- OfNumbers, on 04/17/2009, -6/+194What a voice.
- immatellyouwhat, on 04/18/2009, -7/+176Susan Boyle is officially a Badass.
- tillerman00, on 04/18/2009, -6/+166We're all so proud of Susan Boyle, being ugly and yet able to carry such a beautiful tune. How amazing to multitask like that, to juggle such mutually exclusive things. Ever since science discovered the unmistakable connection between the larynx and facial aesthetics we've been able to ascertain vocal ability at a glance, but now that ugly old Boyle has arrived on the scene our entire paradigm has been left completely in upheaval.
- bstockwell, on 04/17/2009, -7/+156And here I thought Justin Timberlake's version was good.
- NextGenXbox, on 04/18/2009, -4/+136Sad that just because she is "ugly," people are surprised she can sing.
- gcnaddict, on 04/18/2009, -6/+127Everyone who is assuming this will blow over in a week, you guys have to admit, this is much better than when William Hung was a phenom.
- timothiuz, on 04/17/2009, -4/+75Amazing
- bike4ever, on 04/18/2009, -8/+75Somehow I see her singing the next Bond song. I will be all into it watching the beautiful chicks and then it will hit me who is singing. It will be like thinking of my first grade teacher during sex. Downer.
- jakereilly, on 04/18/2009, -6/+62He's a mediocre commenter. There's nothing special about his comments. If he wasn't "a special boy who sometimes pees his pants" then no one would care.
- crunchyeyeball, on 04/18/2009, -0/+53It was apparently recorded as part of a charity album for her local community centre or some such. Only 1000 copies were made, and the backing track was just a karaoke CD. Given she's from a pretty small town/village, I'd imagine it's not exactly Abbey Road. Probably just some local guy who happened to have a decent mic and some basic recording equipment,
She really does have an incredible voice, although she was 10 years younger when this was made. Leaves me wondering what we've missed due to her not being discovered a long time ago. - ieatpizza, on 04/17/2009, -4/+56applesauce
- relaxeder, on 04/18/2009, -1/+50William Hung got a record deal because he was so bad they thought everybody would go out and buy his album as a cruel white elephant gift for their co-workers.
This girl has serious pipes, and while some people might think all the fawning over her is just a pity thing because of her looks, she excels at and reinforces what these singing competitions should be about in the first place, her performance talent and nothing else. I hope she wins on those merits alone, because she sounds phenomenal. - inactive, on 04/18/2009, -2/+49Simon Cowell is no dope. Even if she doesn't win, you know that guy is going to sign her to do an album.
- cjschmidt, on 04/18/2009, -1/+40Yet another reason to hate American idol. This show is about finding talented people not just some pretty face they can manipulate. There a reason music was better before MTV.
- jggube, on 04/17/2009, -7/+44Such an unexpected performance.
- gcnaddict, on 04/18/2009, -1/+31Jerk.
- imautobot, on 04/18/2009, -3/+32Seriously? Is this really Susan? I only ask because this sounds professionally recorded, and if it were professionally recorded, why the hell are we only learning about her talents now? I'd like to think that if I worked in a studio, and that voice walked in, I'd be promoting the ***** out of it!
- alientwilight, on 04/18/2009, -2/+30If she don't win the Contest Someone will offer her a deal she's Money!!! Amazing Voice.
- jennyvan, on 04/18/2009, -3/+30I kinda like the Justin Timberlake song ( did I just admit that out loud?)
But seriously...she's got an amazing voice. I don't why people are so surprised that she sings well just because she's...not hot. There are plenty of amazing female singers that are ugly as hell...Aretha Franklin anyone? And really, she looks like anyone you would see in the grocery store. Certainly not hot, but not stand out fugly. She's more frumpy than ugly. She just needs a good haircut and wardrobe change and she could look better. - prettyawesome, on 04/18/2009, -2/+28I'd be interested if she wins. The man who won the last season was of the same type - not very pleasing on the eyes, but amazingly good at singing and endowed with a sparkling personality.
- c010rb1indusa, on 04/18/2009, -3/+29She is not a mediocre singer, did you listen to the song...it takes a talented singer to pull off the subtle depth of those notes, and les miserables is no walk in the park either.
- DeathRay2K, on 04/18/2009, -0/+26While I think it would be incredible if she did sing the next Bond song, I can't imagine it being a downer to hear her, knowing it's her.
- Burento, on 04/18/2009, -0/+24It is her humble nature and her being 48 without ever being noticed, mixed with her none-idol appearance that has made her a phenom..
- byronm, on 04/18/2009, -2/+25I don't typically listen to this style of music but man, she can sing! What i love about it is the fact it sounds so great but you can still catch a bit of her Scottish character peek on through.
- internetisscary, on 04/18/2009, -3/+26Pretty surprising.
- inactive, on 04/18/2009, -4/+25Legendary!
- caight, on 04/18/2009, -4/+25Why must people comment on this woman's appearance? Why not just accept this lovely lady with her exceptional voice? It is the heart that creates true beauty...
- Quipr, on 04/18/2009, -0/+21The song is by Arthur Hamilton.
- roguenkatz, on 04/18/2009, -0/+20As I recall, Ella Fitzgerald did not have what would be considered classic western attractive good looks but it didn't matter once she started singing.
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 04/18/2009, -1/+19Oooh, look at him, ready to pounce if he chooses incorrectly...
- freshgrease, on 04/18/2009, -0/+18Sounds alot like the ol' Jazz clubs. She's so classy.
- homercles337, on 04/18/2009, -2/+19VOLUME? VOLUME?! Where is the god damn volume?!
- hopeunknownmb, on 04/18/2009, -3/+20She seems to have changed all his lyrics, too
- imautobot, on 04/18/2009, -0/+16It's nice to see someone reply who actually has some understanding of how this gem got swept under the rug. Thank you!
- SwiftKick34, on 04/18/2009, -4/+19Go Susan! Simply amazing, you're an inspiration.
- Shellbait, on 04/18/2009, -0/+14Voice of an angel...
- wontstoptalking, on 04/18/2009, -1/+15If a beautiful young girl walked on stage and sung the same song with the same voice, I would still be applauding. I don't see why her 'appearance' is such a big deal- I'm more blown over by her incredible personality and the history that backs her up- being made fun of by the kids in her neighborhood? That's terrible! And now look at her! That's what gets me.
And then there's the fact that she suffered a minor form of brain damage after birth, and is trying to raise awareness of it- that's awesome.
And how she stopped her aspiring music career to care for her sick mother...
This is like the story of a lifetime, perfectly matched with an incredible voice from an even more incredible woman. - GrooTheWanderer, on 04/18/2009, -0/+13Never mind the makeover. Just put a Viking helmet on her and she's perfect.
- imautobot, on 04/18/2009, -4/+16You kinda missed the point there didn't ya?
- jojo77, on 04/18/2009, -0/+12agreed. After all this attention she was getting I was really hoping she didn't just have a good night. Looks like that isn't the case.
- SniperZero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+13and your point is?
- Hraes, on 04/18/2009, -0/+11Pipes.
- aaronhoffmeyer, on 04/18/2009, -0/+11He's already working on it.
The dude is becoming mega-rich. He has three very successful shows on, a major record company, a production company and a publishing company. Plus, he makes about $100 million a year in salary. - powermonay, on 04/18/2009, -0/+11Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....I don't think she's ugly at all, maybe a bad hair do or no shape to her eyebrows, but looks should have nothing to do with singing...I would pay top dollar to see her live.I love her sense of humor as well...
- chaser324, on 04/18/2009, -9/+19The song is by Diana Krall (not Drall)
Here's the song in question on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9y1vGxPVAA - rkiga, on 04/18/2009, -0/+10At first I didn't think it was her at all. This recording sounds like it's from somebody with a "younger" voice, but I guess it makes sense if it was from 10 years ago.
@evil-doer
That Potts guy was technically not a "professional", as he never received pay for any of the concerts/operas he was in (although he was in quite a few). They market these people as undiscovered talents. Nobody thinks they just pulled random people off the street, except you apparently. If you've been singing all your life, somewhere along the line you'll have been recorded for some charity event, or performed at some minor concert that nobody has ever heard of.
It's about exposing unknown talent to a huge audience, not about finding people that never performed anything in their lives before. - terracottapai, on 04/18/2009, -0/+10Thanks for that, my first grade teacher was a nun :(
- aaronhoffmeyer, on 04/18/2009, -0/+10Simon is already working a deal for her ...
Based on this ... she deserves an album ... - inactive, on 04/18/2009, -0/+9I like your sarcasm, and I appreciate your standpoint, because I understand the connection between "singers" and beauty that our society has created. Look around you at pretty much all "recording artists". They're all impossibly beautiful, or at least pretty damned good looking. Nobody cares about ugly people. Ugly people do not sell records. It's even spread to our radio DJs. People prefer to listen to a pretty face. I don't know if it's sad or just a way of life, or maybe both. But I do know that looks prevail over talent these days. Catch 98% of these "beautiful" singers without their multimillion dollar recording equipment to make their voice sound amazing, and you'll find that they sing just as well if not worse than the rest of us.
I say, Godspeed to you, Susan Boyle. Set a shining new example for TALENT. My ears cannot discern at all what you look like, and moreover, they shouldn't have to. Music is beautiful entirely within its audible self. - stockjones, on 04/18/2009, -0/+9Too many of today's singers have a similiar sound. That Mariah Carey, Britney thing etc. Boyle's style is more that crystal clear classic sound from an earier period. For that she is excellent and far far beyond average.
