- ayeroxor, on 04/02/2008, -1/+32Actually, Holst is ***** awesome.
- Aggaman, on 04/02/2008, -1/+3Boult was one of the finest conductors of this piece. The version to get is his later one with the LPO, recorded when he was getting close to 90 years old. He still had it in spades.
- achoi, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1The Planets is like the quintessential source of inspiration for movie scores.
Mars is a personal favorite. You can easily hear inspirations of it in Star Wars, Star Trek, Gladiator, etc. It blows my mind that this was written almost 100 years ago.
- userperson, on 04/02/2008, -5/+1I've heard 'Mars' and 'Venus' I think. It was okay... I don't remember it so well. What I do remember I wasn't so impressed by (why I don't remember it?). I don't know much Holst (the composer). Although it's the internet though you could find samples if you're so inclined, or maybe even a free legal copy of a performance (though maybe not a good one?).
- gravityboard, on 04/02/2008, -1/+8No, Holst is REALLY ***** awesome. I don't even like classical music, but this cover is proportionally awesome to the content.
- clarient, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3If you only THINK you've heard the Planets, then you really didn't hear them at all.
- userperson, on 04/03/2008, -1/+1No, I DIDN'T hear them all. The ones I heard were Mars & Venus.
- clarient, on 04/08/2008, -0/+1really didn't hear them at all =/= really didn't hear them all.

hope that link works - sonofslacker, on 04/02/2008, -1/+3The music is very good. Some of it is intense. I believe they used the song 'Jupiter' in the movie 'The Right Stuff'. Am listening to 'Jupiter' now, hmmmmm good stuff.
- hmac, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3The answer is "***** amazing".
Holst was a badass. - girlsansshoes, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1It's sci-fi sounding classical music, very cool to listen to.
My friend went to the kimmel center in Philadelphia a few weeks ago to see The Planets performed, she said it was amazing!
- ayeroxor, on 04/02/2008, -1/+32Actually, Holst is ***** awesome.

- Bigtimmey, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2i am a euphonium major.... noone writes amazing parts for the euphonium like holst did... maybe eric whitacre.... or john stevens.... but holst in my book is king
- sonofslacker, on 04/02/2008, -0/+0I'm not familiar with the 'euphonium' but I have to say if your music causes a riot, that's pretty bad ass. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rite_of_Spring
- Angostura, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Good to see that there are at least two Euphonium players on Digg.
It's been a long while though
- ArtificialFear, on 04/02/2008, -1/+0Yes or a certain Charles Ives.
- Angostura, on 04/02/2008, -1/+1If you replace 'best' with 'immediately accessible' I'd agree with you.
- laserblazer, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1Somebody forgot Courtney Love.
- graaaag, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1I was gonna make a comment about Holst being pretty crappy compared to Debussy or Steve Reich or Stravinsky. But then i realized that i had forgotten about courtney love. She makes holst look like *****' George Crumb. amirite?
- Bologner, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1Then the 21st century belongs to Eric Whitacre.
- Tetraca, on 04/03/2008, -0/+120th century belongs to Irving Berlin.

- JustAboutReal, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3hey... it's really not a rick roll! Not much different though
however this one is actually funny, especially the terrible English grammar and Russian accents
- onionoino, on 04/02/2008, -1/+11i dont believe you
- VelvetHammer, on 04/02/2008, -0/+20If this is the shot that made the cover, I'd love to see the outtakes.

- BaoUnit, on 04/02/2008, -6/+1Is that Owen Wilson?
- saxreturns, on 04/02/2008, -2/+1Part of my university is named after Sir Adrian Boult... I'm not sure he'd be quite so proud of this one.
- Shaman760, on 04/02/2008, -2/+4One of the greatest compositions of the 20th century.
Mars, the bringer of War So freakin INTENSE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NeQ1h6lzLI&feature ...
(heh I was gonna rickroll you but decided against it.)- Depthfunction, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1I'm surprised that there haven't been any rickrolls in this thread so far.
- mccune, on 04/02/2008, -1/+1Classical music plus a gratuitous upskirt shot? That equal Digg in my book!
- jmradam, on 04/02/2008, -1/+13The music is actually pretty amazing. The track "Mars, the Bringer of War" is the basis for almost all the movie soundtracks that have to do with battle. Listen to that track and then go watch Gladiator, Independence Day, or any other epic battle movie. Or, go listen to "Jupiter" and then re-listen to the Braveheart main theme. Way ahead of its time, truly moving music.
- saxreturns, on 04/02/2008, -2/+1Mars is the only classical piece apart from Rite of Spring that makes me headbang.
- mjfitzge, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2too bad they're called Rites of Spring you poser.
- alkajazz, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1Metallica have been known to perform Mars during their live shows.
- Bologner, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1Play Super Mario Bros. 3. The airships have the theme, except it's in 4/4, not 5/4.
- saxreturns, on 04/02/2008, -2/+1Mars is the only classical piece apart from Rite of Spring that makes me headbang.
- TomT223, on 04/02/2008, -1/+7I actually dress just like that guy every day.
- laserblazer, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3Mr. Rove?
- zanthius, on 04/02/2008, -1/+1I probably would have bought 3 copies... just for backup when the first two wear out...
- BuiltToday, on 04/02/2008, -1/+0It's really not all that strange, considering that in every single sci-fi movie from the 70's, cheesy or otherwise, the composer drank liberally from the well of Holtz and his contemporaries.
Seriously, listen to The Planets and then watch freakin' 2001: A Space Odyssey!- vivaladisney, on 04/02/2008, -1/+2.....Which is from 1968.....
- tactus72, on 04/02/2008, -1/+1To tell you the truth 2001's music was taken from already established composers, being that Kubrick wasn't satisfied with the film composer he hired so he used the already established Strauss' "Also sprach Zarathustra":
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Also_sprach_Zarathust ...
or
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Also_sprach_Zarathust ...
- kallenihr, on 04/02/2008, -2/+0I was thinking Patrick Dempsey and Amanda Peterson in "Can't Buy Me Love" meets "Back to the Future"
- Wangarang, on 04/02/2008, -2/+1Looking up that skirt is turning me on.
- WinnemuccaMac, on 04/02/2008, -1/+5Holst's Jupiter suite is absolutely my favorite piece of all time. Sarah Madsen recently did a pseudo-cover that was also nice. The album art is obviously by somebody who was expecting a Flash Gordon accompaniment, and is thusly hilarious.
- userperson, on 04/02/2008, -1/+2The idea was to make classical music 'exciting'. It is exciting, but you have to draw people in and market just like every other musical-type, you have to do that if you're going to make money at it. So you could have the atypical picture of a symphony decked out in tuxes or you could have this ... Actually the typical cover probably has a better performance/recording of whatever it is, but that's for the people who are more mindful of such things... this is to draw people in... hopefully the performance/recording isn't so dreadful that it turns people off of such things. I imagine this might've pulled in a couple of Star Trek kids in its day. Maybe somebody thought it was the soundtrack to Barbarella too?
- augmentedoctave, on 04/02/2008, -2/+2Trent Reznor's new 'do is bitchin'.
- orenshk, on 04/02/2008, -1/+2Not that strange considering it's the Planet Suite. I like it.
- PointAndStare, on 04/02/2008, -1/+1The Planets doesn't need porn. Porn needs The Planets.
- turnesol, on 04/02/2008, -1/+1A wonderful set of melodies that be.
- heavystone, on 04/02/2008, -1/+9Whats the deal with the woman's crotch area? It seems wrong. I guess this is before Photoshop, so maybe they cut/pasted some other picture for her lower area. I can't get it to work.
If it was correct then her spine must be in serious need of help! Wtf? Am I the only one having a problem with this?- sipofsoma, on 04/02/2008, -0/+6I was confused by this as well.
- plup, on 04/02/2008, -0/+0You can see that she sits on her right foot. That may cause this weird look. And the skirt she's wearing is way up where it's supposed to be.

a client/college buddy opera singer who's site I designed, was in the one of the weirdest DVD productions of an opera I've ever seen. Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail ("The Abduction from the Seraglio") opens with a guy and a girl emerging into the light both completely nude, and later you see the singers wearing aprons with images of nudity all over it. It's funny to read the Amazon reviews of people not expecting it. - plainOldFool, on 04/02/2008, -1/+3hmmmmmm, reminds me of this Muse video for Knights of Cydonia

Awesome picture to use for a classical music album cover. - AManWithNoName, on 04/02/2008, -1/+2Actually, it makes perfect sense to me. Those pieces are some of the most progressive music for its time, so it only makes sense to give it a contemporary cover. I've actually played both trumpet and percussion on Jupiter before...great stuff.
