- Obey666, on 07/16/2008, -9/+39where the hell is FREEBIRD???
- vexingmodstwo, on 07/16/2008, -5/+34Comfortably Numb. Hands down the best guitar solo ever. Not because of any extraordinary skill needed to play it, but because somehow the notes are harmonically tuned to the human body and you literally feel like your taking a ride along with the subject of the story who is bombed off his gourd.
- RegalGSX, on 07/17/2008, -3/+24Make no mistake, Han Solo was the best.
- mikeevegas, on 07/17/2008, -1/+17No Clapton or Santana on the list. nice try.
- Olfster, on 07/17/2008, -3/+17Eruption
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -1/+13Wow what a stupid list, just taking big classic rock songs. Ever heard the solo by Steve Howe in Starshiptrooper on Yes's yes song albums, Steve Hacket's solo on Fly on a Windshield with Genesis. Wheres the Deep Purple, Rush???
Buried!!!! - seamark21, on 07/16/2008, -3/+12This list is right on, all these songs kick it in there own unique way. Listen to 14 Best Guitar Solos of the 70s the playlist is streaming and free so check it....
http://www.nutsie.com/playlist/14%20Best%20Guitar% ... - supernuke, on 07/17/2008, -0/+8How about some Funkadelic? Maggot Brain? One Nation Under a Groove? Come on.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 07/17/2008, -2/+9No "Like a Hurricane" by Neil Young?
- Hieronymus1, on 07/17/2008, -2/+8It's not a complete '70s guitar solo list without "Layla" or "Freebird" - period!
I won't argue with what *is* on the list, but those are *glaring* omissions. - daflo, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6Jimi died in 1970. And almost all of his well-known songs were from 1967-1968.
- Puisapres, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6Um, where's "Layla"? (Which also had a great *piano* solo, too.)
- gaqua, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6Everyone forgets about George Clinton when they talk about influential musicians - but all you have to do is realize that every #1 hit Will Smith ever had was laid down on a Parliament/Funkadelic bass line that was sampled. Hell, a lot of great hip-hop, rap, and soul songs have influence from George Clinton. And what's more, some of the solos in those songs are amazing.
- benjorino, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5Freebird bores me a little. it just goes on and on for ages, and its mainly just a sequence of similar repeated phrases... its still a great solo, just not really as creative as most of the others in that list in my opinion.
- Tyrghast, on 07/17/2008, -4/+9Killer Queen, by Queen, takes the cake. Everything Queen did was amazing, including the Highlander soundtrack!!!!
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -5/+10Godzilla?
- BelatedHero, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5One glaring omission: Duane Allman's solo on Little Wing from the Derek and The Dominos album Layla.
- schavira, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5'Marquee Moon' needs to be number 1, that or 'Like a Hurricane' by Neil Young, which isn't even on the list. 'Hey Hey, My My' merits mention too. Jimmy Page pulled off way better solos than Stairway. 'Since I've Been Loving You', anyone? And I love the Ramones, just they don't deserve to be here.
- LorcanFaol, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5This is a bad list. There are some good picks on there, but few of these are the best, most impressive, most memorable or most finely crafted solos of the 70's. And the ***** Ramones? Come on. I love the Ramones, but I'm sorry, The Ramones never played one of the best solos of the 1970's (you can't call them solos, anyway), nor did they write any of the best riffs of the 1970's. Any solos list that has The Ramones on it is not to be taken seriously. A lot of great ones were left off which could have replaced the ones that don't belong there.
- Serphyas, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5If ***** "I Wanna Be Sedated" makes the list, I would at least expect some BOC love.
- mooseofshadows, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3I was seriously upset with the lack of "Lazy" or "Highway star." Ritchie Blackmore had talent.
- heat0, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4You mean "Over The Hills and Far Away", right?
- daflo, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3I agree, the solo in Maggot Brain is truly epic, especially in the live version featured as a bonus on One Nation Under A Groove.
Nevertheless, let's not forget that the lead guitar on Maggot Brain is actually played by Eddie Hazel, not George Clinton (But I do agree that Clinton deserves much more praise than he gets) - lcrocker, on 07/17/2008, -2/+5Where's Steely Dan's "Reeling in the Years"?
- im2emo4myshrt, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3I am sorry Stairway to Heaven is the best in my eyes. It is short, but absolutely perfect. The entire song builds to that one note in the solo where it just explodes in a heavenly eruption of bliss.
I think I just creamed a little. - inactive, on 07/17/2008, -3/+6What the ***** is wrong with people. Not even half the songs are on this list are good, and only 3 of them have any business being listed amongst the best guitar solos of an entire decade. Their are probably about 150,000 other guitar solos from that decade that would knock anything from the ramones or...television... who the ***** are they... right out of the water... and Frank Zappa would be responsible for several hundred of them.
the ramones suck
the ramones suck
the ramones suck - moo113, on 07/17/2008, -2/+5Can't disagree with Queen or Floyd, normally I hate these things. Dugg.
- wyrdness, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3Little Wing was 60's not 70's.
- hiPpymIck, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4something from Robin Trower Live
..some ppl think hes a Hendrix clone but - if you listen - he isnt - bubba9999, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3Wow - Hacket and Howe in the same paragraph. You've outed yourself on digg, grandpa!
(p.s. - they rule!) - LowRentDiggs, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3I was prepared to be self-righteous but it's a pretty good list. I would probably put the Clapton/Allman dual solo at the end of Layla at 15. I haven't listened to Slipknot/Help on the Way in a long time. Gonna have to find a good version on archive.org.
- jonfredric, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2NICE~!!!!!
- 10ofDiamonds, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2All of those songs overrated, except for Sultans of Swing, Stairway, and Blue Sky. But they opted to include The Ramones and The Stooges instead of Steely Dan or Zappa, Santana or even Chicago? The Ramones suck. The Guitar Solo from Muffin Man > Than the sum of this entire list.
- Serphyas, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Freebird's soloist was also part of the Outlaws, wasn't he?
(fingers along to "Green Grass and High Tides" massive monster mamma-jam) - BillDoor, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2You mean where is ever track on the album !!!
- inactive, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Where the ***** is Stranglehold?
AWESOME to see the Stooges getting some props. - bubba9999, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Boston - More Than a Feeling.
- punx, on 07/16/2008, -1/+3Yeah, that's a great one. I listen to that song when I am in the dentist's chair. Well I listen to all of The Wall, but that one seems especially significant at the time.
- SonnyJoeFoxx, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Granted, BOC has fantastic solos in their deeper cuts but not even the middle of "Reaper" makes this list.
*shrugs* - NotOptium, on 07/17/2008, -2/+4Mahavishnu Orchestra's first seven albums were released in the 70s.
Zappa released 20 albums in the 70s.
Carlos Santana released 11.
(I could go on)
And they couldn't find a single song in any of these releases with a better guitar solo than Hotel California or The Ramones?
***** this list. - dsmx, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2That's far to much logic and reason for the internet.
- bmcnally, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Big fan of Dire Straits.
But if you're going to make a list of 70s guitar solos, you really can't make it an "X best". There were so many amazing guitarists, songs, and solos, you should just make a list of "Check out these riffs". - inactive, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3Got to love the quintessential Punk statement by the Ramones. "You want a solo? well here's your solo."
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee - mbrindam, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2No Rush, No Digg.
- fenix61, on 07/17/2008, -1/+3Was the second page really necessary?
- PedleZelnip, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Given that Hendrix died in 1970 and his best work was in the 60's I don't think he counts for the list.
- Trots, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2EVERYTHING Queen did?
- slash2314, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2The last Comfortably Numb solo always sends chills down my body. I especially love the Pulse live version of the solo. It definitely has to be my favorite.
- crowbarred, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1this is a voting system i need!
- jlynas, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1None of these are anywhere near as good as the solo on "Boredom" by the Buzzcocks
