- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Making fun of techno on the internet is like telling Irish people drinking is for *****, probably not a good idea.
- antonio97b, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23I stopped reading Rolling Stone magazine when one of its articles called Justin Timberlake an "edgy performer".
Braces for the digg down. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22I can't wait for this album.
The single is great: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yp42roinQSs - znutz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Here is a 192kbps CD rip of the new single "Icky Thump"

Don't ask how I got it ;-) - robshoy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14The White Stripes are my favorite band, and I have to say this to all their haters: I get you. I don't blame you. The White Stripes' music is a very acquired taste. It's not something you can just pick up. And yet, their fanbase is gigantic, so obviously they have talent. Jack White is one of the greatest guitarists of our time. Is he a Hendrix? Hell no. But he sure as hell knows how to write a good riff and play it to boot. Meg is a very controversial drummer, no one can deny that. Her simplicity is reminiscent of Ringo Starr, but modern culture demands fast and wild drum beats, that Meg obviously isn't a fan of. Can she drum fast? Probably. But that wouldn't fit with the music. She's not a BAD drummer, she's just unconventional. And our culture of course is famous for not supporting the unconventianal. On the subject of this new album, I haven't heard all of it, but Icky Thump is amazing. It's again extremely different, and features some of the best riffs in Jack's carreer. 5/5 for the title track. Can't wait for the album. Cheers!
- CarpeFishem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Overall, it's been a very good year for music. The new albums by Andrew Bird, Deerhoof, Of Montreal, The Shins, The Arcade Fire, Menomena, and Modest Mouse have all been good if not great (Modest Mouse is the weakest, probably), and there's new stuff coming from Rufus Wainwright, The National, White Stripes, Bjork, and Spoon that all sounds rather good so far. Not bad at all.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+23Techno DOES suck.
Jack White will rock you like a proverbial hurricane, and if he does not, then I question your testicular fortitude.
I'm also an Irish *****, and I'm drinking. - MusicalFeedback, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I stopped reading after the top 100 greatest guitarists to ever live came out.
12 Kurt Cobain of Nirvana: Don't get me wrong, Kurt is a lot better then he shows in Nirvana, but #12 to ever live?
And anybody notice the lack of Dave Mustane? Just 2 of many fatal flaws on the list.
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5937559/the_100_greatest_guitarists_of_all_time - redmond007, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10meg white = hot *****
- andydickme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Could have been the 2004 Grammys. It's on YouTube. Just goes to show that the White Stripes are one of the very few bands that can be called "genius" or "amazing." One of the few bands that still make original rock instead of bowing down to whatever's popular at the moment. Can't wait for Icky Thump!!!
- CatalystDM, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11No, actually techno is not electronic music. It is a genre of electronic music, just like Trance, House, and Jungle are. It originated in Detroit. It's not an all-encompassing term, as the mainstream music scene has made it out to be.
This site explains things pretty well:
http://www.di.fm/edmguide/edmguide.html - toothpot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5All Hail!
- black|math, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah Kurt was a good performer and great songwriter, but guitar virtuoso he wasn't.
And a few people were awfully upset that Jack White is 17. But I think for a list that has Hendrix, BB King and SRV in the top 10, I think he fits in. - AUGTRON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What ever happened to the Raconteurs?
- meamog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The Raconteurs are working on a new album, aiming for a 2008 release.
- hablo4u, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I've decided not to like you.
- Tokkii, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Large fanbase does not mean you have talent. Please.
- kaelyiesta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Well you can review(judge) music via populism arguments but I think thats all ***** because it doesn't consider exposure and other factors. Lately I've been considering a modified form of that view by filtering out the majority that listen to it due to peer influence, exposure(via radio, friends etc), and all the other things that give some music an edge over others in terms of numbers of people that listen to it. The way I'd quantify the quality of a song or musician is by the number of long term listeners. This effectively eliminates people who listen to it because its what their friends listen to, its the newest thing puked out by the record labels and so on. The evaluation is still flawed because some music is just never heard by enough people to have many long time listeners (jazz and other arguably decent forms of music for example) but it does manage to cut down the vast number of ***** that the latest generation of teeny boppers buy because its played on mtv or whatever. So, if you want to get a very rough idea of how good some particular music is, wait about 30 years after its been made and see how many people listen to it still. Not a correct measure, but its infinitely better than judging music based on whether its in the top 40 or not.
- chickentonight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4snudds is a troll. Add him to your block list. Goodbye snudds.
- CarpeFishem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Overall, it's good, but it doesn't really compare to the others. They should have trimmed a few songs to be released as b-sides; the album goes on too long, and it doesn't have a very strong structure or pacing.
- greeseless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Eddie Van Halen #70?
That's just mean. - Dr.Gonzo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Actually, I believe the simplicity of drums adds to their sound.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Was that the pitchfork review of the Stripes album?
- sensibledriver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Writing about music is like dancing about architecture."
- Stephiems, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I'm afraid I'm going to have to call you on this one. Meg is a bad drummer. Just like Ringo was a bad drummer and the guy from U2 is a bad drummer, and on and on and on. Does she do her job? Well that's up to you to decide...maybe they don't have to be good sometimes. Being good isn't about being fast, its about having feel. Most of the time with drumming its what you don't play that's important. You compare her to drummers of today....well there aren't a lot of good drummers of today, there are a handful. Most people wouldn't even know the names of some of the most amazing drummers of today. I would almost bet that she couldn't sit with a band where she didn't know the songs. Good drummers can feel a song and at least keep the beat in almost any song. They may not play the drum parts exactly how the original drummer did, but it will work.
I'll give the new album a listen, but just because something is unconventional, doesn't immediately make it good. I always think its funny when people go, "Yeah, but at least its different from all the other crap today." Yeah, great, but it doesn't make it good just based on that. Like I said, I haven't heard the new album, and I will give it a listen, I always give bands a chance...but stuff in the past hasn't done it for me. Its hard to make anything rock when you have a guitar player, and nothing else. Basically no drums and no bass. Some of the songs are catchy, but its not rock music. All the greats had great musicians backing them up in the band.
Rock music today just doesn't cut it....the guitar sound alone of most guitarist is enough to make you want to scream. - Stephiems, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't know why you are being dugg down, you speak the truth. People on here who love this band would say the same thing about the bands they hate that have huge fan bases. Us human beings fall for advertising, that is the truth. Finding someone who actually makes decisions based solely on their own mind is very hard to find. I like songs I know I shouldn't just because I've heard them over and over.
Some of the most talented musicians in the world today are not on popular radio.
If you think you are cool just for listening to the band you think is the 'alternate', they are the alternate because the record companies not only want to make money for the popular bands....but for the other group of people who want to think they are listening to the non-popular bands. - CarpeFishem, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6We're sorry, Mr. Marsh-- the answer is "naggers."
- robharper, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Ok, surely someone is thinking the same thing...
WHEN CAN I GET THE TORRENT!? - fhsbando, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I never thought I would be a fan of band like the White Stripes. Glad I've had an open mind and open ears. Can't wait until June.
- byebry, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I've never been a White Stripes fan, but this song is amazing. If the rest of the album is anything like it...I'll be sure to pick it up.
- dugdal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Icky Thump???
Anyone remember "The Goodies" the British comdey show with Greame Garden, Bill Oddie, and Tim Brooke Taylor?
Im sure they had an episode where the baddie 's name was Eckky (thats how i heard it )Thump who would go around robbing folks by hitting them on their heads with a Black Pudding? - robshoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can't wait for the torrent, as bad as that sounds. I really want to hear the album NOW. This is an album I want to legally own though, so I'd probably still buy the album.
- meamog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I happen to like the feel of Meg's drumming. And I'd argue till the sundown that Ringo was anything less than a human metronome, and i mean that in the best possible way. Experimental pop music generally needs some anchor, drums are a pretty good place to start.
- tylerfulltilt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would just like to remind everyone that rolling stone gave "Chocolate starfish and the hotdog flavored water" 3 and 1/2 out of 5 stars.
Most likely, what's going on here is that Jack white's label is banking on selling a lot of copies of to make up for the losses they've incurred on other acts that didn't sell well. In which case they probably bought a good review from rolling stone.
case in point, THEY GAVE "CHOCOLATE STARFISH AND THE HOTDOG FLAVORED WATER" THREE STARS! - DJCult, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh-my-god, longest wrong thread post EVER.
- CarpeFishem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Also missing: Phil Keaggy, whom Jimi Hendrix said was the greatest guitarist alive when he was asked what it felt like to be the greatest guitarist alive.
At least they let John Fahey on the list. - Stephiems, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3That's fine if you like it....but it doesn't make it good. Ringo was replaced in some recorded songs because he couldn't play them the way they wanted the recordings to sound. You may think he was a metronome...but there are plenty of good drummers who keep good rhythm...in fact, you aren't a good drummer unless you can. So maybe he's not bad....but he isn't good either. Keeping a beat is the first thing you learn. His son is ten times the drummer he is.
- toothpot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Of course you'd say that.
- trip9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They are recording as we speak. Jack White must be a very busy man. Also on The Hives website it said that they went and recorded "footsteps" for The Raconteurs. Whether they meant literal footsteps or if 'footsteps' is the name of a song is yet to be determined. Either way, there's some top notch talent at work.
- superbonbon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm kind of lame but I actually try to purchase albums from artists I really like. White Stripes are one of the few bands I have purchased every album instead of downloaded.
- coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's what I immediately thought of too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kung_Fu_Kapers
Ecky thump is much more that 'hitting people on the head' - it's a whole martial art, requiring many years of dedicated study to become a "Grand Master of Ecky Thump". What wouldn't I give for a 6-foot flat cap...
Astoundingly, it says this episode caused one of the only recorded deaths by laughing. It was extremely funny. - myshoeshurt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not a review.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah, the KISS method applies to the Stripes. She's pretty heavy on the bass, though.
- slugicide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it's ironic that all this debate is about Meg's drumming on a song called "Icky Thump." The Stripes wouldn't be the Stripes without that 'thump'.
- Rammsteined, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No Tommy Emmanuel either. :/
- GirSaysDoom13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i itunesed the new single, and liked it, but didn't LOVE it. it was pretty electronic sounding, and I prefer jack's blues more, but there's supposed to be lots of that on the full album, too,, so i can't complain. just gotta wait until.. june? or it it july?
- slugicide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And Adam Clayton's bass playing was too simple, yet somehow it wasn't until he began playing that way that U2 broke. When it comes to rhythm, it seems simple is not always bad.
- TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Electronic is probably the most diverse type of music. There are more truly talented electronic artists and composers than there are of any other type of music.
John Cage, Philip Glass, Terry Riley - Don't forget these people are all Electronic (Mostly Musique Concrete) / Minimalist composers and they are the best of our time. - CatalystDM, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2How can you say Modest Mouse is the weakest out of those? I thought they put out a fantastic album.
- superbonbon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1and talent doesn't always = success. So what?
in the end, the record companies don't care why you like what they're peddling, just that you like it enough to buy it. -
