- johnhummel, on 04/17/2009, -0/+54I don't know why I'm doing this, but I have to.
I see several comments about "Who cares? Why must the Internet be abuzz? OMG - it an old story - why are we talking about it?"
We're talking about it because for the most part part these days, the popular singers are manufactured. They're pretty pretty people with average voices. They're given backup dancers and lip sync their songs on stage.
We're talking about Susan Boyle because yeah, she's not that great looking. And yes, she doesn't have the greatest voice in the world. But can you imagine what she could have done if she had been noticed 30 years ago?
Didn't happen, because all her live people took a look at her and went "Nah, she's not sexy enough. Sure, good voice - but people want to see nice boobs on their singers."
I'm tired of having pretty newscasters that don't know anything on our news only because it was decided that's what people wanted to look at. I'm annoyed that to be a politician, you have to be lovely like Sarah Palin or Mitt Romney handsome even if you're a no nothing lying moron - but hey, you look good!
That's why the Susan Boyle story is so hot - because hopefully, somewhere in people's minds, they think "Huh - maybe I should turn my lizard brain off and listen to what the person is saying, or what they sound like, instead of just liking them because they have dreamy Sanyaya eyes or a nice rack."
I want people to use their goddamn brains instead of just their groins in picking their celebrities or leaders. So yeah, Susan Boyle isn't the best singer in the world. But the fact that nobody gave Boyle a second look because "Well, she's not hot enough" is enough of a reason to celebrate when she finally gets noticed. - jerrykew, on 04/17/2009, -0/+24It's getting publicity virally. It shows there is something about the clip that appeals to a large audience. It is ONLY in geek forums I have seen any negative response.
- suprememilo, on 04/17/2009, -0/+20This lady is why the show was invented, to find undiscovered AMAZING talent.
well that and the add revenue... - latenightlab, on 04/17/2009, -2/+21I give her eyebrows credit for that amazing voice
- giveer, on 04/17/2009, -4/+22"/worked in musical theatre for years"
..Well, *****-a-doodle-doo. - asgardshill, on 04/17/2009, -0/+16Modern recording studios can pretty much make two cats screwing on a tin roof sound like Maria Callas. I can't wait for her first properly-recorded songs - if its anything like the raw talent she exhibited on the TV show, they'll be epic.
- RealmDown, on 04/17/2009, -1/+14She will be left with memory that she had the courage to try, and succeed at a dream, and that she inspired others. Not everyone has the courage she displayed.
- RealmDown, on 04/17/2009, -0/+12With all the war, bad economy, posturing hate-filled leaders of state, and overall sense that the world is in the middle of a step backward, it is a fine, fine thing to see the single realization of a dream that in turn inspires millions to feel good. We need more positives like Susan Boyle in this world, and less comments like yours.
- theOster, on 04/17/2009, -0/+8apparently you felt the need to provide info that might validate your opinion, so you're not much better.
- thecosmicpope, on 04/17/2009, -0/+8Of course her technique is lacking. She's an amateur. She has never sung with a professional, or in shows. She just sings. What did you expect? A perfectly mastered record?
She's an outstanding singer. - Frozo, on 04/17/2009, -0/+7I agree, Gordon. She is better than the large majority of people... but it was the whole shock factor that makes her seem even better. And yes, she overdoes the vibrato, but who cares.. it makes for good TV and she deserves the attention!
- RealmDown, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6Nicely said. Well done.
- mimimiaou, on 04/17/2009, -0/+6Am a bit sad for her. After her 15 minutes of fame, what will she be left with? It takes way more than a good singing voice to be a successful artist. After the feel-good factor runs out, people are just going to turn to the next big thing. It's like those many American Idol winners who faded into obscurity.. people like cheering for the underdogs, but they aren't necessarily going to buy their records.
- charlie6969, on 04/17/2009, -2/+7My life is better for having heard this woman sing.
Thank you, Susan. - Disease, on 04/17/2009, -0/+5You wouldn't say the same thing if she was an attractive size 2 showing cleavage.
- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -1/+6You cannot teach someone to be an extraordinary singer. You can only teach technique. 'Feel' or the ability to convey emotion, which I have to admit this woman does have, is an artistic talent that you are born with and can never learn.
- iritegood, on 04/17/2009, -2/+7Wow. Woke up on the wrong side of the bed?
- Delphium226, on 04/17/2009, -0/+5Watching the range of emotions on Cowells face tells you all you need to know about modern societies values.
- retrosteve, on 04/17/2009, -0/+4Just imagine how well she'll sing when she gets kissed!
- Tanktunker, on 04/17/2009, -1/+5They can manipulate time and space.
- EdgarVerona, on 04/17/2009, -0/+4So if she didn't have a good voice, would you call her Chewbacca on the street? Get a life.
- Tarantulus, on 04/17/2009, -1/+5some things you just can't learn...
- localzuk, on 04/17/2009, -0/+4Why do people think someone without 'looks' wouldn't be able to sing? I don't get it. The 2 are completely separate issues.
- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -2/+6Her low notes didn't have a lot of projections though.
And the vibratto is kinda overdone, I think.
Still, it was good. Big difference from what those people were expecting. - gsbterry, on 04/17/2009, -0/+4It is so delightful to see someone who is her own self.. a bit of a character, certainly not a slave to the current styles or anorexic school of beauty. Her voice was delightful as well..I'm not a music critic, but I liked what I heard.I was actually brought to tears, I was so happy for her.Yes even an overweight ,over the hill, never been kissed person can be enchanting. She had the courage of her convictions and reminds us all that it is possible for anyone to possess special qualities;not just the young, not just the beautiful. It was wonderful to watch the transformation of the audience from smug disdain to surprized delight. She is sassy, talented and I look forward to more performances.
- LordPhoenyx, on 04/17/2009, -1/+5Amen
- MrAdventure, on 04/17/2009, -0/+4What? Someone not super-pretty can sing? That's un-possible!
Honestly, that's just sad. - RealmDown, on 04/17/2009, -1/+5Wrong side of the bed, with a hangover, after wetting the bed.
- fabkebab, on 04/17/2009, -0/+4I thought this article was going to try to look into why the video was so moving, rather than what makes some people good singers-
I have watched the video many times, and think that at least part of the wonder of the video is in THE REACTION of the other people - The points that gave me the chills were actually when they were showing the other people, and you could see how they were stunned/moved by the singing -
I am not sure that this video would have been so moving if they had just shown the singer and not the responses - same for the Paul Potts video -
That said I dont really care - I loved both of them and wish the very best for the people involved - Tgizzard, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3One of the reasons this is such a good video is that, unlike Paul Potts, she KNEW she could sing. She was sassy. Watch the video again and look at the grin on her face right before she starts to sing. She knew she was going to own this crowd.
Confidence people! It's all about confidence! - EdgarVerona, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3Maybe I'm mistaken, but I think the interesting part of the story isn't her success but rather how extreme the reactions of the crowd were and how they shifted so completely in the margin of a few seconds. Watching a large group of people have their preconceived notions kicked in the nuts is highly entertaining.
- charlie6969, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3HEAR, HEAR!
- EdgarVerona, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3How can that be "no offense"?
For instance, if I say "No offense, but you make Sarah Palin look like an Astrophysicist," I doubt you're not going to take offense. You can't just slap "No offense" before something and then say whatever you want... at least not without expecting for people to ignore your request for them not to take offense. - inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+3yep!
correction:
"a lot of projection"
"Vibrato"
I had just woken up =D - inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2Of course. I wish this thing could change the music industry and people's mentalities, to pay more attention to hard working people with talent, instead of miley cyruses with 5 producers and writers making songs for them that they only have to sing in the mic and process with auto tune. It's unfair and disrespectful. And I'm pretty progressive towards the way the industry is conducted - but I admit, that's disrespectful.
- mimimiaou, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2Well, I hope she sees it that way. Imagine, everyone heaping praise, saying you're the greatest, saying you're absolutely marvelous.. totally building you up.. and then just when you've started believing it people begin to lose interest and nothing's happening for you the way it should be, doors start shutting in your face..
(I watch too much tv) - crowbarred, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2great reply
- Angostura, on 04/17/2009, -4/+6Exactly. Her voice is OK. A bit heavy on the vibrato for my tastes, but OK.
- Delheru, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2I wonder why it's the British show that keeps dragging up visually less appealing but remarkably talented people, while American Idol hasn't been producing anything particularly interesting for several years. Considering the talent pool you'd imagine American Idol would be a lot better.
My personal pet theory is that there's something inherently "wrong" in the US for wanting to be on stage if you aren't pretty enough, which self-selects a huge number of people out. A great shame... just looking at the talent found in UK, wonder how much goes undiscovered in the US. - inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2? You don't understand the concept, do you?
I've been a singer for almost a decade. And trust me, you're wrong. It doesn't sound good to me either, but it's not easy to master perfectly and has nothing to do with holding a note. - ishouldcoco, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2This another of people judging a book by it's cover.
- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2..and allow us to discover warp speed?
*waits for Intergalactic Federation of Planets* - Dinner, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2There is definitely less of a stress on shiny, glamourous, impeccable people in Britain. At least if TV is anything to judge by -- it's hilarious seeing all these American remakes of British shows where every homely or normal-looking person from the original is replaced with some chisel-jawed, perfectly proportioned extra-terrestrial movie star type.
- justok, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2>>American Idol winners who faded into obscurity..
Name them! Who are the winners who faded into obscurity? I can't name any of them who faded into obscurity. I can't name any of the ones who didn't either... - inactive, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2At one point, Simon had this goofy smile on his face and looked like he was in love.
- inactive, on 04/17/2009, -2/+4The science is a gray wig. Good job Paul Potts.
- fabkebab, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2But - The song and the harmony doesnt change, whether you watch the video or hear just the audio - yet there is something moving here about the whole audio-visual experience - not just the audio -
- Opiate, on 04/17/2009, -0/+2Yeah cause we all ugly and have no talent, the truth hurts :p
- Fabbyfubz, on 04/18/2009, -0/+1He's honest about what he thinks about other people's appearances, therefore he has no life???
