently Weeps - Beatles
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
My Little Red Book (and 7&7 is) - Love
Lola - The Kinks
Here Comes my Baby - Cat Stevens
Undecided Man - Paul Revere & The Raiders
My White Bicycle - Tomorrow
I can go on forever. The 60's were the best! - PinkFloydFan, on 10/13/2008, -0/+4Pitchfork hates hippies, which is exactly why they did not include the Grateful Dead as well as the same reason why they have no business making a list of the best songs from the 60's. Just look at the White Rabbit writeup. "Even if you have hippies as much as I do..." It's like a bunch of Christians writing a list of the 200 best metal songs.
- ahjkl67435, on 10/12/2008, -14/+18WORST LIST IVE EVER SEEN
- Uberpog, on 10/12/2008, -10/+14I respectfully disagree. The entire top 20 should be Beatles songs.
I Want You So Bad/She's So Heavy is the best Beatles song as well as the best song of the 60's.
Oh, and God Only Knows??? Somebody's been drinking a little too much of the nostalgia juice to say anything the beach boys produced was on par with The Beatles. That's like comparing Kenny G to Miles Davis, you just don't do it. - g0tistt0t, on 10/12/2008, -4/+8Grateful Dead?
- phxphreak, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4I think more people would say the Beach Boys, actually... no one has really been able to successfully imitate either but more people have tried with the Beach Boys.
- jman480, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4dugg for dylan
- socialexpert, on 10/11/2008, -1/+5It is UNBELIEVABLE how much that T Rex song sounds like Devendra Banhardt. Or rather, how much DB is trying to sound like T Rex. It's not like I've ever been a huge DB fan, but wow...that takes a lot of wind out of his sails.
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 10/12/2008, -1/+5Have you heard the word?
- 68024, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4you mean... the bird is the word?
- Witchdoktor, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3You were under 8 years old.
- DirtyBurger, on 10/12/2008, -5/+8Another shining example of why you shouldn't read pitchfork.
And no, I don't read RollingStone. - franklymister, on 10/12/2008, -0/+3For once, I actually want to read one of these lists.
I don't need some "music journalist" to tell me what the best songs of the '90s or the '80s were, I was there. I can make up my own mind.
For the '60s, though - it's nice to have a fresh perspective, and a place to start looking so I can branch out and see what else I've missed. - haydukeqc, on 10/12/2008, -3/+6horrid list, the only redeeming feature is Dr. Who theme.
No Dead = Fail - dillhole, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2This list is about songs and not overall artists.
- huskerdude, on 10/12/2008, -1/+3If only Pitchfork could write an article about music instead of just continuing to write about themselves.
- malbertsen, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2I completely agree with you apart from the part about not caring about Brian Wilson and his gang. Though i do not care for Mike Love. That it true.
- jilllayton, on 10/12/2008, -1/+3Wow. Kenny G to Miles Davis?
It's cool that you feel that The Beach Boys production isn't on par with the "bigger than Jesus" Beatles, but to not give credit where credit is due could be misconstrued as Beatles elitism. I think that Revolver and The White album are some damn fine albums but so are Pet Sounds and Brian Wilson's Smile album. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've read that Paul McCartney's favorite song happens to be God Only Knows, and he's also stated that if it weren't for Pet Sounds there wouldn't have wouldn't have been Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Then again, Brian Wilson has said something to the same effect that if it weren't for Rubber Soul there wouldn't have been Pet Sounds. So, by your rational, Sir Paul McCartney, along with the people at Pitchfork, have been drinkin' from the same exact LSD laced juice box.
Although, I too feel that one shouldn't compare Kenny G to Miles Davis.
One is a saxophonist and the other is a trumpeter.
Ok --that was an ***** thing for me to write. Sorry.
But that Kenny G comparison hurt my Beach Boys lovin' heart. - socialfly, on 10/11/2008, -3/+5I'd have made changes
- jcdickerson, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2About the bird. Everybody has heard, the bird is the word.
- jagermeistr, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2I'm satisfied, MC5 made the list at least.
- kd1s, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2You know I hate lists like this. Why do I hate them? Because I see songs in there that I remember and have to go and download them.
Hence having to replace an 8GB iPod Nano with a 16GB Touch. Damn you! - malbertsen, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2The Top 50:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=19Y1VRTN - markintosh, on 10/12/2008, -0/+2I dream of an America where everyone is aware that the bird is the word.
- KingHarvest00, on 10/12/2008, -1/+3This is over two years old, for chrissakes.
- chinolofus, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1king crimson, velvet underground, mc5, ect. there are many bands on the list that arent pop.
- p_o_b, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1Or Crossroads? How many people started playing guitar because of Clapton's performance on this song alone? Eddie Van Halen said it was the only song he ever bothered learning note for note. Kind of an important one in my book.
- honestlypanda, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1Lola is a 70's song.
- Trenchbroom, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1"Israelites" made the top 10. That's good. "Strychnine" barely squeaked onto the list. That's bad.
Overall though, pretty good list, nice mixture of genres. Lots of Motown and international stuff which I was happy to see. - sgperry, on 10/14/2008, -0/+1brilliant - am off to see how many I can find on last.fm
- Canadaa, on 10/12/2008, -2/+3simon and garfunkel seem to be conspicuously absent from the top 20
(wtf makes a list of 200 of something anyway?) - KokomoNYC, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1PAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAPAOOOHMOWMOW
- thorstrongstone, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Download Ken Burn's Jazz, The Nuggets Box set, and pretty much anything you can find by Rhino.
- tehjames, on 10/13/2008, -0/+1You sir, are ***** retarded.
Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band wouldn't have happened if it weren't for the Beach Boys.
Its an undeniable fact. - FisherKing57, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1List like this are good whether or not you agree. They make you think about what you like and why. They can also serve as an introduction to good songs you never heard before or re-introduce you to songs you never fully appreciated.
- dsmx, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Just think most of those songs are coming out of copyright soon in the UK.
- uketsu, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Heard what?
- mrspurs16, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1Can you not spam comments to get your stories dugg please?
Thanks!
/Buried - Louay, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1***** ***** LIST EVER
jimi is not 1 nor in the top 5 not the top ten not even the top fiffty!!!!
buried for inaccuracy - myhandleondigg, on 10/12/2008, -2/+3The biggest flaw in this article is the notion that people give a ***** what Pitchfork thinks about the 60s.
- phxphreak, on 10/12/2008, -0/+1I Want You Back is the single greatest song of all time though. Absolutely perfect
