- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+1942 years old? 15 years since he died?
I feel so damn old right now. - satanherself, on 02/21/2009, -17/+35He died a selfish death by his own hand. His daughter deserved to know him.
- FlyingPhotog, on 02/21/2009, -2/+16You stop having birthdays when you die.
- jmantra, on 02/21/2009, -2/+16I don't know whether or not to digg this for Kurt Cobain or bury it for Huffingtonpost
- MoeWasHere, on 02/21/2009, -1/+15RIP Kurt Cobain.
Nirvana is still one of the most played bands on modern rock radio. And their music still sounds a LOT better than a lot of the crap that comes out these days.
Great music, great band, great talent. Alas, not everything lasts forever. - supercandy, on 02/21/2009, -6/+17great talent.
RIP - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+10The guy's music connected with the youth of every generation from the early 90's, maybe not you in particular.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -2/+11He wasn't the greatest guitar player or singer either. But he was an awesome song writer.
He was a victim of severe depression and his suicide is sad, but you can't deny that he earned his place in history and changed music. - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -1/+9Yeah that seems to be quite an unrefutable pattern you've got there.
- sockpuppets, on 02/21/2009, -4/+11Nevermind.
- polexia, on 02/21/2009, -3/+10Honestly what is with all the hate comments? I can understand why someone might view him as overrated but this is ridiculas.
- monkeyvoodoo, on 02/21/2009, -1/+7I can't agree with smotpoker more. As someone who suffers from fairly severe depression, having seen how people who haven't experienced it view it, his statement is spot-on. Don't presume to understand how someone experiencing this feels. It's true that, for an individual not experiencing depression, their behavior is inexcusable and cowardly. But the mind of someone who really, actually suffers from depression, doesn't view the world in the same way. It's not a matter of opinion or something that can be questioned, it's a matter of someone experiencing life and seeing the world in a way that is similar to, but unquestionably different from you.
- RunDiggMC, on 02/20/2009, -5/+11"With eyes so dilated, I've become your pupil. You've taught me everything without a poison apple. The water is so yellow, I'm a healthy student. Indebted and so grateful."
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -0/+690's Alternative rock was original, everyone didn't sound the same except a few of the grunge bands. Than around 1998, when the rock/rap and angry guy rock bands took the show, it started sucking. Sometime after that we had Swing music leading for about a month. Than when i thought it couldn't get any worse, the EMO ***** started whining all over the radio. Than they have the nerve to label some of the leftover 90's Alternative bands EMO.
By the way alot of the 90's bands didn't fade away. They are still around. Radio stations just don't play them. - Sefus, on 02/21/2009, -0/+6Oh! Has it been 15 years?
RIP Curt. You are missed. - polexia, on 02/21/2009, -1/+7Chris Cornell is dead to me now though
- smotpoker, on 02/21/2009, -0/+5@macarbone
Oh noez! Not a derogatory overused misapplied label! Those *never* existed in the '90s, your logic is completely unassailable. Labeled by poseur conformist douchebags == worthless/inferior. Gotcha.
@b3owulf
Just because it took a long time for your preschool drop-out ass to read doesn't mean it took long to write. Maybe once you pass 3rd grade english you'll see what I'm sayin'. - ProfessorLX, on 02/21/2009, -2/+7DAMN YOU COURTNEY LOVE, you murdering BITCH!!!
- Brasky, on 02/21/2009, -3/+8Foo Fighters => Obviously there was more to Nirvana than ***** Kurt Cobain.
- slugicide, on 02/21/2009, -0/+4"Not to Kurt. All he wanted was to be a normal guy who wasn't so dissatisfied with the world."
This would have made his life and death more romantic if it were true, but it isn't. He wanted to be a rock star. He said it many times to many people. That the price of stardom was so high for him is sad, for he and his family, but he did seek it. - MadHarvey, on 02/21/2009, -1/+5It has taken awhile for us to realize this, but 300 year old royalty-patronized music has far less artistic value in our modern society than a kid in a garage with a pawnshop guitar.
*****, my computer can make a 6 part Fugue that would make Bach look like a ***** pussy, you want a copy?
It'll be some nice background music while your mediocre dentist connects with you in a way you can't put into words, changes your perceptions of life and society, and inspires you to do the same for someone else.
For best results, ask for the nitrous oxide. - smotpoker, on 02/21/2009, -6/+10I suspect that neither of you should presume to know the motives or circumstances surrounding his death and therefore aren't qualified to pass judgment on his character at any level. Hows about getting a life and doing something positive to contribute to society rather than attack those who cannot defend themselves over actions that do not directly affect you? Why condemn he who was suffering for doing what he felt had to be done to end that suffering?
Perhaps if he was such a selfish coward he decided to do what he did to spare his child the pain of having such a selfish coward as a father. Would that make his actions any more justified in your eyes? Having a kid doesn't instantly change everyone and it is stupid to condemn everyone who has a kid and doesn't act exactly as you would in their situation. I fully agree that it is a shame she could not know him however I dispute the assumption that his action was petty/selfish.
I'm pretty certain that taking your own life is an idea that no one considering it takes lightly (no matter how selfish they are) and to just about any mind just about any action is justifiable under some circumstance(s) (no matter how many kids they have). - inkswamp, on 02/22/2009, -0/+3Why is there always someone who has to use this to get on that tired, old soapbox and lecture everyone else? I bet you're one of those guys who sits around at parties wanting to talk politics. Such a hoot.
Either way, even a casual knowledge of Cobain's life and career shows that he had some serious mental problems that in retrospect look obvious but that everyone underestimated at the time and assumed was part of his artistic temperament. Why don't we all back off the self-righteousness and just admit that it was a loss for everyone, especially his daughter. The real tragedy is that she's probably better off without him in her life. There's no happy side to that and nobody is to blame. Your little grandstanding lectures about life and death doesn't change that. - richmondphotog, on 02/21/2009, -3/+6Foo Fighters suck. Especially, that "my hero" song.
- STKD, on 02/21/2009, -6/+9The irony that Kurt would absolutely hate the way people rave about him and still post junk like this? Not lost on me.
Kurt is dead. Get the ***** over it. - brodieman, on 02/21/2009, -5/+8I believe you stop celebrating birthdays after you blow your head off.
- aenima987, on 02/21/2009, -0/+3I'd say Scott Weiland is much more likely to kick it soon. (Yes I know I just compared him with far more talented musicians).
- DuMbGuM, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2While Foo Fighers arent bad, they're exremely mainstream, and certainly not comparable to Nirvana.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -6/+8Musical lyrics today probably would have more substance to them had he lived.
He was great when he lived, he would be even more famous today had he lived. - inactive, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3Ever since that tragedy with Timbaland.
To think, I've been to a Soundgarden and two Audioslave concerts... that guy changed alot. - inkswamp, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2No, he would have hated people who presume to lecture everyone else about what they should or shouldn't do or think their observation of some apparent irony was too clever not to mention.
Sound familiar? - leif77, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2Dave Grohl is a much more personable individual... it's not surprising that his songs are more pop influenced.
- inactive, on 02/21/2009, -4/+6Smells Like Cobain's Spirit.
- tomarocco, on 02/21/2009, -2/+4Yeah, you really can't argue that a selfish, cowardly drug addict with incredibly bad taste in women can earn a place in history.
- anaesthetica, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3There has got to be a more worthy tribute to Kurt Cobain on some other site (perhaps one that actually has something to do with music) than some drivel on HuffPo.
It's offensive that Huffington Post made it to Digg's front page on this topic before an alternate article. - tomarocco, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3Long Live Mudhoney
- jmill987, on 02/22/2009, -0/+2He was a good songwriter and everything, but "rock legend"? Come on.
- Bilbobaggins, on 02/21/2009, -0/+2Well it's a pretty ***** article but I do agree on some of his points. RIP Cobain.
- stonebear, on 02/21/2009, -1/+3Loved himself better than us.
- inkswamp, on 02/22/2009, -1/+2You're so right because nobody knew who he was when he was alive.
/s - Makave22, on 02/21/2009, -1/+2heel yeah
- richmondphotog, on 02/21/2009, -1/+2Oh, it started sucking way before 1998.
- greenriver572, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1i've read every book there is about kurt cobain and nirvana, i don't ever think crack came into the picture.
- technetix, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1Amazing talent. He will always be missed by the true fans. But times move on, and thankfully Grohl has taken the throne.
- Kannebas, on 02/28/2009, -0/+1Last time I checked, Soundgarden, The Melvins, Soul Asylum, Screaming Trees, Green River, Public Enemy, NIN, Pixies, Mudhoney, Black Flag, Killing Joke, and R.E.M all put out records before Nirvana did. Started a movement? More like rode the wave...
- leif77, on 02/22/2009, -0/+1He started a movement. He was writing about things that people didn't even want to acknowledge... let alone talk about... and certainly not hear on the radio. He connected with the new crop of kids that were just growing up and gave them something to relate to.
- m00n1, on 02/21/2009, -3/+4I know many consider this sacrilege, but I always thought Nirvana were over rated. Good? For sure. Very good? Yeah probably. But I've never understood this idolisation. Yes, I've heard Nevermind and some others. Many greater artists around IMHO.
- dakotaboo, on 02/27/2009, -0/+0Chris Cornell ... nah, surely not. I've not seen this guy on TV for a while but wasn't he always in rude health?
- illmatictouch, on 02/21/2009, -1/+1the man was an amazing song write...RIP Kurt
- Chewie67, on 02/21/2009, -2/+2Based on what I saw on TV -- drug addicted dirt-bag -- maybe his daughter is better off without his influence.
