- adam.skinner, on 03/05/2008, -6/+220The creative commons license he's put the entire project under appears to allow users to create a torrent of the whole album (I-IV, not just I) and distribute it.
- canewediggit, on 03/05/2008, -8/+177$750k - production/studio/equipment/bandwidth costs - time spent (and trent's time is valuable since he can make plenty of money charging for production) is < $750k. i think this is all well and good, but i still wonder if this ever works for an unknown. as trent stated, the saul project didn't work out too well, and saul at least had some minimal name recognition in the underground hip-hop circles. could this model ever work for bands trying to make a name?
- sunroom, on 03/05/2008, -0/+138This is the problem with unknowns replicating this model. The fact is, NiN and Radiohead were both made popular by the corporate music machine. Now that they don't need that machine for marketing and creating awareness anymore, they can do whatever they want and existing fans will be attentive and receptive. If an unknown band did this (and some are trying, including my band), they wouldn't acheive similar effects because it only really works well when the name recognition is already there.
- jpt62089, on 03/05/2008, -1/+133RIAA will take this as "Oh people would rather pay now? Lets raise the prices!"
- underthewether, on 03/05/2008, -2/+123this is definitely a step in the right direction. artists need to follow this lead. provide a way to listen to the album without having to pay (stream it from a website) and then you can buy what songs you like.
- sgxyay, on 03/05/2008, -0/+103This is basically how I market my tunes and sell my albums. I have about 25 minutes of my latest album available for free download, I have streaming previews, I sell the download album in high bitrate vbr mp3 and flac for $5, and the disc order for $15 (disc orders get you the download also). Orders have been split about 50/50 between digital and CD...so CDs are still important.
I didn't make $750,000 in three days...surprise! More like $250. But hey, this is a hobby.
Last time I commented and referred to my music people said "I would have taken a listen if he posted a link," so please forgive the spam. My new album is at www.sgxmusic.com/hotga.htm - DeadFrost, on 03/05/2008, -4/+98Bow down before the one you serve!
- xXShadowstormXx, on 03/05/2008, -2/+87What the article is missing concerning the Saul Williams experiment is that there was no streamable way to listen to the album (Niggy Tardust). With this, there is.
Also, this album is totally kick ass. I'm glad I'm able to support Trent and, at least, the attempt in a new direction in music. - christopherRB, on 03/05/2008, -0/+65I will pay the Artists but I won't pay the RIAA
- BlackJackJester, on 03/05/2008, -3/+63Dude...its only $5...for 36 songs...that goes 100% to the artist. Jesus.
- booticon, on 03/05/2008, -0/+47From http://ghosts.nin.com/main/faq:
Ghosts I-IV is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike license. - Impius, on 03/05/2008, -7/+50yes, lets torrent this and not show our support for someone trying to actually do SOMETHING to help the industry and not totally screw the consumer... lovely way to be a complete duche.
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -1/+43New! Justin Timberlake - 2hot2mv, only $300!
- endlessoul, on 03/05/2008, -0/+40I wouldn't consider this spam. This is a relevant issue for you and has everything to do with the premise of the article.
Best of luck in your musical endeavors. - lostarchitect, on 03/05/2008, -0/+37hey sunroom, what's your band's website? i'm always up for listening to something new.
- inactive, on 03/05/2008, -0/+35750K plus my 10 bucks...
I'm wondering the total in a few weeks, I hope Trent releases numbers - A14049752, on 03/05/2008, -1/+34I'm more curious to see the actual sales numbers, total. We only know the $750k number because of the limited number of the deluxe set, but most people didn't fork over $300 for this.
- sgxyay, on 03/05/2008, -0/+32Wow thanks guys. I just got three sales since I posted this. Very much appreciated. I hope everyone enjoys the music.
- Synthesize, on 03/05/2008, -1/+32Ghosts I-IV is brilliant. $75 well spent on the deluxe edition.
- matthewdestroys, on 03/05/2008, -1/+31bands typically don't really see the money coming in from record sales. it's all about touring and selling merch. so in the long run this could work for all musicians... especially with all the networking capabilities we have now.
- Mardala, on 03/05/2008, -1/+29Cool ... next lets cut out the middle person in ticketing and see how that goes. Ticketmaster is as bad as the RIAA.
- h8machine, on 03/05/2008, -1/+27I have not purchased an album, physical CD or digital, in almost 10 years.
I purchased the $5 version to support Trent and his model. I'm not even that big of a fan of NiN. - counterplex, on 03/05/2008, -0/+26Wow! That is gutsy!
- synep, on 03/05/2008, -4/+29Ok, digital distribution works for big name bands that have been around for a long time. Where does this leave the up-and-comers?
- Mejogid, on 03/05/2008, -0/+24Thanks, I'd assumed the lack of a free download for II-IV meant they were licensed differently. It's not really the type of music I'd normally fork over cash for, but based on that gesture I think I will.
- jdpalite, on 03/05/2008, -2/+25I agree with you but you misspelled "douche"...
- mrjit, on 03/05/2008, -0/+23I wish more musical "artists" saw music production and distribution as a HOBBY or a career that can sustain them like other careers, and an ART, and not a way to secure a home in The Hills next to Lohan. Call me a communist/socialist. Good luck with your album, I'll listen to it in a bit.
- kingmanic, on 03/05/2008, -0/+23I paid $5, and then got it from the pirate bay. I may pay 10 for the two CD set later. The guy is open minded and an ethical businessman. I go out of my way to reward ethical businessman.
- ybnormalman, on 03/05/2008, -2/+25How is that a half truth (let alone a flat out lie)? He's offering a decent portion of the music on the album for free, and he's already sold out of the $300 version of the album. $300 x 2,500 units = $750,000, even though 1/4 of the album is available for free.
Don't bother commenting if your only input is to nit pick a title because it summarizes the facts - that's what titles are supposed to do. - mardraum, on 03/05/2008, -1/+24you're going to get what you deserve!
- kurtwinter, on 03/05/2008, -1/+21This does work. Capitalism works. Offering your customers something tangible in addition to something made out of bits works. Radiohead and Reznor are redefining the music industry. Obligatory ***** the RIAA.
- StuartGibson, on 06/14/2009, -0/+20I'm just scared my wife will find out how much I spent on the Ultra Deluxe :(
- SlipStream89, on 03/05/2008, -4/+24Reznor '08??
- DDoSAttack, on 03/05/2008, -0/+20I think you forgot to factor in that he has his own studio and does most of all of his own production. That said I believe that after the first week he is sitting quite nicely in the profit dept ;)
- sunroom, on 03/06/2008, -0/+20http://www.aviaryghost.com
For 2 free mp3s, you can download this torrent: http://www.mininova.org/tor/1215839
Thanks for the interest, everyone! - jhendrickson, on 03/05/2008, -0/+19I don't particularly care for the latest NIN offering yet (maybe in time), but I bought it anyway because I think this method of distribution needs to be promoted.
- dizturbd2, on 03/05/2008, -1/+20Great Artist, even better marketeer.
- greeniemeani, on 03/05/2008, -4/+22***** THE RIAA!
- willfe, on 03/05/2008, -2/+20Hear, hear! This is an appropriate price point for this amount of music. Torrent the music if you must, but throw the guy a friggin' $5 bone, will 'ya? It's not that much out of anyone's pocket.
- atomicwedgie, on 03/05/2008, -0/+17I am not a NIN fan but I don't have to be to see Trent is one smart MoFo.
- dudetaz2003, on 03/05/2008, -0/+17Another 20 your way.
- h8machine, on 03/05/2008, -0/+16Nevermind RTFA... you didn't even read the by-line!
"sold out his 2,500 deluxe editions at $300 a pop"
You can still download 9 tracks of the album for free, or pay $5 for all 30+ tracks. - mourne, on 03/05/2008, -1/+17That and it's seriously difficult for bands like mine to create 4 CDs worth of music and sell it for $5 anyway. I'm guessing Trent owns his own studio that he did all of this in to.
Also, Ghosts is ***** badass. and it's NIN. - TheNik, on 03/05/2008, -0/+16It didn't say $750k profit, it said he made that much off of the $300 super-deluxe editions. I'm sure he made plenty more from the $75, the $10, and the $5.
He also didn't pay a producer and I doubt he bought more equipment or built a new studio. He's good for it. - wafflesomd, on 03/05/2008, -0/+16I just purchased it encoded in FLAC. Hope the funds help you.
- techlyc, on 03/05/2008, -0/+15"I would rather pay for free music, then music that costs money." - RIAA's head a-splode
- A14049752, on 03/05/2008, -1/+16Cool....so if my math is correct... (300 x 2500) + (Many More x 5) = No new information.
- jesuswuzanalien, on 03/06/2008, -1/+15That kind of ***** is crucial on digg.
- djdementia, on 03/05/2008, -1/+15Did you even look at the official web page http://ghosts.nin.com/main/home ? The very first sentence of it says: "Nine Inch Nails presents Ghosts I - IV, a brand new 36 track instrumental collection available right now. Almost two hours of new music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I - IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain." I can has reading lesson?
