- lurker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Slipknot did not invent that look. I should sue slipknot for making bad music.
- TheChance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't believe this is happening. "OH S***! THEY WEAR MASKS TOO! SUE SUE SUE!" For christ's sake, Slipknot should go with a more descriptive name, like Toolbox.
- h0dge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the sad thing is, the guys in the commercial look better and sound better than slipknot -_-
- adminmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1true. while it IS a technology website. it is user run. so we submit the stories.
and that guy acting like a digg nazi isn't going to make people stop submitting not 100% tech related things. and it also wont get rid of the 1,000's of non-tech related stories. - spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nobody should sue burger king for a lame commercial, and nobody should be suprised that people like slipknot are suing somebody.
- masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You do realize that having to resort to "get a life" is just about the most pathetic you can get, right? More pathetic than you think I am, in fact. It shows that you've run out of any points whatsoever and that your only chance of saving face whatsoever is to attempt a low blow of me being some sort of idiot without a life. But guess what, I happen to have a life. The sort where I don't always have time to wade through 3 pages of this sort of crap in a vain attempt to find some relevant tech news that this site is actually made to hold. It just so happens that there's literally nothing to do at this time and arguing on Digg is just as valid an option as anything else. At least it isn't as pointless as other options.
Oh, and I somehow don't see how you could think you have any more of a life than I do, considering the circumstances, so it wasn't even a good shot at all. Overall, you fail the Effort, Wit, and Effectiveness categories. You fail life. - slimbilly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you guys are all wrong. slipknot isn't suing because of the look. it's because coqroq currently sucks in a way that was, before the commercial, entirely unique to slipknot.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why does EVERYTHING on digg have to be about tech. Nowher on the site does it say "tech news" in the catagories movies is an option. This is music. Digg is a "Social Bookmarking Site", Kevin Rose; Diggnation. The internet is more than tech. Digg is news. This is news.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The advertising firm for BK did say "we found Slipknot to be our inspiration for the campaign". I know wearing mask is no new thing (The ancient greeks should sue), but the style of these mask do almost directly resemble some of the mask from Slipknot members. It is obvious that BK has "lost" the "laid back" crowd to McDonalds with their new ad campaigns and instead of copying MickyD's they went after a diffrent crowd. The new-age hardcore crowd. Slipknot is probably the most recognizable and popular band to come from that group and survive up to now. The band does have a point, but legal action is the wrong move and i am sure it has more to do with their label and managers than the actual band members. I would wait until a more "legitimate" news source covers this before we make any assumptions.
BTW Slipknot puts on one of the best shows EVER. Next to CoqRoq! - Gofast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1iccalhhoun
I no watt your say'in. I couldn't egregious moor.
Geeks right code, knot English
:-) - djtripp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yup, GWAR was my first thought.
- freemdoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Coq Roq owns Slipknot.
- Gofast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Masterzora,
The banter is fun but it's time for me to crash. Go find someone else to type at.
L8 - salweem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And you have no life.
- masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hockey masks aren't my thing. They imply sports. But the chain saw...
Sure, no problem. What's double zero? I can't figure that one out. - mojaam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Burger King are simply pathetic. Their commercials are the worst.
- freemdoom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The hell with the lawsuit, this is brilliant advertising.
And not only can you download mp3's, you can freakin' download Garageband tracks! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Digg Police" come on get a life.
- instereo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LMFAO BURKEY KING.
I think I'll stick to my Coldplay and Fiona Apple.. - Gofast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0porkpie666 - Dude, you are going to get hammered for promoting your site on digg
Good Luck brother
PS: What the F, I'll check it out - N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Slipknot did not invent that look. I should sue slipknot for making bad music.
and
Maybe GWAR should sue Slipknot then.
win, hands down. don't even argue. - Mahchew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If they are ganna sue them. They might as well sue KoRn.
- hellking1160z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0for one ppl stop saying slipknot sucks because thats like me saying ur fav band sucks just becasue i dont like the music and 2
i think slipknot shcould sue them because i dont like bk becasue there food isnt all that good and pluss that music an that bk ad just sucked so bad - Jersey2FL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lawsuit would be stupid.
That commercial is nasty- Chicken Fries, ehh.
But the stupid costumes did make me think of Slipknot. - godmode, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1dude Elton John should totally sue Slipnot for dressing like homosexuals while performing.
- MusicZK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0First of all I would like to point out that I am a pretty big slipknot fan. And even though some of their beliefs and lyrics are contreversial, I still like the music they create.
I think what they are doing by suing BK is a huge mistake. I mean, the commercial had nothing to do with slipknot, and they weren't the first ones to invent masks ya know? This just makes them look like money hungry artists which is wrong.
And in response to the post before this. What are you talking about? I mean I respect Ozzy and all. Love his music, but look at his image behind the music. He used drugs, and I don't want to say he was a huge stoner, but I dont think that image is any better than today's. I mean sure, some artists have characterists that make them stick out form the crowd, but thats the great thing about music. You can express what you believe and what you stand for. Some of that Rap stuff really crosses the line with talk of sex, drugs, and violence. But as far as the image goes, it really isnt bad. If you dont like slipknot, then dont listen to um! - adminmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0masterzora. i fully understand where your comming from. when you come to a technology site like digg. your hoping to see... well technology. but it is nice to have a little spice thrown in the mix to keep it fresh. i mean. microsoft started out JUST selling windows OS. but if they JUST devoted thier company to OS's then we wouldn't have the xbox.
- jccalhoun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've only heard a little bit of Slipknot's music, but the BK commercial doesn't sound anything like Slipknot from my (admittedly limted) experience. I would think that would be a big negative against Slipknot's claim.
As far as parody, however, I don't think it would count because if they are using Slipknot as the inspiration for the ads, while they are making a funny commercial, they are not making fun of Slipknot so much as using Slipknot to make humor, so I don't think it would count as parody.
This is like the Penny Arcade strip where they got in trouble for parodying American McGee by making a goth Strawberry Shortcake. The company that owns Strawberry Shortcake sent a cease and desist to them because they weren't making fun of Strawberry Shortcake, but using the character to make fun of someone else. - hollowmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought the BK commercial was hilarious. It points out how ridiculous the image behind music has become.
- RabidFurby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Slipknot...(contains laughter).... HAHAHAHA SLIPKNOT! Who cares... really now, cmon.
- Misos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hate people who sue over stupid ***** like this. I hope Slipknot goes bankrupt.
- Gofast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0porkpie66 - By definition digg is a technology news website
Check it; http://digg.com/submit
Truth is......... You're right, I really don't give a sh*t that diggers submit pop culture content - knid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I have to say is that when I first saw that commercial I thought that it was Slipknot.
It took me a few seconds to realize that it was not.
I can see how they may have gotten a bit too close to the band's image. - ithonicfury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Justified or not, I'm all for anything that gets rid of those commercials.
Making commercials with such a level of stupidity that makes people want to destroy the tv in a futile effort to banish the commercial from their minds should be against the law anyway.
Its even gotten to the point where a mike's hard lemonade commercial is no longer a break from the pathedic commercials forced on people anymore, as they've stooped to the level of brand recognition through annoying and stupid ads.
Whoever is selling these companies on stupid must be doing a real good job, maybe the company's ad dept. should pay more attention to how they're being duped into producing such horrid debaucheries of 30 second retardation and less on what the people giving them ideas are actually talking about. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Are you serious. You have to resort to "huh huh I have a life". I am just saying if you don't like the story don't read it and move onto another that is more your style. Your not getting paid to be "digg police" and the term "digg police" goes against everything that people like about the site. The tech news is not going away. Go recompile your kernel, then when you come back this will be buried under more "tech" stories and you may rejoice. Music is recorded using computers, the story was on a news WEB SITE on a server. Technology surrounds this story.
Life I have failed? Not by the least. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lol bunch of morons.
http://ccdigg.blogspot.com/
Coffee - jsk2001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some money hungry lawyer put them up to it..."Hey slipknot, want to make some extra bucks or atleast make some publicity? you can't lose!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad things got kinda heated, I am to blame. Sometimes I am just a bit to agressive about things that don't really matter. Sorry for filling up the comments with non slipknot sueing *****. Commence the lashings!
Check out www.ransomtv.com in sept. I have 2 new shows coming out, one is like a daily show for the internet culture and one is a debate video game show. Both with high production value, full sets, and 3 camera shoots. You know like real TV. - salweem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The people who say they suck probably never listened to them and are posers, jocks and *****.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0God this is stupid. People will sue anyone for just about anything these days.
Better not let your kids wear masks for Halloween this year, Slipknot could sue! - adminmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what else is pathetic is you writing a paragraph trying to justify your douche-baggery.
he's right. get a life. i stopped reading that two sentences in. just out of its TRUE boring structure. - Gage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm thinking that Slipknot talked to Lars and Metallica about how to appear like spoiled babies to their fans.
- shoeberto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't like Slipknot, but I hate these commercials even more. They're stupid and overly long. Ugh.
- masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If that's all they wanted, they'd change the description. Suddenly everybody will be happy because those people could now post all the idiocy they wanted and we wouldn't have grounds to complain. But they don't. Because it's a technology news website and that's that. If you don't like it, leave and go to del.icio.us and Fark.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gwar is great. At their concert they had a blood pit at the front and people would go on stage and be thrown in there. Several Gwar members were around the blood pit with axes and swords to keep the people in, then they threw in all sorts of gross looking stuff. Now *that's* entertainment!
Oh, and yeah I like Green Jelly too. Another very original band. As they say, "We were the world's best video-only band until we came out with this record, making us hypocrites as well as liars with no talent." Three Little Pigs rocked :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well it has been dugg 220 times and the owners more than anything want the users to be happy. You don't seem to understand what business really is, do you?
- ArcaneDevice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Slipknot are suing? Yeah, that's really living up to your anarchic rock crazed image.
They should live up to the reputation they are trying to protect and go and do some crazy rock stunt at a Burger King joint instead. Weak. - paintist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I said "wannabe" punk. Meaning... not punk. I know punk too, my brother used to work at 924 Gilman and rest assurred he's given me a clear understand of what punk is.
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0just wanting to state that the hole coqroq.com thing was made to be viral advertising kinda wondering if it is possible that burger king is doing this as a promotional stunt to get the name out there more
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0punk? um no. Hardcore yes. Slipknot resembles 0 from punk music.
BTW i use to only listen to punk when I was in high school and college the started liking other music just as much, and now I listen to slipknot and other newage metal bands just as much as i listen to punk bands like swindle and bad religion. -
