What is the difference in going to the local library and barrowing a CD with music on it, or downloading music from the Internet? When you turn one the radio are you not listing to shared music? Is it illegal to drop a cassette tape into a radio with a tape deck and record hours of music to be listen to later when you cannot tune in that particular radio station?
I used to have over 1000 LP's (not to mention “45’s”). Was it illegal to copy them to a cassette tape in order to listen to the music while driving in my automobile? What about these DVR’s that are available to record [copy] a TV show or sports broadcast? Those TV shows and sports broadcast are all copyrighted material. Isn’t that the same as downloading music from the internet? Everyone who signs on to the Internet are automatically downloading copyrighted material, texts, images, and even music that may be supporting one of the websites. If the courts are prosecuting people who down copyrighted music, then to be fair to the doctrine of “Equal Protection under the Law” they should be prosecuting everyone who logs on to the Internet. This thing that RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is doing is nothing more than a witch hunt.
Music sharing, what does it mean? Does it mean that when I purchase a music CD that I can only listen to it in the privacy of myself? If I barrow a CD from a public library, do I then only have the right to listen to it in the privacy of myself. (Do have to use earphone so that only I can hear it). What the hell is the difference between barrowing it for the library or from some website one the Internet? TELL ME!!! The Internet is the World Wide library of information, just the same as a public library. Are these record companies going after public libraries for sharing the copyrighted material that they have?
Music to the soul is like food to the body. Music wrapped up in the memories of our life. I can see the record companies going after people for download music to be pressed to a CD that will be sold. The music of our lives has become the fabric of our lives. Many times you find a music CD and there are only 1 or 2 songs that you like; how many people consolidation many of the song from there library of CDs all on CD so that they can listen to it while driving in there car. Let me tell you something, unless you’ve driven for a living do you really understand the importance of being able to consolidate a lot of their music collections on to 1 or 2 CDs or tape cassette. It makes it possible to listen to your favorite music without have to change the media device for every song.
Or how about that particular song that you can’t get out of your head; you can’t remember the title, or even the performer. Whenever you’re lucky enough to hear it on the radio (particularly in this day of automated formats) the station doesn’t inform you who the artist is, or the title of the song. You know just a few words to the song, it’s handy though to be able to go on the Internet and type those few words on a music search engine and have the website respond with song titles and artist names that you can download so you can hear if that’s the right tune that keeps bussing in your head.
I’m a disabled veteran. Music that I hunt is pieces that do more for me than most any pain killers. I listen to music that will motivate me to keep the faith and to keep plugging along. And I’m sure this is true of many people. If you will check some of these radio stations you’ll find that there are many stations that have there music on large hard drives and they are sharing it with the listeners who have tuned in, or logged in or whatever….
Anyway, most of us who download music are not stealing anything. We download the music so we can use the information about the song so we can then hunt it down for purchase. Also, there are many online services like Rhapsody that anyone can pay a monthly fee, plus 99¢ per track.
