UP I say, UP! - chrismm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I learned more about tracking in the first 20 minutes of playing with the release NiN tracks than I ever knew before. Bigups to Reznor for this, and hopefully other musicians will follow suit.
- bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"As to what I'm looking to gain from doing this, I'm not really sure ... it just seemed like something I'd want as a fan." -Trent Reznor
Thank you Trent, it's nice to see musicians who care, get it, and give back. Though, I have to say, I think that attitude is more common than many realize from the artist themselves. Now if the RIAA would wake the fuhq up. - cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Reznor remains an unrepentant advocate of music files that are free from Digital Rights Management, seeing the USB drives as a convenient promotional vehicle.
"The USB drive was simply a mechanism of leaking the music and data we wanted out there," he explained. "The medium of the CD is outdated and irrelevant. It's really painfully obvious what people want - DRM-free music they can do what they want with."
Too bad CDs are outdated and irrelevant, or they just might provide that "DRM free music they can do what they want with." - artisresistance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2nin.com: "We plan to release every track on the album this way over the next few months".
- kodoTM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good old Peter Gabriel with The Filter.
Don't forget that David Bowie is supposed to be doing something similar with Nokia - he's the face of their recommendations side of things I believe. - cljordan1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I certainly wish more artists would take the proactive approach like Reznor is doing. That is awesome. Along with boosting sales, this inspires and teaches aspiring artists.
digg it, digg it.... - scooterbaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's nice to see that someone is clearly getting the point of the whole music industry. The fans.

I'm a musician, and this having prominent bands advocate this type of thing is just exciting beyond words. THIS is what we need to leave the RIAA paradigm behind. - phantasm10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I knew Trent when he was working at Pi Keyboards in Cleveland and the keyboardist for the Exotic Birds. He was a really nice guy then and really into doing a great show even at the local bars.
- darthzen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The new Barenaked Ladies album, "Are Men" includes a copy of Audacity and the files (in ogg format) for a couple of their tracks that you can remix as well.
- Trepan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As a musician, I find it hilarious when stuff like this comes out and then people think that they're suddenly musicians too, just like guitar hero.
The idea of giving out all the individual tracks to mix is cool but only in that you can put them through whatever speakers, so you could have speakers designed specifically for certain instruments.
The honest truth is, it's cool that NiN did it, but when EVERYONE does it, it will be boring. It will be just like the extra content on most dvd movies you own, you've never watched any of it. - psychicboom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1write music
- mrThefter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For a moment, I thought this was about the Canadian indie band, Stars. Great group.
No RIAA in Canada, though. =)
Anyway, I frequently hear some catchy riffs, and think about how to put them into another song...but obviously, that wouldn't sit well with the way things are currently.
Hooray for remixes and whatnot! - scooterbaga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1wrong reply...
- Bibimbap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How is he an asshat? I've never met him before, but I read a story that went something like this:
While he was recovering from his various substance abuse problems and not making music he was at a cafe near his home and some kid recognized him. The kid said he was a big fan, and was a musician as well. Kid had a bunch of ideas, and him and Trent talked for a bit, Trent liked his ideas, and invited him to his home studio where they worked for a few hours.
Everything I've heard about how Trent treats his fans is positive.
So how's he an "asshat" exactly. He is a geek though, but there's nothing wrong with that. - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Great musician, total geek.... and total asshat.... but I don't guess you get to the top of his genre for being a nice guy.
