- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you need a music player and manager, but want to go the open source route, try musikCube:
http://www.musikcube.com/
It recognizes and syncs to external devices, whether an MP3 player or external hard drive or USB stick. It will rip CDs, but it doesn't burn CDs. But neither is it cluttered with links to Web sites, because musikCube is not a Web browser with a media player added to it. It's just a music player and music file manager with a stripped down iTunes-like interface. - roblord, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Enjoy gents. I'm Rob on the Songbird team. Any questions?
- chrishill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4+digg
been waiting for this for a while.
Rob, I know you cant 'legally' include iPod support, and that the development community will probably solve that issue fairly quickly, but what about other devices? Any plans to ape WMP's sync system? I'd rather use songbird to sync up my GoGear rather than WMP.
Nice work, enjoying the POC download as I type. :) - yihpin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3super mini review:
it seems like a sound package so far. I'm having a little difficulty adjusting to the interface, but that's to be expected. Also, a lot of functionality seems to be missing or difficult to use, especially with the web playlists. but it plays my tracks just fine and that's enough for now.
i love the fact that it's tightly integrated with the web. With sites like Pandora and last.fm, the music experience is no longer confined to a single player. If Songbird can successfully encapsulate my entire music experience in a single program, then I'm onboard. - roblord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh crap. We have been *DUGG*. Um, it's 5am. I'll try to get the site back up soon. Our FAQs will answer most of the current questions. Be back soon...

- enovakrss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ all the lamers complaining
it's a preview release, not a stable and final product. - davidhgc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Looks good, but how do you configure a Proxy connection, I guess that is the end of my web testing :-(
- domusvita, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So far I don't see a bunch of hope in this project:
"Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)" - westfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha, it's funny how people claim this is stealing iTunes' inteface. Apple stole the design in the first place! http://www.neowin.net/index.php?act=view&id=32257 You Apple fanboys need to give it a rest.
- STKD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"WINAMP = BAD
http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/02/06/127258"
Of course if you're surfing random sites that are likely to contain such exploits, you're an idiot in the first place. Why don't they go click on all those pop-ups while they're at it?
Natural selection. Idiots bring about their own problems, and it leaves the web slightly more free for people who know how to not do stupid things. It's a rather genius system really. - MikeyC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe have a look at this before downloading: http://digg.com/software/Songbird_KaBoom_Recursive_Loop_Exploit
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i don't know, Songbird is a little bit too similar to Itunes. It's almost designed to attack Itunes. Strange.
- rasko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1same here - "Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)"
- CantDiggIt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why is the bird farting in each pic? - http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:http://www.songbirdnest.com/
- mono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Songbird doesn't yet recognize CD drives, so it can't import. I don't yet see a means to subscribe to podcasts, nor sync with any MP3 devices. I don't really want/care about a web browser integrated into my music player/organizer. I hope it improves, but really nothing at all to see here.
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Regardless of everyone's thoughts on the viability of the project or its shortfalls. I congratulate the songbird dev team on actually doing something above and beyond simply sitting at your computer and clicking aimlessly at digg headlines. I for one enjoy the end result of software development. And of course, I like using XMMS as much as the next guy, but I don't bash the efforts of a nicely named OSS project.
- TheQwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1site's down. Who can tell me what this offers over amarok?
- oblivinated, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How sad, no support for languages other than English. iTunes does this very well, particularly with Japanese and Chinese. For me, iTunes has the best feature-to-size (and memory consumption) ratio.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1but will it play itunes riddled DRM AAC (the new AOL for music lovers)???
- MikeSavior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm perfectly aware this is far from an official release, with that said, I see first of all (maybe it's just me)
- I have maybe.. what, 3000 songs? mp3 and AAC, and songbird only wants to bother with the tags on some of them. The tags are valid, all organized, but Songbird doesn't want to have anything to do with my id3v2.4 tags. It only checks out part of them if at all, too.
Also: Where's an options dialog?
And XULrunner.exe takes up 40-60mb of ram at the start. I dunno what's up with that.. maybe my fault for such a large collection?
Also, if you use the backend that gtkpod uses for linux, you can get ipod support in on Songbird. That same exact backend is what runs EphPod for windows.
Other than that, I hope this project goes far, 'cause I know it has bigtime potential, and I know, it's an early release, so I shouldn't expect the best thing ever right away. ;) - smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is obvious some people on here don't really see the true potential of Songbird. Given some time I'm willing to bet that it will be the media player of choice.
Rob you guys have done an amazing job thus far, continue the excellent work.
And on a personal note to all those saying its an iTunes clone, it looks more like amaroK to me. Maybe a mix between the two. For those using Windows you have no idea what amaroK is, and songbird is the closest thing to it right now, buggy or not. I can't even begin to imagine the plugins for this application.
How about a "Songbird Network" plugin that uses the Google maps API and shows you the location of all the people currently listening to the same artist as you? What about a plugin that will let you see the locations/dates of that artists upcoming tour? Seriously, this program is going to own. - OperatorNo9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow. What jerks some people are. Do you even listen to yourselves?
"I know it's a proof of concept release, but that doesn't mean I can't expect it to be perfect, right?"
Seriously? Do you hear yourself?
"I'm not dumping my media player for it just yet. I'll hold off until I see the finished product."
Not trading your mature and stable media player for a technology preview? Oh, how savvy of you. I bet you're the type to wait until your food is cooked before you eat it. Freakin genius, this one.
Please, excuse their manners, Rob. Songbird shows a great deal of promise and support. Best of luck. And kudos for taking the time to participate here at digg. - d0zy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2http://s35.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=14RW7TK15DUSQ108937KFNF1IF
there's a copy for the first few that get 2 it - (.)(.), on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Obviously not many people here know what a "proof of concept" means.
- terrasque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent proof of concept. I agree that a few features are missing though. The maximization issue needs works, Its covering my start menu, but my largest complaint is not being able to remove the so called "services" from the left hand column. Having things there that i simply don't use and get in the way ruins it for me.
- bieber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like the looks of it from the screenshot, but is it to remain Windows only? What's the point of releasing a great piece of free software if you have to use a proprietary OS for it to work?
- shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The launch can't even handle the digg effect? Poor planning!
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, I'd add the iPod support if I could get access to the thing. It looks like it would be easy enough to do. I don't know what the "legal" problem mentioned above is, but iPod support is easy to do.
- atariby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Review: http://atariboy.wordpress.com/2006/02/08/songbird-preview-released/
- mattjb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's a little buggy as expected, as it won't import my collection of music, but from what I can do, it is definitely promising. I personally love the interface, a lot of smart UI decisions here, and I like it's ease of use. Great proof of concept, I can't wait to see this software get fleshed out. Good job, Songbird team.
- whalesalad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0SITES DOWN, but in good classic Digg manner, LETS KEEP DIGGING IT!!! Heheh check out the coralized links.
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well I am trying it out right now.... only problem is that my id3 tags are "slowly" showing up... I have about 3300 songs tagged and it seems its going to take at least twenty minutes to load all the id3 tags (although scanning and finding the songs and adding them to the library was WAYYY faster than iTunes I'll admit.. just id3 tag scanning needs to be sped up).
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am risking coming across like an ass, but here goes: I've been tinkering with this, and so far it looks like nothing more than a (very buggy at this point, of course) media player with a mess of links to music-related Web sites (paid and free download services, music streaming, etc.). There are even links to the Yahoo and Google music search engines. Um, what's the big deal?
So far, this is reminding me of a music version of Flock. In other words, you can assemble all these links yourself under Firefox, and install an exension which will call up your favorite media player.
I'm disappointed. Because (at least from the initial impression I was getting from other blogs I was reading about Songbird on), I was imagining this to be an iTunes-like program which somehow manages to access and catalog music and media files that are put on the Web for free and legally so, and then arranging the results in a neat, orderly fashion. Now THAT kind of media front-end would be cool and revolutionary. - enovakrss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Itt will be multiplatform
- inc4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if not already mentioned put your comments / questions ethier in email or join us on irc.freenode.net #songbird. We may not be around immediatly to answer and rob and a few other developers are there. Just put your stuff there and feedback will get into the right hands. Thank you.
--Inc
(my alias on there is inc) - MikeSavior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, one more bug- All songs seem to play with an echo. As if in a large hall. And it's not small either. It's extremely noticable.
- FZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the play-lists should appear on a separate pane to allow drag'n'drop. As it is now you can drag stuff to a play-list on the pane, but this requires good, er, mousemanship and doesn't allow you to drag a song to a specific position.
Another thing that could be better is the handling of media vs. streaming links. There should be a separator between them or something like that. Songbird also seems to be ignoring id3 information from remote files - quite annoying. Anyway, it's a cool app and looks very promising! - ascheinberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm being COMPLETELY serious when I say this, but is it just me, or is the bird in the Songbird logo farting?! In every picture it's got a little puff of wind coming from its butt! What is THAT about?
- jocknerd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Looks like maybe you guys need to switch from MySQL to PostgreSQL.
- MattH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rob made the same mistake when his Popcast was released not enough servers for the /. effect.
- jdpixel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0very interesting - I look forward to tracking its development, but for now I agree with TheWriteGuy - musikcube is fantastic.
- westfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm loving it so far except for a few things here and there. Sorting by column would be nice. Can't wait for the next release!
- Noelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This software can lick my Winamp taint!
- kalphegor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what about wasabi player? anybody remember it? open-source, cross-platform, etc.
- keybsnbits, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Songbird should just read the itunes xml file, kinda like when Firefox asks you if you want to import your settings/bookmarks from IE.
- mono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK. I take it back about podcast subscriptions. It's just not that intuitive to add a feed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yikes, took me about 5 mins to get rid of it. I'll stick with winamp and ASIO.
- MindTrigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Looks like a neat concept. A little too raw for me yet, but congratulations on the launch! I will keep an eye out for future versions. - davs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)".
