- theshizzler, on 03/22/2009, -0/+49Interesting, because Chamberlain was the only member who was friendly with Billy Corgan.
- monkeyshines, on 03/23/2009, -2/+40From the website:
"The SMASHING PUMPKINS' guitarist, singer, songwriter and founding member Billy Corgan has announced that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has left the group. Chamberlin joined the band Corgan founded in Chicago in 1988 and played on all their albums except Adore (1998). Corgan will continue to write and record as SMASHING PUMPKINS with plans to head into the studio this spring."
I find it interesting that Jimmy Chamberlain is leaving the band, but the article sounds like it's about Billy Corgan. In fact, Corgan's name is mentioned more times too.
The Smashing Pumpkins were easily one of my favorite bands growing up. I'd have rather they stopped making music altogether than drag this out as far as it has come. What a shame. - sdigroup, on 03/22/2009, -5/+41You can blame the ego of Billy Corgan,
- Tiptup300, on 03/23/2009, -5/+40Smashing Pumpkins? I'm sorry, Gish & Siamese Dream may be my favorite albums of all time, but their new stuff is horrible.
PS: I also really liked Melon Collie & infinite sadness. - zdiddy85, on 03/22/2009, -5/+34I guess he finally came to his senses. Corgan's a douche.
- cannonball, on 03/23/2009, -0/+28Say what you want about Billy Corgan, but he is a really good guy.
My mother was a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan, and they meant the world to her. Unfortunately, a few years ago she was diagnosed with stage-4 cancer which meant it was terminal. The Smashing Pumpkins fan club had sent the news to Billy, and he made the effort to call her, exchange emails, and eventually meet in person.
That really made her happy. She bragged to everyone that she met her idol, and I think it was one of the nicest gestures a complete stranger could do for a true fan.
I wish the best of luck to both Billy and Jimmy. And I wish to thank Billy for making my mother happy. - kevlar21, on 03/23/2009, -2/+28I imagine he was the primary pumpkin smasher, being in percussion and all. What will they ever do?
- JasonAdams13, on 03/23/2009, -5/+30So can we stop calling them the Pumpkins yet?
- spaceaudi0, on 03/23/2009, -4/+23Billy Corgan maybe a douchebag, but he is a musical genius who has contributed many great songs to the 90s.
- mattofasia, on 03/23/2009, -2/+18Billy will have to change his name to "The Smashing Pumpkin."
- sarchosis, on 03/23/2009, -2/+18Again?
- ZER0JACK, on 03/23/2009, -0/+16"Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins."
"Homer Simpson, smiling politely." - twiztidsinz, on 03/23/2009, -1/+16Members

I went to the concert for the Adore album and it still rates as the worst gig I've ever been to. Mind you, Corgan started the show by announcing to his fans "All of you wearing Zero shirts: Get the ***** over it." So it was only destined for failure.
- kisstributeuk, on 03/23/2009, -2/+14Oh Bugger! Had the pleasure of working for/with Mr Chamberlin at Drumfest 2005 - opened my eyes and ears as to how much he was a songwriting/arranging force in SP...
- DavidTurnbull, on 03/23/2009, -0/+12Has someone been spreading rumors that I've died?
- IamNomad, on 03/23/2009, -1/+13Needs more D'arcy. She never disappointed on stage.
After everyone from the original crew left.. t
he show was just Billy and friends. just wasnt the same - SmackAttack42, on 03/23/2009, -0/+11their music? like, the music they don't make anymore because they left?
- rivalthecreator, on 03/23/2009, -14/+25Smashing Pumpkins are still together?
- twiztidsinz, on 03/23/2009, -0/+11"The band suffered a personal tragedy on the night of July 11, 1996, when touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin and Chamberlin overdosed on heroin in a hotel room in New York City. Melvoin died, and Chamberlin was arrested for drug possession. A few days later, the band announced that Chamberlin had been fired as a result of the incident." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smashing_pumpkins
- mhummel, on 03/23/2009, -4/+15At least he didn't spontaneously combust, choke on vomit or suffer a bizarre gardening accident.
- Dinsdale77, on 03/23/2009, -1/+11His amazing syncopation was one of the best things about that band.
- JenX1985, on 03/23/2009, -3/+13They haven't been "The Smashing Pumpkins" for a long time, not from their very poetic, amazing days long gone. They are now a corporate brand to bring in the bucks, lead by Billy Corgan the once brilliant singer/song writer, turn ego douche.
It really is a shame.
As silly as it may sound, I really, well I thought I really loved Billy Corgan and the rest, then I saw a few live interviews with the guy, boy did that change my mind. I have a feeling that a good piece of that band was the Asian fellow and the blond lady (who I believe owns a large ranch now and is a horse breeder?)

The smashing pumpkins, as they are today, are stagnant and irrelevant. On the other hand, Jimmy Chamberlin is and will always be one of the most skilled, consistent, and influential rock drummers on the scene. I look forward to hearing him with a different band, which is a welcome change from me not giving a ***** about the pumpkins last cd. Even his solo album, Life Begins Again by the Jimmy Chamberlin Complex, was a solid outing on his part. I wouldn't mind another one of those.
Frankly, I would greatly appreciate anything that he did that was not "Smashing Pumkins." Jimmy Chamberlin is the reason that I began to play the drums. Everything that he has done since then has reinforced that inspiration, including Zwan (so Billy Corgan is not necessarily the issue), but I simply can't be enthusiastic about the Smashing Pumpkins resurrection. It doesn't do it for me.
I could see Jimmy going for a complete change of scenery and finding great success. - kanimara, on 03/23/2009, -1/+9They should have stopped trying to keep up with pop culture, and just kept making the music they were good at making. Metallica is guilty of that too. They try to change with the times, and they shouldn't because they're not very good at it.
- Shirleycakes, on 03/23/2009, -0/+7Nah, they "reuinited" and released an album last year, though it was only Corgan and Chamerlain.
- bajesus, on 03/23/2009, -0/+7If you think Adore was there weakest album you must not have heard Machina or Zeitgiest
- MadHarvey, on 03/23/2009, -1/+8Psst.
We don't use the 'G' word around Billy anymore.
Though it may be true, no good has come of him thinking it. - azpat, on 03/23/2009, -1/+8I guess lightning isn't going to strike twice for the pumpkins. Oh well, I mean, that makes the original stuff all the more special.
- inactive, on 03/23/2009, -0/+7*****. Jimmy was one of the most rock solid, dynamic drummers I've ever heard.
- inigomntoya, on 03/23/2009, -0/+7"Oldies"? You sound like they used to open for the Beach Boys or something...
- frankdozier, on 08/10/2009, -2/+9What? Jimmy was the pulse of the music. adore was their weakest album BECAUSE of Jimmy's absence
- theskillwithin, on 03/23/2009, -1/+7yes, but they were only trying to scare him.
they didnt really want to kick him out.
he went on a drug bing and was blind for 3 days. thats why they did it - chambana, on 03/23/2009, -0/+6not in that quote or on half their album covers
- terracottapai, on 03/23/2009, -1/+7I saw them in 2006.
It was alright, but I think it's time to retire the Smashing Pumpkins name, unless all 4 are back together.
Until then it should just be Corgan solo, and if he wants to play Pumpkins songs, whatever, but anything new should be branded as just his. - srt4b, on 03/23/2009, -0/+6So many thing wrong with this comment.
First drummer=Jiimmy
Jimmy was fired for using Drugs in 1997
Jimmy returned in 1999 right at the end of the alternative music bubble. - fezzasus, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5"lose a drummer"
how many do you think they have? - ShirtSizeXXXLXT, on 03/23/2009, -1/+6Wow how ironic. Remember when they gave his ass the boot back when he was all Mr. Druggie? Cleaned himself up and rejoined the band, and now he can't stand Corgans control freak attitude. My grandma would love to hear this news.
- pmpk, on 03/23/2009, -0/+5Except that Zwan was actually pretty good, partially because they weren't trying be the Smashing Pumpkins.
- FriedTurkey, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4Usually a drummer doesn't matter than much when they leave but Chamberlain's drumming had its own style. The new CD was actually good in a few songs with the drumming kicking serious ass. Pumpkins without Chamberlain will probably be more lame Zwan stuff.
- nirvgorilla, on 03/23/2009, -1/+5As the original Pumpkins, they did some really good stuff. An example is the last minute or so of Thru the Eyes of Ruby on the Mellon Collie album. Also, the last track on the second disc "Farewell & Goodnight" was one of the most incredible outro tracks on any album I've heard.
It IS a shame that the Pumpkins are dragging their name through the mud like this. - pmpk, on 03/23/2009, -2/+6I stopped calling them the Pumpkins they hired fake James and fake D'Arcy and called it a "reunion".
- pmpk, on 03/23/2009, -2/+6Who cares if Ginger is still there?
Fake D'Arcy < (Real D'Arcy || Melissa Auf Der Maur) - inactive, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4I'm not an expert on the band, so correct me if I'm wrong: I thought one of their *last* hits, Ava Adore, was released in 1998. That's 11 years ago. I haven't heard much from them since then.
Again, not an expert on the band. Maybe they've been top of the charts ever since and I missed it. Not trying to offend fans. - nanowerx, on 03/23/2009, -0/+4Live Zwan was very good...the recorded stuff was meh. Check out almost any of their live material and you will be blown away at how much that band clicked together and made some awesome music.
Frankly I wished Zwan would have stayed around. - brownsound00, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3One of the things Jimmy did well is utilized the easy beats. Or at least made them sound easy. He didn't over do it, and matched the songs emotion with the appropriate drum beat. His fills we freakin awesome too... and his drumming really added a lot of the aggressive songs... instead of just keep the tempo in the background.
- Stark, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3Except that Chamerlain was in Zwan
- brownsound00, on 03/23/2009, -1/+4Without James? Iha was the *****... he gave SP their sound!
- exspasticcomics, on 03/23/2009, -2/+5LOL.. not really.
- IamNomad, on 03/23/2009, -0/+3I saw her play at a SP show in Chicago ..mainly went for the opening band to be honest
It just wasn't the same. Eye candy or not. -
