Tab site, mysongbook.com, crippled by MPA
mpa.org — The popular tab site mysongbook.com (the best resource for Guitar Pro tabs) can no longer distribute tabs. Here ’s the drawn out explanation from the MPA. Remember kids, looking at guitar tabs is like stealing a guitar from a music store.

- kblsNbits, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was using newsgroups in the early 90s at college to find guitar tablature of my favourite bands, and groups like the MPA at that time were starting to get their foot in the door in terms of copyright infringement. On most tab sites, it is fans creating the tablature of the music on their own - it is idiotic to cripple this type of freedom. What's next?! The MPA will be sitting at my campfire ensuring I play only songs written by me??? No!! Good god, don't teach little Billy that chord combination!!! Pffft

but http://www.gprotab.net/ has "the largest online repository for free Guitar Pro tabs. GProTab.net's purpose is beyond just simple file sharing, but helping people in enhancing their guitar playing and musical skills.
At the core of GProTab is the entire archive from MySongBook.com, plus a constantly updating database of new tabs submitted by our users. To be able to read and use these tabs, you must have Guitar Pro installed on your system. Guitar Pro is a multitrack tablature editor for guitar, banjo, bass, and any other MIDI defined instrument including percussion. Besides writing scores, Guitar Pro is a useful resource for guitarists from beginner to experienced levels to progress , compose , or simply accompany themselves.

As KblsNbits said... tablature distribution has been around since kilobauds per second was still in the dictionary. Now I know most of todays music cannot stand up to some of the classics that predate BBS's but I certainly don't think it has anything to do with Bobby playing "Stairway" to impress his girlfriend. - GrundlTerror, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man this is terrible, I've been using that site for years. I wouldn't know the first thing about guitar if it wasn't for tabulature. This is a poor play by the MPA, musicians are starting to be seen as "the enemy".
- Daniel591992, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone know some other sites?
edit: Found a good one '
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/top/top100.htm - Eternalgorias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I found this site looking for info on what happened to mysongbook.com. The MPA may have some valid points on copyright infringement, but they fail to see the bigger blow they are delivering to the internet music community. Shutting down mysongbook is completely unreasonable, as many of the artists don't even have sheet music available to buy. Good luck ordering tab for bands such as Emperor, Dark throne or from any other independent label. It seems to me groups such as the MPA rush in and shut down whole sites without thinking about people who just want to play and contribute to music that is unavailable to buy. To quote Derryn Hinch, "shame MPA, shame, shame, shame."
- yuletide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1UN-*****-BELIEVABLE!!!! Way to shoot your fans in the frickin' foot! And the site was a goldmine especially for the hard-to-find eclectic tabs from all those kickass metal bands. Good thing I checked mysongbook before buying guitar pro for mac (and to think, I was so excited!!!!)
ARGH!!! This kind of ***** makes me so MAD!!! - yuletide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, cool. There are GP files on ultimateguitar.com too. I'm sure the files will appear in other places too... Just give them time.
