- joevill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22How do we prove that we bought a CD ? I want $150.00 dammit!
- expiredmeatbag, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24too bad i dont buy music
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18i would use that money to help buy a Wii to compound their pain
- ldkronos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Not $150....UP TO $150.
"How much would you expect to receive? $150? NO! $100? NO!!! $50? NO WAY!!!!! You can get a settlement of just $9.99!!!! Thats right,. $9.99!!!! And as a special added bonus, we'll throw in this exploding laptop battery for free. And if you settle in the next 15 minutes, well even throw in a free copy of Sony Rootkit 2.0" - KyjL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Now where do we get our $$$s?
- trancecontrol, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"Sony BMG did not admit a law violation"
Pffttt - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10How about stop being evil in general instead?
- IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11All I want is to be reimbursed for the damage to my hearing due to what Sony claims is "music."
- Crossmenjeff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8that is the dumbest thing i've read today. even if all you did was read the summary you'd know how dumb you were. Surely someone agrees
/no one cares you were sarcastic - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/titles.html
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Keep your $150, I wouldn't admit to purchasing any of those cds...
like seriously why bother copy protecting half that crap? just be glad someone is listening to it.
/glad no one will try pull this fast one on consumers again - lowerlogic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Since the RIAA is known to sue up to $150,000 per downloaded song ( http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/RIAA-sues-college-students-part-two----150_000--per-song.html ) and since there's probably 12 songs or so on each of these CDs, shouldn't we be getting at least $1,800,000.00 per CD in "damages" :D.
- phantom_mullet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Hey, and while we're at it, we should give their CEO a paper cut and pour lemon juice on it.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5It wasn't me. It was the one armed man!
- lilricky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A broken computer? The DRM didn't physically break the computer, a reformat and reinstall will completely fix your computer, that is, if you don't trust Sony's uninstall software. Are you confusing this with the exploding battery problem?
- SIRBERUS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@carpespasm
So I guess we have to wait until Sony publishes, "If I Infected Them." ? - kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Graci, thankfully I don't own any of those ***** albums.
- IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Isn't sarcasm supposed to be funny? Because that wasn't.
- FatHed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2$150 to cover data loss of unknown value, plus you probably need receipts. Nice job FTC of doing nothing. If they had included the fact that the software existed on the CD then none of this would have happened. Sure Sony/BMG would have screwed up peoples computers, but there wouldn't be anything else about it other than a hate filled site of rants about it.
- rfeldbauer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm glad they're being forced to pay up at least. If I remember correctly, some of the initial settlement offers included giving consumers another CD for free, or other equally ridiculous terms.
- lilricky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whats your point?
- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3it seems nothing really going right for Sony anymore, except the Sony Ericsson phones...
- stublag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Edgy. As. *****.
- kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2List of albums with said trash on them?
- alx242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is not the same company that made the root-kit that are making the PS3. People connect Sony BMG with SCEA and it is unwise. One is a music and entertainment publisher, the other a software and hardware developer. It kind of explains why one sucked at trying what others should be doing (aka making software).
Neither would I connect one wrong move with everything else a company does, that is what is called fan-boyism... - alx242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@gerkin:
Wrong! Ericsson exists still. The Sony/Ericsson is a joint venture of both companies... - Crossmenjeff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you had to be part of the suit, the application for that came out like half a year ago. Maybe some legal beagle can explain how joining a suit after its settled works
- dawgma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does this settlement apply to CD's purchased in other countries as well? Or just the States?
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4How is $150 supposed to compensate for a broken computer?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where do I claim my reward? I got one of the nasty cd's that installed whether you agreed to the EULA or not (Kasabian).
In one of their previous settlements, their offer was to give me a free download of the album from Sony's ***** online music service (now non-existent) in exchange for mailing them the cd. My ass!!!!!!!!!! - wheeliedude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now all we need is a reason to use CONNECT.
Oh wait...
Conspiracy? - Sgurdcrimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is the age of big brother here or being kicked in the face...... i can't quite tell..... who knows how discreet other companies could be with these unknown installed programs or information about whats on our computers being sent to corporate dick faces???????????
Sony could just be really crappy at it ya know? i mean they made a so called "overpowerful system" that plays crappy games, so maybe they suck at everything else they do??
who knows - UKMusicFan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$150 doesn't seem much when you work out the inconvenience involved. Still, no-one important is complaining so it looks like that's all the users are going to get.
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2To little too late. Sony, you suck and we don't buy your crappy CD's anymore.
- kidronin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Here is a list of the 52 CD's with the XCP content protection technology.
http://cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/titles.html
p.s. if you own anything on this list, your taste in music sucks. - aerogant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess they are buying their way out of setting a legal standard that could affect their other markets (like games).
- gerkin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1ya but they just bought that company out .. that doesn't count
- lilricky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I see Amazon sales on certain music cd titles spiking in the next few days..... Lets see, $5.00 for a Sony cd infested with their DRM, and I can turn that into $150? I can just imagine the ebay auctions, $99 for Bette Midler Sings the Peggy Lee Songbook :)
- monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it's like the "up to 90% off" sign you see in stores, then you realize it's something totally useless that's 90% off.
I wonder what do you need to do in order to get $150.
Maybe they'll compensate you for up to $150* of the repair cost
*Sony will compensate you 0.1% of the repair cost for up to $150. - grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27 million copies sold * $150 per CD. Ouch, there goes another billion dollars.
Sadly, it is only a ruling in the US, overseas customers are not so lucky. - Joopndufus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, ``Shine'' by Trey Anastasio is really good. Flatt and Scruggs, Frank Sinatra and Shel Silverstein are all good as well. I have no insight into the musical taste of Diggers, however.
- SIRBERUS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0from the link of titles listed:
"Note: Three titles — Ricky Martin, "Life"; Peter Gallagher, "7 Days in Memphis"; and a limited number of “Hidden Beach Presents Unwrapped Vol. 4” — were released with a content protection grid on the back of the CD packaging but XCP content protection software was not actually included on the albums."
Gotta love it...
"Sorry guys, but those CDs were just protected by scare tactics." - techmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, you just simply have no musical taste.
- scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1you people are honestly happy about 150? I can't understand this.. I mean its a large settlement as these kinds of things go but it nowhere near compensates for what sony did. they should be bankrupt over the settlement that they have to pay.
- dubled, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Attention all Large corporations who think they can bully consumers and force their will upon us. This is what happens, you get a boot up your ass and everybody hates on you.
- schabrat14, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1yay!!! We Win :P
- crlake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What! What in the hell is $150 bucks suppose to pay for, the electricity bill? Because it sure the hell isn’t going to pay for the inconvenience, the down time, the “red tape” Sony fix, or the repairs their little stunt caused. $150 bucks doesn’t even pay for a legal copy of WindowsXP. The next time SonyBMG runs crying the government about piracy, this is why.
The same CD could have been purchased for about a $1.10, with less has hassle and bullsh*t. The song would have been on the dam iPod six months ago, and we’d all move on with our lives. But No...
- $15-18 dollars for the CD
- $???? for downtime/weekends gone
$150 bucks, what a joke -- Sony owe a couple thousand. - mikolupi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Cool But what if its a $2000 laptop?
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2hmmm
$600 PS3 - 25% discount Sony is offering = $150.
